It doesn't work if you linked your Xbox account
Standard proton doesn't even start. Bleeding edge beta of proton experimental manages to start it.
But if you have linked your Xbox account to the game in the past a login prompt will appear that doesn't render properly in proton. I don't know about desktop Linux but in Steam Deck's gaming mode this login prompt can't be closed so there's no chance at playing the game
DirectX error if you don't use PROTON_USE_WINE3D3
Disable steam overlay
Freeze if steam overlay not disabled
Once you're using GloriousEggRoll and lower the graphic settings it should run okay. It won't be the same as Windows but good enough ^^
Launcher only works with mouse, but it's not that much of a hassle using the Touch Screen
With Deck's HW it should go faster. Set graphic settings to low and you'll get 20-30 fps at max resolution (next I'll try lowerng resolution)
Official Proton can't play videos. Use GloriousEggRoll one
Works fine, it's a beta game so unstability is understandable
Using Vulkan you may run out of VRam and experience an striped pattern on the screen. Restarting the game fixes it. It may happen on Windows too, I don't know
Setting borderless window with a resolution different than your desktop's one makes the menus hard to navigate since it doesn't properly calcualte mouse coordinates. Restarting the game fixes it
Expcted from a Beta game, sometimes it complains about a corrupted file, no real way to fix it but trying until it stops complaining
It's said that using Proton-GE and DX11 instead of Vulkan may alliviate issues. Haven'tr tried myself.
Lighting is broken and it affects the text reading
Lightning is broken
The Menu didn't even appear until I pressed B (possibly a video playing?) And when it appeared it's appearance was broken (Lightning problems again?
Game is sadly unplayable for me right now. Proton 8, 7 and GE didn't work. Using WINE3D3 didn't work
Works fine on PC
Lot of stuttering at some places. Still playable
Works Flawlessly
Sometimes when changing resolution it may end up off-centered
-vulkan
Slight bug where the quick chat radial menú doesn't work properly since the mouse doesn't get centered immediately when pressing X or Z
Importing sprays does simply not work on Linux. My recommendation is forcing the Proton version, importing all the sprites you want there and then switching back to Linux version (VAC prevents you from using Proton version to play). Back on Linux your sprites will be there
Only native Linux version is compatible. Trying Proton will get you kicked by VAC (it won't ban you don't worry)
It has a few problems which makes it technically inferior compared to the Windows version but it's perfectly enjoyable
40Hz
Not hard with the touch screen. Can be disabled after first launch
The default resolution is a bit too low and text may get blurry. Everything perfect if you up it a bit
Removing proton files removes saved games
There is a lot to unpack here so I'll try to be clear.
This game has a native Linux port, however, Steam Deck uses the Windows version through Proton by default. I think Valve has done this because the Linux version has a mouse-only launcher, while the windows version doesn't. Fear not, the launcher can be disabled after first launch.
Windows through Proton (default config) has several problems. Including:
- Frequent freezing near cutscenes (after or before them)
- Text is blurrier than on Linux version
- Some graphical effects are broken. Specifically, the water fountain at the high school entrance starts flashing lights like crazy playing the Windows version. Water is displayed properly on the Linux port.
So we need to force Steam to use the Linux version. The easiest way to do this is to Force the use of an specific compatibility tool -> Steam Linux Runtime
. The game launcher will complain about both the Linux distro and the graphic card not being compatible. Ignore both warnings, check don't show again
on the bottom-left and press Play
.
From now on, starting the game from steam will jump straight into it, with no launcher on your way and no more tinkering required. Enjoy the game!
Using DorHud mod
If you like dorhud I recommend you to use it, since it adds native controller support. That's the "tinker" thing I've done
Works Flawlessly with Vulkan renderer
I changed to Vulkan renderer because I tend to prefer Vulkan, I didn't even try DX
Use the proton version. By default it tries to use the Linux version and it just doesn't work
Set your FPS to unlimited (it won't get above 60fps anyway), it seems the game mechanics are tied to framerate (as usual in Game Maker games). So if you're using the fps limiter the game just goes slow
I have also tried the Steam Linux runtimes without any success.
Works well except the LiS 2 integration
If for whatever reason the controller gets disconnected it won't work again until you restart the game. A shame if playing in Docked mode
A big part of this game is that the save game will get carried to Life is Strange 2
This won't work because Proton makes different filesystems for each game (called prefixes). So each games thinks they're the only game in the windows installation.
So when Life is Strange 2 looks for captain spirit savegame it just won't find it. You can go ahead without it (I don't think it really matters that much) or you have to manually copy the file from one prefix to the other
Just copy the folder <Steam-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/845070/pfx/users/steamuser/appdata/local/Dontnod/<user-id>/CaptainSpirit
to <Steam-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/532210/pfx/users/steamuser/appdata/local/Dontnod/<user-id>/CaptainSpirit
The game should now detect the game properly
Intro video doesn't play in full screen but smaller (it's just the devs logo, nothing relevant for Lore or gameplay)
Great game for playing on the deck. It fits perfectly. The game has an automatic graphics setter in the graphics menu which would set the deck perfectly for 60fps
Out of the box experience.
40Hz
The usual shader shenanigans when you start playing. It dissapears after the first couple of minutes of your first play
Biggest hassle the controller config, expected for a RTS game and nothing to do with Proton. It's still very playable and the only RTS game I probably would be playing on my deck.
OOTB experience
40hz
Game runs exactly as it does in Windows. Even while it doesn't have native controller support, mouse and keyboard emulation through Steam Input makes the game perfectly playable with the Deck
Perfect experience
40HZ-40fps
Long queue times for teens are normal at the time of this writing. Nothing to do with Proton
I think graphics are set to ultra by default. Lower them to "Medium" or worse if you want decent fps (30-40)
Frozen on Warning screen
I've also tried Proton GE apart of the official one
I've tried a bunch of things. I don't remember having problems on Steam Deck in the past but now that I'm playing on PC I haven't been able to make it work. Well actually I made it work exactly once, no more
I've tried with official and Proton-GE. I've tried to remove the config information. I've tried removing the shader cache. I've tried letting Steam process the shaders. I've tried not letting Steam process the shaders. I've tried with gamemoderun. I've tried disabling Steam UI in game. I've tried disabling MangoHud. I've tried with SteamDeck=1. I'm sincerely out of ideas while on Steam Deck it has always been plug and play
Unfortunately I'm gonna have to resort to Windows to play this game
MANGOHUD=0 gamescope -f -W 1920 -H 1200 -w 1920 -h 1200 -r 165 --mangoapp --adaptive-sync -- %command%
Using Vulkan there are some artifacts. Didn't test with directX
Fixable by selecting "borderless" on the in-game settings
After trying like literally anything. (Proton-GE, gamemode, steam interface disabling, clean instalation, etc) I started wondering. Why does it work out of the box on Deck but not on my setup when they're almost similar? Then I realized one crucial difference, gamescope.
Launching with gamescope fixed it instantly.
The arguments I've provided are for my computer, you may want to tweak them, check this for reference: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamescope
