The game shows an error screen that needs to be bypassed using the touchscreen
The controller did not work on the main menu. Fixed by enabling Steam input from the game's controller settings within Steam OS.
A prompt appears on launch saying a save is corrupted. One of the five save slots is taken by the corrupted save, but the others work fine. So does cloud saving.
The game has quirks. It can crash in the character menu, which is fixed by using Proton GE. It shows an error screen that needs to be bypassed using the touchscreen. The controller may not be recognized in-game past the splash screens, which requires changing the Steam Input settings of the game (for some, it needs to be disabled - for others, like me, it needs to be enabled). The game is set to 1080p while 720p seems like a better fit for the Deck (it can be changed easily in the settings). Finally, a corrupted save files is apparently created upon launch and takes one of the five slots available. Just ignore it.
It's a shame the game has all these quirks, because it otherwise runs like a charm on the Deck with all settings enabled at 720p. It hovers between 70 and 80 fps, meaning it is easy to lock it to your preferred refresh rate. 1080p 40fps works great too but the game seems a little battery hungry, so I decided to go for 720p 45 (on OLED) and set the TDP to 12 to leave some room for the more hectic moments.

Change Proton version deletes the save
Stutters - Lock the monitor at 120hz fix this
Running GE 9-5 runs the game perfectly without crashing. The game is supposed to crash when cycling through menus.
Keeps giving an error as if it's letting you know its not compatible with the device.
Cloud save also works now, managed to transfer my save after switching to a whole new deck.
Played fine. No issues.
Each time I booted the game I received a warning about corrupted save files. However, my save files were fine each time.
changed resolution to 720p
common corrupt save data warning
game seemingly crashes when going into menu and pressing LB to change menus. crashes when reaching menu just before save/load menu
crashes when swapping in-game menus
First thing to keep in mind the "Save corrupted" is a thing that happens on Windows too because the devs never fixed but don't worry just use another Save slot and it works just fine, i have one save from 2021 and still works, Sunset Overdrive runs smooth just like it does on Windows, for anyone that have Steamdeck this is a must game to play.
Ignore the warning about saves corruption it works just fine.
Just click on OK and the window will disappear and the game will launch fine
I don't understand why this game is noted as non functionnal in Steam for the Deck. It works great and is a great game to play on a portable.
Apart from the janky messages on startup, the game plays and looks great
On startup, the game shows a message "corrupted save" which also happens on windows. This can be safely ignored. However the save slot occupied by the "corrupted" save shouldn't be deleted. It's possibly caused by the Steam cloud save file in the game's save folder. The game can be played normally, auto-saving works and the other open save slots can be used.
I played the game on Steam Deck, docked to the TV @1080p it plays perfectly with the framerate mostly between high 50-60 fps, some dips to high 40, when there's a lot going on.
These are the in-game settings I'm using:
- Uncap fps in the in-game menu (there is a simple setting to lock fps to 30, 60 or have it uncapped)
- SSAO anti-aliasing turned off
- Depth-of-field turned off
- Motion Blur turned off
- Film Grain turned off
- V-Sync off
In the Steam Deck overlay thing, I have the FPS limit set to 60.
No other special settings.
When running the game first time, a window pops up that says something about your hardware. You just need to click ok (you can do this with a controller) and the game will start. Then the "corrupted save" message shows at startup which can also be safely ignored (happens on windows as well).
game wont launch past 1st popup
Works great with little trouble
Gives warning about corrupt save games, but works fine anyway.
-1 dialog box appears on launch, which can be tapped with the touch screen -The 'save game corrupt' message is no problem. 4 save slots are still good. -Steam cloud saves works fine with no tinkering.
Played on 40fps
At launch an error window pops up that does a hardware check and concludes that the minimum requirements are not met. Just press ok via the touch screen and the game boots normally.
There is a corrupted save by default and gives a warning every time you open the game. Ignore it and don't try to delete it as the game crashes. Just create a new save game and save and load from there
The game runs perfectly fine with proton 7, bit I just chose to run it with proton 8. Did not have any issues with 7 or 8. 60fps out of the box
Runs great. Only minor annoyances.
To improve performance lower the resolution from the 1080p default to 800p.
There's a launch check, when you press play, which opens a window with some kind of warning. Just press "okay" with the touchscreen and the game opens normally.
There's a message when you open the game which complains against a corrupted save file. This seems some kind of issue with steam cloud save game. I just disabled cloud save inside game options and don't use that "corrupted save" slot. No problems doing that.
The game runs great. You only need to know about the corrupted game save file and the issues with Steam's cloud saves.
Lamentablemente las resoluciones disponibles son pocas, y la relación de aspecto no se puede modificar tampoco. Así que el juego presenta unas pequeñas franjas negras arriba y abajo.
Finished game with lots of crashes
Not really a problem with saves but a message pops up on every start claiming your save files are corrupt. This seems to happen on windows aswell according to comments on steam forums
VERY crashy. Probably crashed 40+ times during my playthrough. Even crashes the entire steam client sometimes
Crashes makes it hard to recommend this game but once you launch it enough times it stops crashing for that play session. And the game is very fun to play when not crashing.
It also auto saves frequently so very little progress is lost.
Also tried GE-Proton since some reports claimed that fixed the crashes. It did not change anything for me.
Steam Deck (Linux) fix for corrupted save file message on startup
Naviagte to
'/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/847370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Sunset/Saves/YOURSAVEFOLDERNUMBER/'
and edit and save the file
'steam_autocloud.vdf'
as an empty file (delete its contents and save)
Turn off Steam Cloud Saves for Sunset Overdrive in the Deck's game settings before starting the game and you should be good to go.
It should be noted that I followed these steps before playing the game for the first time so I never had a cloud save on Steam for Sunset Overdrive. The message never appeared for me.
There's a window that pops up at boot saying that one of the hardware checks had failed. Clicking okay dismisses this window and the game plays normally.
Cloud saves do not work on this title.
Switched the game from 1080p (default setting) to 720p and also limited the fps to 40 via steam menu.
Crashes if you try to save manually or remove the "broken savegame" - Autosave and saving to another slot works tho.
DXVK_ASYNC=1
After you open the game for the first time, it will notify you that you have a corrupted save game; even before you've played the actual game.
This will make it so anytime you goto the main menu it tells you, your save has been corrupted; don't worry though your actual save game is fine.
Some stuttering whilst playing on the normal Proton versions. Switching to GE and setting DXVK_ASYNC=1
in the Launch Options fixed it for me.
Random crashes. They don't seem to occur often.
The game warns about corrupted save files
Its not clear what triggers the crashes
In this state, the game is pretty unplayable. Not because it doesn't work, but because you have to always be scared of crashes.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
Warns about corrupted saves. This can be ignored
At first game stutters a lot, slowly gets better, and then it crashes.
Other than the crashing and the save game issue (no cloud sync), the game plays and looks amazing.
I have my system set to default to 40fps to improve battery life.
There is a screen that pops up that says testing/validation of your hardware failed IIRC. I was able to simply use the touch screen to get past it, however.
The game tells me that my saves are corrupted. And I do not believe that cloud syncing is working either (probably a good thing in this case). But my save was still there and I could play despite the message.
I was able to replicate a crash twice. I pressed the Start button and simply went over to Options to see what I could mess with and the game crashed. It crashed a second time doing the same thing.
Works well out of the box. Make sure to choose 720p in-game graphic settings to get the best performance
A check requirements screen appears. Just use the touchscreen to choose OK.
By default the game has 1080p HD resolution chosen by default in the in-game graphics settings. Just choose 720p and the game could reach easily 60 fps with all high
A corrupted save file appears all the time. It's related with Steam cloud. The function isn't working properly in the game. Deactivating cloud sync doesn't change anything the bug is stills there.
Comprehensively, game works just fine, albeit the audio.
After several minutes of gameplay, audio such as dialogue and even background music (FX are still present) immediately cut off. Sometimes it would come back for a split second then proceeds to stop.
Temporary Solution: Close the game and go back.
Game notifies that you have a corrupted save file. Although this does not pose a problem as you can create a new save file.
Game is fun to play on Steam Deck
To improve battery while getting a constant 40 fps: Frames: 40 TDP: 6 GPU: 800
On startup, game is checking for your systems hardware. Use a rebind of the trackpad as a mouse, to click it or use STEAM button + Trackpad to use mouse
On launch, game tells that save files are corrupted. If you click "OK", sou are able to load them anyway
The autosave/cloudsave does not work, but normal manual saves work.
I was able to get the settings to near max and kept a locked 30FPS the whole time. You really can't get a good 60FPS out of this game on Steam Deck. I may try to see how well the game runs at 40FPS in the future.
gives a directx error at launch use touch screen to dismiss plays perfect after that.
Works perfectly fine out of the box
The game claims that your save is currupted on every launch, but they aren't and you can load all saves normally.
Fun game, the music is also great. It doesnt take itself serious which is a nice change of pace.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Corruption of save. Crashes when deleting save.
The game stutters heavily at times regardless of proton version or storage medium, moving it to an HDD seems to help slightly.
The game would crash randomly, also after playing steam crashes when processing shaders.
Shader prcoessing leads to steam crashing.
The game runs fine for the most part, it stutters heavily though on an NVME, moving it to an HDD is recommeded. Also I dont know why, but steam keeps crashing every time I close the game, this only happens with this game.
Plays beatifully by default, no tinkering, runs even better with some tinker
game always says save game corrupted, just ignore, manual saves crashes.
Never crashed once, only crashes when messing with save games, 8 hours on record ATM.
Runs perfectly fine by default but you can reduce most shader cache stutter by using Proton GE with:
DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Steam cloud saves are not read by the game properly, and are instead read as a corrupted save, however if you start a new save saving should work properly.
Game will crash at random moments.
Crashes upon trying to manually save. Auto save seems to be okay. There is also a message about a corrupted save file. This can be resolved by turning off steam could saves.
Stuttering upon launching the game. alt + tab to another window and back seems to fix.
warned about slow CPU, played music + initial video, then crashed within 5 seconds
Big shader cache stutters
Game crashes frequently and randomly, usually during cutscenes
Game hangs at random points in cutscenes and the small portion I was able to play started off with a lot of stutters
Gives error about corrupted save games, but it seems to be working fine
Lots of stuttering at the start
Game hangs at random points in cutscenes and process has to be manually killed
7.0rc6-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Stutters observed initially.
Stutters were resolved by using corectrl to set cpu profile to 'performance' in combination with feral gamemode.
Many users on both windows and linux have reported save game issues. I have not experienced any - and I think it is because before running this game I followed this guide. I advise doing this before you start play so you don't have to worry about doing this stuff breaking your saves. It is written for windows but is applicable to linux. It advises first disabling steam cloud saving.
It also advises deleting steam_autocloud.vdf
. On linux, this can be found in the following directory in the prefix steam creates for the game: "your user"/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/847370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games. Note for other newbies like me - the dot in /.steam/ means the directory is hidden - you need to access it from terminal or have view hidden files on in your file manager.
Constant crashing or stuttering. Issues with corrupted save files.
Every time I load the game, it says the saves are corrupted. If you try to delete a corrupted save, the game crashes. Hitting continue playing seems to work fine though.
Game ran at really high FPS most of the time, but constantly ran into stuttering.
Couldn't play for more than ~5 minutes without running into a crash that required me to kill the process.
Game ran especially smooth on Windows. If at least the frame stutter was solved, it would be better.
On frame stutter, button press is unregistered.
Frequent stuttering if you are moving the character/camera. Revisiting the place has lesser stuttering. Frames can drop down to 15 or stay frozen for a few seconds. Uneven pacing of frames, so despite 60fps, it doesn't feel smooth sometimes. During this time, your button press isn't registered.
Audio still plays in the background while everything gets frozen.
Runs just as well as on windows.
After loading my cloud save from steam, the game accuses it of being corrupt. However, the save seems to work fine after dismissing the popup.
Completed the game without any graphical or audio bugs or crashes
Game gives a corrupted game file warning but the other saves work. If you try loading the corrupted save it crashes
