Aside from one random crash, it worked fine as far as I can tell. I didn't try any mods.
Game crashed to desktop once and only once in my entire playthrough. Hard to tell if it was Proton-related.
Mouse speed seems oddly dependent on frame rate or something, but hard to tell if this is a Linux/Proton thing or not.
Works perfectly.
Another user here said they couldn't find a fullscreen option, but it works fine for me. Pressing Alt+Enter should toggle fullscreen mode.
The game's "installer" (a fake in-game one that exists for purposes of immersion) wobbled constantly on the screen. I was unsure if it was supposed to do this, but I checked a YouTube video and it didn't happen there. It was still not too difficult to get through this sequence, and then the wobbling stopped.
Game crashed once (and only once) when I tried deleting a save file. Deleting a save file usually produced no ill effects. This crash is unrelated to system crashes I experienced, and it happened after I installed the BIOS update.
Had some system crashes while playing this, but they went away after I installed a BIOS update, so I assume the BIOS was the problem.
Flawless as far as I can tell, but I haven't yet made it to the late game in Discover the World.
Alt-tab usually works on the main menu but not in-game, in my experience.
Other people here have noted that the Steam cloud didn't copy their save, but this game doesn't use Steam cloud. If you want your save to be copied, you have to use the developer's own cloud feature. I have no idea whether that works or not because I haven't tried using it to copy a save to another machine or OS.
No music.
Crackling during FMVs, no music during the game.
Not TOO bad, but crashy enough to be annoying.
Often crashed when going to new area, but autosaves were sufficient for it not to be too bothersome. There was one puzzle where the game froze and I had to alt+F4 out, but the scene resumed where I left off when I relaunched the game.
The opening video for Dynasty Mode has a strange TV-style test pattern in the middle of the screen, obscuring much of the view. It only happens in these scenes, as far as I've seen, and has no impact on gameplay.
If I tried alt-tabbing out, it wouldn't let me out, and also the game would freeze. I had to use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a shell and kill the MFL.exe process.
I've never tried this game on Windows, but as far as I can tell, it runs perfectly with Proton.
Lack of alt-tab was really irritating early in the game because of the lack of save points. But once you reach the first save point, save points become plentiful and this is no longer a problem.
Crashes too often for me. Your mileage may vary.
I played through the first two games of the trilogy on Windows without any issues I can recall. Now I'm playing the third on Linux and it's nearly impossible to make it through a whole Investigation segment in one go without a random crash. It's happened three times now, though in a different segment each time.
FMVs do not play correctly; they have wrong dimensions and crazy colors. It probably has to do with my old graphics card.
There's a rare slowdown when playing some animations. It doesn't affect gameplay from what I could tell.
Other people have mentioned problems with the numpad, but it works fine for me.
Changing the config file wasn't necessary to run the game, but it was the only way I could change the resolution.
Game crashed when I alt-tabbed out. Luckily you can save the game before you try it.
The only thing that really stood out was the game often froze for several seconds at the end of a dance. It was benign, though. I think the game always did stutter there even on Windows, but I don't remember it doing it for that long.
Game crashes on alt-tab and on changing the resolution. The optional launcher would also crash when trying to change settings, but I don't think the launcher really adds anything anyway. No other crashes that I can recall.
You'll probably want to set the resolution to a 4:3 resolution like 1024x768. The game wasn't designed to handle 16:9 displays.
I couldn't get the GOG version to work, even with Proton Experimental, so I bought the Steam version and it works fine with Experimental. (Proton 9.0.1 was just released, but it still doesn't run this game properly.)
The scrolling ticker text is a bit more jittery than I remember it, but it's been so long since I've played the game that I'm not sure it's a Proton issue.
I can alt-tab out, but it will still show the game in a large, unmovable window until I switch back in.
My previous review was a bit premature since I hadn't yet run into the alt-tab issue, but the rest of it still stands.
PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
You may or may not be able to play this game out of the box. I've seen reports that the game works with Proton, but it didn't launch for me. It took me many hours of troubleshooting to determine that I needed to set launch options to PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
. Once I did that, the game launched, and as far as I can tell, it works fine.
Mostly works fine, aside from freezing once on quit.
It once froze when I had to quit. ctrl+alt+f1 and killing the process was enough to fix it. Since I was quitting anyway, it wasn't a big deal.
After having played it without issue for a few hours, I tried to start up the game again and it wouldn't launch, giving an error message. I rebooted my computer and the game started working again, and the bug did not resurface.
The game itself has quite a few bugs, but they don't seem to be related to Proton.
Works perfectly as far as I can tell.
I don't have any of the DLC, but I've finished the main game.
Alt-tab didn't work, but at least it didn't make me go to the console to kill the game.
Just a white screen.
Music plays, custom cursor is visible, but I only saw a white screen. The game exited when I alt-tabbed out.
The sound effects when running the simulated device are not always timed perfectly, but this is likely an issue on Windows as well and doesn't affect enjoyment of the game.
Good, but not perfect.
Alt-tabbing out can cause the game to effectively crash. Save your game before you alt-tab out!
Alt-tabbing out can crash the game. It might also not close properly when you try to quit and need to be closed with System Monitor or a similar tool. Otherwise stable.
Multiplayer is unavailable, but I didn't want to use it anyway.
It seems to work fine, but only after I unplugged my gamepad.
Having a controller plugged in causes mouse and keyboard not to work properly. Didn't try actually playing with the controller since I didn't want to.
No music except post-game.
In all honesty, the game's not that fun anyway.
I usually use Proton 6, but this game ran too slow on it. I'm not sure whether I've tried 7.
Alt-tab sometimes worked, sometimes required me to go to a console and kill it.
Sometimes game would not launch. I would have to kill it and try again. One time I even had to reboot. I still made it through the whole game, though. Aside from that and the alt-tab issue, the game was stable.
Alt-tab usually works fine, but a few times the game didn't come back up and I had to alt-tab back out and back in. After that, though, it works.
The mouse cursor doesn't disappear even when I'm not playing with the mouse, but I don't know whether or not this is normal behavior for this game.
Game is not playable to the end, though you still get to answer one question before the game crashes.
Categories don't appear after the first question, forcing you to choose between three blank categories. Then, whichever you pick, the game freezes after the "Question 2" animation, when the host reads the category name. I have to alt-F4 out and then kill the YDKJ6.exe process.
I tried Proton 6.3-8, 7.0-3, and Experimental. All behave exactly the same.
