Mouse didn't work on default Proton version.
Played for 30 minutes, game is working OOTB like on Windows PC.

for widescreen resolution find Serious Sam The First Encounter/Scripts open the PersistentSymbols.ini and find these lines and modify x and y for your resolution ex 2560 x 1440.
persistent extern INDEX sam_iScreenSizeI=(INDEX)XXX; persistent extern INDEX sam_iScreenSizeJ=(INDEX)YYY;
and find this line to change fov by removing XX with your desired fov.
persistent extern user FLOAT plr_fFOV=(FLOAT)XX;
For correct mouse input, turn Sharp Turning ON, smoothing OFF, "mouse acceleration" ON (this is not variable acceleration as in other games).

В это можно играть.
ALT Linux LXDE - Работает с параметрами по умолчанию ALT Linux GNOME - есть замедления

The textures were messed up, to fix this I ran these command in the game console:
/gap_iDepthBits=24 /ApplyVideoMode()
It only runs on OpenGL.
Also the mouse sensitivity was a little to high for me so I also ran this command:
/inp_fMouseSensitivity=0.45
with also lowering the in-game mouse sens settings.

...In OpenGL mode, fixed by entering the commands to game console: /gap_iDepthBits=24 /ApplyVideoMode()
Screens turns black with switch OpenGL to Direct3D in fullscreen mode. Everything is fine in windowed mode.
Slow Direct3D Mode

Game is not very enjoyable without using Luxtorpeda which will use a native vulkan source port, which runs perfectly.
NETRICSA text is somewhat small and hard to read.
Severe artifacts when using OpenGL. Selecting DIrect3D seems to fix these artifacts.
Framerate hovered around 30-40 FPS. Perfect 60 when using Luxtorpeda.

Screen tearing, fixed by /gap_iSwapInterval=1 in the console (F1 in-game)
Works like on Windows

Text between levels is hard to read, but magnifier (steam+L1) works fine
Download luxorpedia using protonup-qt. Select luxorpedia in the same window you would normally select a proton version. Upon starting the game, Luxorpedia automatically downloads the SeriousSamClassic-VK source port, which seems to work great.
Played for 2 hours, no issues found. It even seems to fix the slow fire rate bug. With the tommy gun at least.

Change to direct3d to fix graphical bugs
NETRICSA text is tiny, but not essential to completing the game.
change to direct3d in video settings
Game performed well for the first hour of gameplay, but became extremely stuttery afterwards. Something to do with the rate of fire bug maybe? requires more testing if you are brave
Extreme stuttering after an hour of play
Once you fix the visuals with a couple of console commands then you're in for a blast from the past
You must utilize a couple of console commands in order to fix the garbled visuals: /gap_iDepthBits=24 and /ApplyVideoMode()
Graphics will be heavily garbled upon starting up the game, I recommend opening the game's console and using these two commands: /gap_iDepthBits=24 /ApplyVideoMode()
Once you apply the second command, the graphics should be fixed.
Thanks to hcats' solution on the Classics: Revolution ProtonDB page, anyone can easily fire up the classic Sam games with minimum fuss. Though I recommend also using the console command /inp_fMouseSensitivity=0.45 to get mouse sensitivity to your liking as it may be too fast for most people by default, even with the lowest sensitivity settings in the options menu. Just tinker with the value until you feel it's just right for you.

I don't think the average person would have a good experience with this one, black screens, artifacts and more if you don't tinker.
The game was unplayable on the default graphics setting as others have said. You must change it from OpenGL to Direct3D or there will be artifacts and crazy stuff going on all over the place and unplayable. Once you change that the artifacts are gone.
Had to be in windowed or would be a black screen
Performance is all over the place, I tried capping it at 60 to start but that was rough. So i tried 40, which was better but still had dips into the low 30's. Campaign ran much worse than Multiplayer.
Artifacts if you don't start the game the right way, black screen if you try fullscreen mode and a strange window that partly came up on first start of the game and that has shown up each time I start the game that seems to go away with the press of the A button.
Multiplayer ran better than the Singleplayer did
You can get it up and running but the performance is inconsistent and there are steps you must take to play the game, unless you want artifacts, black screens and other annoyances. I would suggest staying away. The one good thing was the controls from community member M3TaBoLiC, controlled well with the steam controller.
super important: this game is a bit of a hassle to get working properly, follow these steps:
- if upon starting the game you are stuck with the Serious Sam logo and what looks like half of a window, dont worry, just press Enter or Esc, the game is trying to tell you you might need to change the graphic settings when running the game for the first time, but the Steam Deck does not show this message properly
- the default OpenGL rendering is almost unplayable, full of artifacts
- EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: in the graphics options set the game to windowed mode, the Steam Deck will stretch the image to fit the whole screen so the game still looks fullscreen
- change the rendering method to Direct3D, if you didnt set the game to windowed mode previously, the screen will go completely black and it will be a nightmare to revert the change
when booting the game up for the first time the game tries to display a message but it does not show properly
the default OpenGL rendering method has severe artifacts
changing the rendering method while fullscreen would cause the whole screen to go black, difficult to revert
the default mouse sensitivity is weird, X axis way more sensitive than the Y axis
in order to run the game properly is very important to follow these steps:
- if upon starting the game for the first time, you might be stuck with the Serious Sam logo and what looks like an unreadable half of a window, just press Enter or Esc, the game is trying to inform you that, upon running the game for the first time, you might need to change graphics settings, the Steam Deck does not show this message properly
- the default rendering option, OpenGL, is unplayable, full of artifacts
- EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: go to video options and change the game to WINDOWED mode, the Steam Deck will stretch the image to fit the screen anyways
- switch rendering mode to Direct3D, if you didnt change the game to windowed mode the screen will go black, this is difficult to revert since you will have to navitage the menus blindly
sensitivity was too high so i had to use the /inp_fMouseSensitivity = command in the game console

(GOG version) Works good after enabling DirectX render
Default render shows black in fullscreen - Alt+Enter to window mode, than in appeared menu set video render to DirectX.
Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1 and enabling DirectX render.
Serious Sam TFE has mouse acceleration on by default. Disable that unless you want your aiming to feel horrendous.
Using the OpenGL renderer resulted in unplayably severe polygon warping. Switching to Direct3D and restarting worked fine.
Though Serious Sam TFE has both widescreen and 1280x800 options, no combination of them seems to fill the Steam Deck screen. Your screen will be heavily letterboxed if both are enabled.
Online servers are dead, but I was able to connect to a Russian multiplayer server so I can only assume it works.
After you switch to Direct3D in the graphic options and disable mouse acceleration, the game plays fine with a custom controller config. Widescreen support is subpar and you'll have to make a choice between letterboxes or pillarboxes.
Worked as good as on Windows.
With Proton Experimental it is excellant work now, save/load work too.

The game is running fine!
I used to have issues with save games but it is working good now!
Sound latency is high with the default driver in use. Switch to the WaveOut driver in the game's audio settings for lower latency.
Black screen on startup after the Croteam logo. Press Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen back to a window, and you should see the menu appear. You can then enable fullscreen in the game's graphics settings and it should work as usual.
Make sure "Mouse acceleration" is enabled in the Players & Controls options menu. Otherwise, the mouse sensitivity setting will do nothing.
It's impossible to open the console with an AZERTY keyboard layout. As a workaround, switch to an US QWERTY keyboard temporarily whenever you need to open the console.
Tested with the game's OpenGL renderer.

Does not run with default proton
Proton 5.0-10 works

Works perfectly after install
I am running an .exe install downloaded from GOG. Game was initially installed using Wine, and is now running from Steam launcher using standard Proton with no issues.

Works perfectly without tweaks or issues
With Proton 5.x none of the tweaks recommended by earlier posters seem to be required. Saving or loading from the menu works fine. Good performance at maximum detail level (unsurprisingly for a 19 year old game running on modern hardware).
Had to select openGL as the renderer.
When I first booted the game I was presented with a black screen, but I could hear the game audio. I pressed alt + enter to activate windowed mode and got an image, then proceeded to select openGL as the renderer and had no more graphical issues.
Game crashes if I try to save the game. Quick save (F6) and quick load (F9) works and is what I used.

Playing is extremely good, only have to set to windowed mode and only quicksave/quickload works.

Works great but saving the game crashes it!

runs great, no issues

After some testing, my last report (The one right before this.) is still the same, just wanted to add that quick saving and quick loading work perfectly.

First time running this game greeted me with graphical glitches. Fixed by writing: gap_iDepthBits=24 ApplyVideoMode()
IN TWO SEPARATE LINES. Don't write them in the same line, write one, hit Enter and then write the other.
As to why I gave this game a Silver review, is because it randomly crashed while I was clicking on Save.

Working perfectly out of the box.

Like native.

Graphical glitches - ruining the game experience. None of the fixes provided helped remedy the issue.

The game runs fine in OpenGL mode in 4k but with graphical glitches.

You have to write: gap_iDepthBits=24 ApplyVideoMode() in a console to avoid graphical glitches. Source: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4576

OpenGL rendered seems fine with no glitches. DX9 renderer black screens. Don't try to Alt-tab the game.

Visual glitches with OpenGL renderer(walls and moving doors are completely transparent). Dx9 renderer blackscreens
