Crashes After Launch
After many different tests, the game does not appear to work at this time.
Requires fullscreen
to work.
- Open
winecfg
and setemulate virtual desktop
. - Launch game the game and set in game display to
Fullscreen
. - Exit the game and disable
emulate virtual desktop
Works great out of the box!
Using bspwm some oddities with toggling between floating and tiled windows. This causes the boundary of the window to get messed up. Easily fixed by having all windows floating that share space with the game.
Whenever saving, textures disappear and the terrain goes black. Game is still functional and saves work. Just need to reload the save to get textures back.
NOTE: I believe that my issues are unique to my WM and not to the game itself.
Works great out of the box
Alittle slowness upon first launch (splash screen) but nothing beyond that. Tested only campaign and single player games.
Works out of the box
Change your region to another then back to your native region to get matchmaking to work.
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1, PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
Uplay Connect causes the bulk of issues when trying to play. Once that's installed and working, game runs just fine.
Does Not Open After Launch
Clicking 'Play' from library will allow the game to run. You will get an initial splashscreen that appears to be validating your Steam account cred. This window will show for a moment then disappear. After this nothing happens, but the game will show as a running process with no game window. The process must be killed manually as clicking 'Stop' in the library does not do anything.
This issue does seem to affect Windows users as well as per the Steam community page for this game.
Game Launchers as White Window
The game launcher will run and download the needed files. Upon pressing play from the launcher a white window appears (the game window I presume) but it just sits there and nothing ever happens.
The window does appear over the game launcher and exiting the launcher kills both the window and launcher so no processes are stuck running.
Starts then self closes
Shows the logo, but quickly self closes. Game does use Easy Anti-Cheat.
Used https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install script
There is a pinned issue on the mf-install github repo that discusses issues persisting even after the media foundation fix. This, as pointed out the by user, seems to be caused by CPU core count exceeding 8 cores. As such an additional launch option should be set. I was able to confirm this once setting the launch option. I HIGHLY recommend reading the pinned issue on the github to get a better understanding before setting the launch option.
Requires version 5.0-x to be able to get certain textures to show up.
Set PROTON_USE_WINED3D launch option to get certain textures/areas to show up, otherwise they are invisible.
Cannot Open after launcher updates.
After clicking "Play Game" from the launcher, game states there was a suspicious request and self closes. Game does use GameGuard Anti-Cheat.
5.1-GE-2 (GloriousEggroll) GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll Custom Proton - Most recent release
Stutters and hang ups
Using Steam proton version, you must use PROTON_USE_WINED3D. However, there is heavy stuttering and freezes. Using GE proton minimizes this along with setting no esync to make the game very playable and the above issues tolerable.
Proton-6.4-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=xactengine3_7=n
This override setting should not be needed in GE version 6.5 or greater.
Works Out of the Box
Works with both controller and mouse/keyboard. Switching seemed fine.
Works Out of the Box
The game is a port and as such actually has issues. However, these issues exist solely because of the port (they are present on Windows). There are community mods/patches to fix/help these issues.
Proton-6.9-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Used GE Proton (6.9-GE-2)
Was unable to find any anti-cheat associated with the game.
Installed d3dcompiler_43
to fix 5005 function "transpose" is not defined
error.
Works out of the box
There seems to be a cutscene that is supposed to play before the main menu appears, but I didn't tinker around to get it to work. This is the only hiccup I had.
Game Launches as Empty White Window
The game launcher will run and download the needed files. Upon pressing play from the launcher a white window appears (the game window I presume) but it just sits there and nothing ever happens.
The window does appear over the game launcher and exiting the launcher kills both the window and launcher so no processes are stuck running.
Proton-5.4-GE-3 GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll 5.4-GE-3
FPS had to be set at 60 cap otherwise frames fluctuate heavily.
Prevents crashes and character disappearing when taking damage.
Game dims as if you've clicked outside the window when taking a screenshot.
The below issue is present on Linux and Windows: For some reason the game files seem to no longer work properly when attempting to launch via Steam. Steam claims there is a missing .exe when it's just named wrong. Attempting to adjust the naming issues causes the game to freeze at it's menu. If you launch the game via the game folder, there are missing assets/text. This also causes the game to not recognize your controller at all. The game did work just fine prior to Dec 2019 (controller and all). If this issue did not exist, I believe the game would work perfectly.
Works great out of the box
Works great with Xbox controller. Minor annoyance with cursor wanting to sit in the middle of the screen.
Seems to work out of the box
Help Menu does not work. It's just a empty window.
Works perfect out of the box
This game also runs in VR which WAS NOT tested in my playing. I'm using standard PC mode to play only.
Stops random crashing.
Disabling ESYNC stops any random crashing. Once this is done game runs perfectly.
Works Out of the Box
Game itself is full of glitches and bugs, but these are not related to Linux/Proton as they exist on Windows as well.
Works out of the box
Keyboard/mouse and controller both work and are swappable.
Works great out of the box
Small hang when first launched. Tested both xbox controller and keyboard. Both work as expected.
Works, but has some nuances
- Launch the game in safe mode to get the audio working.
- Controller does not seem to work properly as input is stuck as if "up" is pressed.
- Keyboard is required to play properly. Controller must be disconnected prior to game starting otherwise keyboard will not work.
5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Set to Windows 7 in winecfg
Game does work with Steam Proton, but cutscenes are not viewable.
To fix cutscenes:
- Use GE Proton
- Change Windows version to 7 via winecfg (WINEPREFIX="$HOME/path/to/prefix" winecfg)
- Choose DirectX Launcher after clicking Play
- Change from DirectX12 to DirectX11
Credit to eth0OS for his fix: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4312
Works great out of the box
Only at main menu.
Character models become distorted during combat.
Crashes during launcher updates
Cannot fully update the launcher to test to see if the game launches. Game does use Easy Anti-Cheat.
Does not work due to anticheat
Requires manual installation of Vcrun2010 DLLs. Once installed, game attempts to launch then fails during GameGuard authentication.
Works great out of the box
Played with Xbox controller. No issues with switching between controller and mouse/keyboard.
Works basically out of the box
Clicking outside the window when in fullscreen caused screen to go black. Turning off fullscreen in the game menu fixed the issue.
Functionality loss after clicking play from the custom game launcher
Game will install a custom launcher (my[dot]com). After clicking "Play" from that launcher the game launches. First screen is a settings changer. Mouse can be moved around the window and background animations play, but there is no clickable functionality to progress any further. Could not find any anti-cheat associated with this game.
Used Proton GE to get the opening cutscene to play. Steam overlay seems to nonfunctional.
This is needed to move from the save data selector to the actual level selector.
Cannot get cutscenes to work. I've tested various things to try and get these to work with no success. There are only a few, though, and they are skipable so you won't be stuck on them. The bulk of the game is playable.
Proton-6.9-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
GE Proton (6.9-GE-2)
Weird issue where the game detected fullscreen incorrectly. Had to go to windowed, but resolution options were off. Going back to fullscreen and restarting the game seemed to allow resolution to correct itself.
FPS seems to cap out at 30. Settings adjustments seemed to have no impact on this.
Even at 30fps the game seems to run just fine (doesn't seem like its running at 30). Tested originally with vanilla Steam Proton and the game crashed/had graphical issues. What unable to find if the game has anti-cheat or not.
Works fine out of the box
Game required manual termination as it did not close after choosing Exit from the menu.
Works out of the box
All the issues I had (crashes, resolution, windowing) are all present on the Windows version if played vanilla (no mods of any kind).
Using Proton 7.0-6 because Proton 8.0-1 caused severe input lag at the time. Have not tried upgrading the Proton version yet.
Works out of the box
Occassional crashes - these are present on Windows.
Runs natively
The game specs do not list Linux as an OS, but the game does run natively.
Early Access game. It has a public beta branch that supports Linux natively.
Prevent Crashing
Install xboxdrv via Arch AUR repo to prevent crashing. This is further explained by GloriousEggroll "Warframe needs xboxdrv running in the background as a service. This is an issue related to Steam only. If it does not detect a controller within 5 minutes the game will close." Source: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Disable VSYNC in game to fix. Set framerate limit.
GloriousEggroll (link mentioned in this post) has quite a few tips on how to get Warframe to run optimally. I used these tips with a generic Steam proton version and it works great.
Required to get the non-cinematic scenes to play in game. These are triggered manually by the player via an ingame means and can be ignored throughout the playthrough.
Works almost out of the box
Make sure to check the box "Force Use...." to fix this.
Game has partial controller support. Remapping the buttons in the menu is required to make it playable fully with controller.
Game starts will "Film Grain Noise" enabled. This will make the background look like there is a display issue. Turn this off if it annoys you.
