6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Minor FPS issues in some scenes, but I can't tell if these are attributable to proton. Great performance otherwise.
Recent proton or nvidia drivers updates resolved all stability and graphical issues I previously experienced, and now it works OOTB with no problems whatsoever. Highly recommend the CPU performance fix from PCGW, it reduced CPU usage from constant 50% to 10-20% on my hardware with no side effects.
PYROVEIL=1 PYROVEIL_CONFIG=...../pyroveil/hacks/ac-shadows-nvidia-570-stable/pyroveil.json WINE_DISABLE_HARDWARE_SCHEDULING=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=1 DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_SETTINGS=NGX_DLSS_FG_OVERRIDE=on,NGX_DLSSG_MULTI_FRAME_COUNT=4 %command%
Pyroveil necessary on Nvidia. Baring that, the experience is flawless. Everything seems to work just fine, including rayracing (RTGI diffuse+specular), HDR, DLSS Upscaling, DLSS Frame Generation (overridden to 4x using dxvk-nvapi settings), Steam Controller support. I did not encounter even a single crash so far 30 hours into the game. Performance is good enough: on 4k with DLSS balanced and most settings maxed out with just a few exceptions, I get 60 fps on the RTX 5080, or 130-170 fps with the 4x framegen. No stutters, glitches, no trouble installing the built-in lite Ubisoft Launcher, really quite a pleasant experience. The only issues I spotted are very minor:
- The game wrongly complains about being installed on an HDD rather than its preferred SSD. This doesn't seem to have any impact besides an annoying message on boot.
- The in-game Ubisoft Store complains about connection issues and doesn't seem to work correctly, preventing microtransaction purchases.
I used GE Proton to use FSR before it landed in mainline proton.
Tested full campaign and ~20h in multiplayer at max settings on 4k resolution. Absolutely no issues, stellar performance.
I used GE Proton to get access to FSR before it landed in mainline proton.
Works perfectly in DX11 mode, tested 35+ hours in both career mode and multiplayer. G29 wheel is recognized, uses correct button prompts, and force-feedback works as well (it feels odd compared to native F12017, but apparently this year's F1 has a different FF feel). Voice recognition works well. On my hardware, 4k resolution runs at 60+ FPS at "high" settings, 1080p runs at 60+ FPS at "ultra high". Only drops below 60FPS in the main menu and when navigating garage displays. Some graphical glitches appear from time to time, but identical artefacts can be seen when running the game on Windows.
Works out of the box with no issues. 4k resolution gets very laggy, but I can't really complain because officially the game only supports up to 1080p resolutions. I resolved audio cracking with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
, but I believe this is specific to my setup and not a general issue with the game.
This is basically a Flash game + a Flash player in exe (with aux stuff such steam achievements support), so you can also play it using a native Flash player too.
Very good performance out of the box, 70+ hours tested on all maps in both single- and multi-player modes. On my hardware, stable 60 FPS in 2k resolution at maxed out settings - except for reflections, which tremendously affect performance. Steam Controller works just fine.
As others say, copy dlls from Bin/Win64Shared to Bin/Win64, then runs perfectly. With my hardware, ultra textures and medium other settings I get stable 60FPS at 2K resolution with FXAA. Played 30+ hours, no issues of any kind.
Works, performance is fine, but various technical issues made the game unplayable for me
Very minor, but audible, rare crackling, at exact same moments as graphical stutters.
Grass does not render.
Alt-tab has ~50% chance to crash the game. Wide variety of resolutions work well, fullscreen/windowed/borderless. However, the game seems to be frequently switching display modes (which can be observed with a flickering gsync indicator), and during these transitions the visuals stutter a lot.
Steam controller worked, although only in controller's desktop mode, and only with Origin in-game overlay disabled.
Logitech G29 steering wheel was not detected at all, even though a game update introduced support for it.
During ~2h of playtime the game has crashed at least 4 times in seemingly random moments, in a middle of a cutscene, when switching between scenes, when switching to the menu - I did not notice a clear pattern here; at least at the start of the game the checkpoints are fairly sparse which made these crashes quite inconvenient.
I have tested the game using both official Proton 5.0.9 and custom 5.11-GE, with no perceivable difference.
Applying the user.cfg
fix mentioned by other reviews and locking the Origin directory to read-only does indeed improve performance, but major stutters persist.
Installation took me quite a while; Origin crashed with a different message every time. Restarting the installation process a few times did the trick, and once the game run successfully once, Origin issues never reoccurred.
Far too frequent random freezes that require replaying large sections of game due to spare savepoints in some sequences.
Very frequent freezes with no pattern or specific triggers. Particularly annoying as this game has relatively spare savepoints, and there are sequences with 30-60 minutes when progress cannot be saved. Usually alt+f4 closes the game, but quite frequently a full restart is necessary (GPU freeze?). Since crashes appear at random times, no area is inaccessible due to these issues and game can be completed, but requires a lot of patience.
I hear that this game has similar stability issues on Windows; but without the ability to compare the two I cannot in good faith give this game a positive rating, as gameplay is heavily impacted by frequent freezes.
6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Played in 4k@60fps with a Steam Controller. Zero issues and perfect performance.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
WineD3D does not support anti-aliasing, it's lack looks particularly ugly in this game where all backgrounds are hand-drawn.
DXVK does not work with this game due to https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/1318, thus you need to switch to WineD3D using the suggested launch option. This prevents the use of anti-aliasing, which looks very jarring, especially on high-resolution displays.
You must use this specific Proton-GE version, any other will crash at start (regardless of whether you use DXVK or WineD3D).
Occassionally crashes in some scenes, reloading a save a few times eventually lets you progress through the problematic part. It happened <8 times in my playthrough, each time I needed to retry 1-4 times.
Movies do not work, I suggest watching them on Youtube (there are just 6 of them, and only three actually matter, the rest are fun bonus).
CoZ translation patch installs without issues and works fine in-game.
Fully completable with default proton, though an extra flag is advised to prevent crashes
There are multiple moments in the game where it consistently. On average, there is about 1 such moment in each chapter. There is nothing specific about them, they are not linked to any specific game event or resource; but it is deterministic and 100% reproducible, so it won't progress after restarting.
A workaround that works for me is disabling DXVK with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
. However, graphics are degraded in this mode (severe aliasing on character models, config menu not rendering); so I recommend to play with default settings, save frequently and only restart the game with this WINED3D enabled to get through these crash-prone areas, and fall back to default settings soon afterwards.
The game has a fast-forward feature so that catching up to the crash point is very quick even if you don't save too often.
The "Committee of Zero" fan patch can be installed by running a custom executable with game's wine prefix, and it works very well.
Works perfectly OOTB
80% of the time it launches to a black screen (instead of intro logos and menu) and needs to be alt+f4'd. The remaining 20% of launch attempts work perfectly fine.
Works well with a really good performance at 4K, but controller support is broken and and graphics settings are not customizable.

Using Steam Controller only some buttons are mapped correctly, most are mismapped or do not respond at all. Must be played with K+M instead.
Crashes consistently when editing graphics settings, but the defaults were reasonable for my setup.
I needed to add PROTON_USE_SECCOMP=1
to launch the game.
