exec default_controller.cfg
You could use a community controller layout, but I'd recommend just putting exec default_controller.cfg on launch parameters and native controller support will activate. Then, change the multiplayer exe name to the single player exe name, launch again to activate multiplayer controller support and then return the names to what they were (the exes) and you are golden.
At first it didn't launch. It was isntalled on my SD. Just returned me to the game page with the green play button. Then I tried different Protons from steam until I got to Proton 7.0.6 or 7.0.2 and then it got stuck to starting and didn't kick me out. I waited and then forcibly quit. I uninstalled, installed on the main internal SD and it worked with default steam proton. Then I moved the game to the SD and it worked. Super weird.
Slowdowns in this game doesn't make sense on a Steam deck.
If you are lucky, it will start on the steam deck. If not, try uninstalling from SD installing again, try Proton 7.0.2 or 7.0.6 and then back to default.
At first, the game refused to launch at all. When I tried to launch from "Gaming Mode" it showed "Updating executable" and then just crashed. Tried to launch the game from Desktop Mode, opens dialog box with title "Duke Nukem Forever -Steam" and a description "Completing Installation ..." with the three Dots alternating from one to three (it is a typical grey Steam dialog / Pop Up, it's not from the game). Then showed another tittled "Steam - Error" Description was: "steam servers are too busy to handle your request (error 2)".
I do not know what is exactly what I did to solve it, but the steps I followed were:
- Switch to: 5.0 try to launch - Fail
- Add parameters PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% - Fail
- Changed to 6.3-8 - Fail
- Add parameters PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% - Success
- Removed version change + maintain parameters - Success
- Removed version change + removed parameters - Success
Seems like you have to run the game with parameters once then play normally.
Movies Turned green sometimes.
Some extra lag.
Seems like you have to run the game with some parameters once for it to finish installing and then remove the parameters on the next launch.
At first the game didn't recognize my inputs out of the box. Did some things but not sure what finally fixed it:
- Changed resolution to 1200 X 800 - Fail
- Changed to Proton GE 7.53 - Success
- Changed back to Steam Default - Success
Hope this helps anybody.
After changing resolution everything good.
Missing Music fixed by installing directmusic (which is a package), but it forces you to do it file by file.
Veeeery tiny sometimes
Had to fix it myself.
Typical crash on Jungle level - Drug Compound
Music in this game is VITAL. Without tinkering this game loses the charm of the AMAZING Jesper Kyd Soundtrack.
Switched Thermal Power Limit to 3
Just Change the Proton Version to Older 7.0.6
I don't Know if it was an update, but as of january 4th 2024 works out of the box, audio and everything. No tinkering.
Terms and Conditions were minuscule.

Single player is good, just be sure to change the resolution to the appropiate one native of the Deck. If you have friends, US server is up.
Lowered Graphics, the deck gets too hot for this game.
This game is basically dead online, but I was able to create a server and play on my own.
Deleted Old Broken Physyx files and installed correct ones with protontricks
Only 4 watt power
Audio in videos is missing.
