Base game works perfectly out of the box
Haven't tried mods yet. Multiplayer with two buddies over several hours showed no issues.
Not working
Couldn't get the game to run with any Proton (and Proton-GE) version. A Linux version is planned though.
Game did not launch without the "PROTON_LOG=1 %command%" parameter, but after configuring that it runs without any issues, for some reason.
"PROTON_LOG=1 %command%" launch option
Works good enough after adding the custom parameter, with some minor performance and rendering issues
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Text rendering seems off
bottom part of the fullscreen window is cut-off
During "Cookie Storm" the cookies appear to be flying up vertically, almost impossible to hit with the cursor.
Launching it with the standard compatibility tool leads to issues with audio (no music)
Works perfectly fine these days, maybe still a tad slower than expected
Seems a bit slow but nothing major
In certain scenes it seems a bit too slow (though I don't have the best hardware)
Loading times seem very long, but I'm not sure whether that's better on Windows or not
Seems to work fine, with slight performance issues
Seems to be a tad slow at times, but I'm unsure whether that's Proton or the general game optimization status
Multiplayer sessions with two friends worked without a hitch
protontricks 50650 d3dcompiler_47
I've had some issues with positioning the camera correctly, and sometimes it seemed to drift on its own
Seems to slightly stutter at times
Without protontricks the game crashes after the intro logos
Be aware that it takes a loooooong time to load the main menu due to online services being disabled, but that's the same on Windows
Runs much, much faster than the native version provided on Steam. No other issues apart from the occasional crashes (which are annoying)
Crashed a few times right after loading the game, once at the start of a cutscene, and once when killing a zombie
Tested with Proton 5.0-5
Works perfectly out of the box
Multiplayer with two friends worked like a charm
Works perfectly so far
No issues in online multiplayer session with two friends
There might have been one instance (in a 3.2 hour session) were the game slowed down for a couple of seconds, but that might also have been caused by something executing in the background
Didn't seem to properly connect from inside the game but accepting an invite from within Ubisoft Connect worked without issue
Works fine out of the box, with slight performance issues.
Runs somewhat slower than on Windows. Note: The blue arrows in the tutorial really kill the performance, but they show up in no other part of the game AFAIK.
Almost perfect, apart from some text weirdness
Text flows out of its boxes at times, potentially even cut off by the edge of the screen
Everything works out of the box
seems to sometimes hang on exit though (needed to kill the process)
/dxadapter=0 /borderless=0
protontricks 8190 d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47
Without the tinkering steps it wouldn't launch at all. With protontricks alone it launched with a black screen. Not all of the steps/parameters might be necessary, but this is what ended up working for me.
Works perfectly
I couldn't find any issues with the game. Seems to work perfectly out of the box.
Almost perfect, aside from a small issue with windowing
Mouse cursor is able to escape the window, even if fullscreen is selected. Changing it to "Window" and then back to "Fullscreen" fixes it, but has to be done every time the game is launched.
Framerate dropped significantly in one scene, otherwise fine
Changed /steamapps/compatdata/356190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/WB Games/Shadow of War/Render.cfg to adjust "ScreenHeight16by9" "1080.000000" and "ScreenWidth16by9" "1920.000000"
Resolution can't be changed in game, has to be done by editing the config file
Works perfectly after disabling Steam overlay
At first the game wouldn't load for me but after disabling the Steam overlay, as mentioned in some other reports, it works perfectly in singleplayer. I've played for many hours now without any issue. Haven't tried the multiplayer.
Demo: After installing the VC 2022 redist via protontricks it works fine, if maybe slightly slow
vcrun2022
Seems to run a bit slow given the not too complex visuals, but this might just be an optimization issue
Demo doesn't launch at all without installing the runtime (and has an error message to that regard)
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
It might work for you without the parameter. On first launch it seemingly froze for me and simply switching workspaces fixed it, but on subsequent launches that workaround didn't do it anymore (almost progresses a little bit and then freezes again). With the launch parameter there is no such issue, and no switching of workspaces required.
Works perfectly out of the box
In my previous report I assumed it didn't work correctly with newer Proton versions or without launch parameters but this was a general issue caused by enabling "Force full composition pipeline" in nvidia-settings, and not a Proton or game issue. With standard system settings there is no problem at all.
Working perfectly
No issues with multiplayer, even when not hosting myself
At first I thought loading was a bit slow, but then I checked and it took roughly the same amount of time on Windows. Can't reproduce any of the issues other reports mention (graphical corruption, slowness when joining a multiplayer game hosted by a different player). Seems to work just as well as on Windows.
Demo: Wasn't able to get it working
VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr VKD3D_SHADER_MODEL=6_6 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
After tinkering a bit with different launch options mentioned here the furthest I could get is the initial logos. This is followed by a black screen that doesn't seem to end no matter how long I wait.
Works fine if you never open the menu
Game slows to a crawl after entering the menu. This can sometimes be fixed by quickly pressing the menu button several times in a row, but it's a lottery. Best to use the menu as rarely as possible, and "Quit to Title" after to get the game running normally again. Can sometimes also happen after entering the ship.
Since the menu is mostly for customization and lore you can schedule it so you do all of that reading and customizing at once, then reload the game so it's fast again.
DXVK_CONFIG_FILE=~/.config/dxvk.conf %command%
In order to solve the severe performance issue with the game's menu you have to create a dxvk config file with the following entry: dxgi.maxDeviceMemory = 4096
, where the number is something a bit lower than your GPU's VRAM in MB. In my case the VRAM is 6144 MB, so I chose above value.
Current Proton Experimental is already a bit better in regards to the menu performance issue, but after opening the menu several times still slows to a crawl without the config fix.
Works perfectly out of the box
I didn't experience any obvious issues with the gameplay or performance. No crashes so far in more than 3 hours of playtime.
Works perfectly after you initially move the game window to a different workspace
Had to move game window to a different workspace, otherwise white screen
Performance degrades significantly during long sessions, otherwise good
Game seems to suddenly (not gradual) slow down every new in-game day, requiring me to lower the graphics settings level one step each time it happens. After a couple of days it runs very slow even at lowest settings. Changing back and forth some settings (or the overall level) can sometimes improve performance a bit again.
Several long sessions with two friends without any issues (aside from game bugs)
No noticeable issues in sessions with two other players
With Proton 8 it freezes during loading for me, advancing some frames while in the background or on different workspace, but freezes again upon switching back to it
Works perfectly so far
Played a couple of sessions with two friends, no issues
In my previous report I assumed it didn't work correctly with newer Proton versions but this was a general issue caused by enabling "Force full composition pipeline" in nvidia-settings, and not a Proton or game issue. With standard system settings there is no problem at all.
Everything working fine out of the box
Multiplayer session with two friends worked perfectly
I think there was slight stuttering right after the first launch (I assume some shaders compiling or similar), but after that it worked without a hitch. Other reports mention that this might be a thing on Windows too.
Playable, with occasional severe performance issues that can impact gameplay
Sometimes the whole window gets corrupted after Alt+Tab
Occasional severe slowdown of gameplay in multiplayer, after which everything gets replayed in quick time lapse until it catches up. Some sessions I have no issues with that at all, others it happens often.
When it's a lucky session without performance degradation it runs perfectly. When you're unlucky it's a chore to get through (or it kills you because commands are lagging)
Works perfectly fine, with maybe slight performance issues
(Epic version) Videos don't work and you sometimes have to start a session twice, but otherwise perfect
Seems to sometimes stutter a bit, but that might also be my hardware specs
Seems to sometimes freeze when starting a session. Process has to be killed and restarted.
Videos don't work for me. Installing vcrun2022 via winetricks made the studio logo intros appear, but none of the longer videos work, and the main menu background looks like a TV test screen.
Multiplayer worked fine for the 8 hours I've played it with 2 friends
Native version works out of the box
There are reports of slowdowns for long sessions, and I've seen something similar in the longest one I've played, but those same reports also exist for Windows, so it doesn't seem like it's a Linux issue (even a dev log mentioned it)
Played through much of the campaign in co-op online without issues
I have to switch to Proton 7 to prevent it freezing up at the start, but this has been an issue with almost every game currently (might be an issue with my particular setup)
Works perfectly out of the box, apart from universal, non-Proton, game bugs
Played through the whole main campaign as well as the Tomb Kings expansion with two friends. No noticeable issues (apart from those that also affect the Windows versions, like having to sometimes restart the session to be able to talk to quest-giver NPCs)
In my previous report I assumed it didn't work correctly with newer Proton versions but this was a general issue caused by enabling "Force full composition pipeline" in nvidia-settings, and not a Proton or game issue. With standard system settings there is no problem at all.
