After the first startup, basically a perfect experience.
On first startup, the game will have a weird resolution (only a quarter of the screen). Exiting and reopening it did the trick for me.
Almost perfect but same bugs as other Unity games
FMV don't work and achievements don't unlock
Press play and enjoy
Both solo and multiplayer modes work. The first install takes some time to complete just as the other games of the trilogy.
Works as expected, same stuttering as on Windows
Everything works as it should, was able to 100% the game with no problem whatsoever, except some stuttering from time to time while flying or using the Batmobile.
Works fine since Proton 3.16
The online restored mod also works fine, I was able to play many sessions.
Apart from the tcmalloc problem and lighting artifacts, it works kinda well
Lighting artifacts can occur in outside environments or in Xen
Crashes frequently during loading screens, save often. Had a crash with a scripted explosion event once.
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/5043 => issue with LLVM 16.0 on Arch Linux, created a symlink instead of using LD_PRELOAD
Change the dynamtic lighting settings to "Potato" to be able to use the flashlight, any other setting will break it
Played through the base game and the DLCs, no problem. 1080p maxed out settings. Controller support is perfect.
Enable D9VK for better performance. PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
Same crashes as on Windows: "Filename error" but it's quite rare actually.
As previouly noted, you need to rename the Launcher.exe to Launcher.exe.old and BorderlandsGOTY.exe to Launcher.exe (just like Borderlands 2).
Perfect experience even with the lack of cutscenes
Cutscenes don't play due to the use of windows media codecs (wmv files)
Proton works great. Native version has no sound.
Played the game with both linux-zen and linux-tkg kernels, no problem in both cases. Really stable and high framerate, no stuttering.
Perfect out-of-the-box with controller and maxed out settings since proton 3.16ish
Offline only which limits many game features later
EAC doesn't allow you to go online
As EAC Proton isn't implemented (yet?) in this game, I wouldn't consider it "enjoyable" because of the many game modes you can't have access to
Played fine through the base game and the DLC. 1080p Ultra settings. Controller works perfectly. I would give a solid Gold rating.
Disable ESYNC to avoid crashing every 5 to 15 minutes
Enable D9VK for even better performance. Disable ESYNC for stability. Try using gamemode if you have it installed. "-nostartupmovies" to skip the intro cutscenes.
My commands list : PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 gamemoderun %command% -nostartupmovies
You'll need to use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 if your PC doesn't support Vulkan, otherwise it's just out of the box.
Works great but watch out with your controller's vibrations settings.
Artifacts only present in the cut-scenes during Career Mode (in the pits and data center).
Vibrations with a Xbox One Controller makes the game crash when pausing during a race. Also, the vibrations are constant and thus do not correspond to what you see on the screen. DISABLE THEM.
Won't run under Proton but runs under Wine
I think it has something to do with CEF. Works wonderfully under Wine 6.0 (Lutris). Tried Proton 5.0-10, 5.13-6 and Proton GE 5.21, 6.0 and 6.1
Works fine in both solo and multiplayer modes
Videos play but with a placeholder picture
Disable logging (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1941669393) and disable motion-blur (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1936395067)
On the first run, performance was unpleasant (17ish FPS), on the second run it ran way better (high 30s) with all settings on Epic except Anti-Aliasing.
Had a crash once when I reloaded a checkpoint, don't know if it was a bug in Wine or in the game itself
The teaser is badly optimized, remember to tweak the ini files for a better (yet not the best) experience.
Nice out of the box experience but not a perfect one
Visual artifacts when inside buildings (due to lightning probably).
Keyboard and Controller input can sometimes overlap each other. When you navigate the phone, you have to move one of your stick in order to not close the phone while navigating.
The game lags a bit for me while driving, even with lower draw distance.
Adding extra launch commands are required for the game to run with more than 512MB of VRAM: "-nomemrestrict -norestrictions -percentvidmem 100 -availablevidmem 4096 -noprecache -novblank" where 4096 is your amount of VRAM (I have 4GB).
Plays out of the box
You'll have the same problems as on Windows related to performance on old hardware such as my graphics card. Otherwise it just works.
Out of the box experience. Controller support is perfect. Maxed out settings 1080p.
Works like a charm with a controller, solid experience and framerate with High settings
Tried some online FOB events, no problem at all
Perfect out-of-the-box
Plug your controller and enjoy
Near-native experience
The game itself has some flaws. Feel free to check the PCGaming wiki page of this game to know more.
Other than that, I was able to play with my Xbox One and PS3 controllers without any problems.
Finally works since Proton 5.0
Both the base game and the "sdkbeta" version work.
Out-of-the-box experience
Played with Proton 7.0-4, no problem whatsoever on my system
Works really well out-of-the-box
Proton-GE with AMD FSR was tested and it is as smooth as Proton 6.3-8.
Works almost perfectly
The intro video won't play but doesn't make the game crash. You can skip it by pressing ESC or just wait till it ends.
Works through Proton but native is preferred and has fewer problems
Mouse not detected for scrolling with edges. Can't click and drag through the tech tree.
If you are into achievements (like I am), the my2K account connection doesn't work on native but works through Proton. This is indeed required to complete Sid Meier's Starships but I digress :-)
Rename two files and then it's a perfect experience
Rename/delete Starships64.exe and rename Starships.exe to Starships64.exe
If you don't, the game will crash during the video introduction.
Would be perfect if cutscenes were not so sketchy in the third game
Cutscenes of the third game works up to World 3, then it fails to render. Also cutscenes play in English by default (the first audio track) with Proton 7.0-2. With GE-Proton, it plays in a random audio track.
Vanilla Proton for the first and second game. GE-Proton for the third. Otherwise, solid experience with a Xbox Controller and maxed out settings + 60 fps.
Works out of the box and better than native
Native version saves and Windows saves are not compatible
Stuttering in cutscenes due to shaders compiling
Controller support is excellent. Graphics are better than native and performance too.
Perfect experience
Alt-tabbing the game can crash it, just avoid doing that and that's fine.
