Unplayable unless you force compatibility with Proton, otherwise runs perfectly.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode as the game "captures" the input controls - you can see the desktop but are unable to interact with it (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon).
After install, trying to launch the game will cause Steam to advise that there is no "80s_Overdrive.exe". The binary never downloads.
To remedy this right-click 80's OVERDRIVE in your Steam library, click "Properties", in the pop-up window's left column click "Compatibility", check the box next to "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and select a Proton version from the drop-down box (I used "Proton Experimental" but any recent version should work).
After a small download the game should be playable.
Completed career mode with no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter). There are no graphics options. Game is controlled by keyboard & mouse only at first but you can switch to gamepad in options menu, both control methods can be customised and work fine.
On a 1920x1080 monitor part of the game was displayed in the top left corner and the rest of the screen was black. Most of the gameplay area was not visible making it unplayable.
Graphics displayed perfectly after forcing Proton 3.7-8 in compatibility options. Other versions tested (Experimental, 7.0-3, 5.13-6) did not fix the display problem.
There are no resolution options in the menu and the game runs in fullscreen only.
Game can crash randomly, cutting short your current run. As this is an arcade-style fighting game a full playthrough can take around 20 minutes so not much progress is lost.
Crashes don't seem to be Proton related, Steam forum users report similar issues under Windows.
Completed a couple of playthroughs, apart from issues detailed above there were no problems.
Keyboard and gamepad controls both work great. Multiplayer untested.
On a 1920x1080 monitor part of the game was displayed in the top left corner and the rest of the screen was black. Most of the gameplay area was not visible making it unplayable in fullscreen.
As a workaround set the game to play in windowed mode (non-resizeable, 1280x720).
There are no resolution options in the menu besides switching from fullscreen/windowed mode.
Crashed twice randomly in The Spider God DLC. No crashes during the rest of the game.
You may have to quit and restart levels because you are unable to progress due to glitches, for example you'll be frozen in place or switches can't be interacted with (this happened around 5 times in total). Also lots of minor (and sometimes funny) animation glitches.
These are not Proton related, the game is also buggy in Windows.
Completed full playthrough, had to force use of Proton Experimental or 7.0-3 to get graphics to display (otherwise just a black screen with sound).
Keyboard + mouse and gamepad controls both work great.

Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen or windowed mode as the game is rendered always on top of your desktop (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon).
Completed full playthrough, no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter) with graphics options maxed out at 1080p/60Hz.

Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen or windowed mode as the game is rendered always on top of your desktop (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however in windowed mode you are able to minimize the game as a workaround.
Completed full playthrough with no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter).
Used Logitech Gamepad F310, which was detected automatically.
Multiplayer untested.
Game works near-perfectly with some minor issues.
There is some very faint crackling while music plays, nothing annoying, it actually sounds like it's playing off a vinyl record.
While using the sub-weapon selection screen during the top-down dungeon areas, the 'scrolling grid' effect in the background renders above the text, obscuring the menu.
The same screen displays normally in the side-scrolling areas.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode as the game is rendered always on top of your desktop (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works in windowed mode.
Experienced one crash while in options menu switching from fullscreen to windowed mode (game window froze and I closed it using the Steam client). Unable to reproduce, probably a one-off crash.
Completed full playthrough with great performance (no lag or stutter) and one crash (detailed above).

Game works identically as on Windows, any issues are due to the game and not Proton.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works fine in windowed mode.
Completed full playthrough, no crashes and good performance (occasional lag) at 1080p (frame rate is capped at 30 fps).
Note on configuring advanced graphic settings: enabling Depth of Field and Back Buffer will prevent anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering from having an effect in-game. With Back Buffer disabled the main menu flickers a lot but is still usable.
Keyboard + mouse and gamepad controls all work great.
It just worksâ„¢, install and play.
Performance is similar to HITMAN 2016 port, played on same hardware.
All config options work as expected, no graphical or audio glitches.
Very stable, not one single crash in over 100 hours of gaming.
Multiplayer untested.

If you're using a gamepad map the analogue triggers and sticks in the options menu before playing, they will be incorrect by default.
Otherwise there are zero issues with the game.

Unplayable unless you "delete" movie folder, no in-game audio.
After install, trying to play the game will throw an error box:
AudioHelpers
Fialed XAudio2::CreateMasteringVoice()
and it will crash after Bandai Namco logo screen, unless you rename the movie folder to something else:
- Right-click Mr. DRILLER DrillLand in Steam library --> Manage --> Browse local files
- Open data.dx folder --> Rename "movie" folder to anything else
Once this is done the game runs perfectly EXCEPT there are no cut-scenes and no audio at all, everything is silent.
Aside from that all the options work (resolution, control remapping, keyboard/gamepad are all ok) and single/multi player works fine with no crashing or stutter.
Crash seems to also occur on some Windows setups according to other users https://steamcommunity.com/app/1126750/discussions/0/2568689796940315309/
Game installs and works perfectly.
Game runs flawlessly now, all audio and cut scenes play properly without any extra tinkering.

Used Logitech Gamepad F310, which was detected automatically.
Multiplayer/online functionality is no longer available as the servers have been shut down. Track editor is still usable.
Game works perfectly, config tool is a bit glitchy.
Played around with every game mode, no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter) with graphics options maxed out at 1080p/60Hz - except for the cutscene after winning a grand prix which tanks the frame rate for some reason (only 30 seconds long and it's skippable).
Majority of options are in a separate configuration tool, out of the box it's semi-usable. Most settings can be changed but some will cause it to crash (changing resolution, control bindings) and it will reset to default values.
Used Logitech Gamepad F310, which was detected automatically. Online multiplayer works flawlessly.
Installs and runs perfectly.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode as the game is rendered always on top of your desktop (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works fine in windowed mode.

Logitech Gamepad F310 did not work unless Steam Input was disabled.
To do this right-click Sunset Overdrive in library, click "Properties", in the pop-up window's left column click "Controller" and toggle "Disable Steam Input" from the override drop-down box.
After that the controller worked fine, although I mostly played using keyboard & mouse controls anyway.
Every time you launch the game you'll receive a message that there's a corrupted save file present. One of 5 available slots will be occupied by this corrupted save, which is related to the Steam Cloud (see thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/847370/discussions/0/2998799976093324300/).
You can actually ignore this and use the other available slots with no problem (I beat the game doing this) but if you want to remove it then:
1) From your Home folder go to "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/847370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/Sunset/Saves" and delete the file "steam_autocloud.vdf".
2) In your Steam library right-click Sunset Overdrive, click on "Properties" and in the pop-up window uncheck the option "Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud".
Experienced 3 crashes while playing, twice while accessing the map the game froze and had to be closed by alt-tabbing to the Steam client and quitting the game. Auto-saves are frequent so not much progress was lost.
Around 15 seconds or so after exiting the game normally the Steam client will shut itself down. You can simply relaunch Steam. This has happened every time so keep it in mind if you are downloading something in the background.
Played to completion (around 30 hours) with a few crashes and excellent performance at 1080p 60fps and all graphics options maxed. Besides the issues detailed above the game runs just about flawlessly.
Game installs and works perfectly.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode as the game is rendered always on top of your desktop (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works in windowed mode.
Completed full playthrough with no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter).

Just about runs perfectly, no major issues.
The audio volume of cutscenes is quiet, sometimes being drowned out by whatever background music is playing. Enable subtitles in case any dialogue is hard to hear.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works fine in windowed and borderless mode.
On every launch the game defaults to running in a minimized window, regardless of what your settings are. If you want to run fullscreen or borderless you'll have to set that in the graphics options on every session.
All other settings appear to work and save normally.
Completed full playthrough, no crashes and perfect performance (no lag or stutter) with graphics options maxed out at 1080p/60Hz. Keyboard + mouse and gamepad controls both work great.
Game works perfectly, except for videos.
Video cutscenes don't work (black screen) but they can be skipped.
Alt-tab does not work in fullscreen mode (at least in Linux Mint Cinnamon), however it works fine in windowed and borderless mode.
Completed all races and tried out every single player game mode, no crashes.
Performance is good at 1080p/60Hz with a mix of medium/high graphics settings. Maxing out settings causes the game to lag and the video card to overheat.
Used Logitech Gamepad F310, which was detected automatically, keyboard controls also work fine.
Online multiplayer untested.
Game runs near-perfectly with some audio issues.
No sound when playing any of the games at arcades (Out Run, Space Harrier etc).
Every few minutes there is very slight skipping of in-game audio, not a major problem but it's there.
Played to completion, no crashes or glitches in over 100 hours. At 1080p with most graphics options maxed or set on high, performance is very solid.
Installs and runs perfectly.
Played to completion, no crashes, glitches or any other issues in over 50 hours of gameplay.
At 1080p with most graphics options maxed or set on high, performance is excellent (better than Yakuza 0, running on same hardware).
Installs and runs perfectly.

At 1080p with most graphics options set on medium, performance is very good with only occasional frame rate dips in complex scenes.
