Completamente sem som.
Com exceçao da mudança de versao do proton, nao ha nada que se possa fazer para consertar o problema do audio.

Works right out the box with Proton Version 9 with minor audio glitches that don't take away from the gameplay.
Minor sound effects (I.E. building confirmation sound) being glitched/broken

On proton 9 sound okay but graphical glitches, on 5.13 graphics perfet, game stable but no sound at all.
Game works, but on newer Protons (8/9) annoying glitches with blinking textures, on 5.13 no sound but totaly playable and graphics 100 % okay.

It works fine unless you want to play learning campaign.
Trying to launch learning campaign causes freezing.

The "Learn to Play" caused a game crash, but all subsequent play went totally fine.
This game ran OoTB. The ONLY tinkering I did was forcing proton experimental. I do this with all of my games and have never had issues.
No sound at all
I've tried many recommended "tricks" presented here, none of them ever worked. The game works fine under Windows, but not under Linux with Proton emulation.

It really is not too hard to get to work. Use Proton 5.0-x to run protontricks 287450 directmusic
in the wineprefix. Afterwards I switched to Experimental and got less Audio Lag. The fix WILL NOT WORK if you try to apply it on Experimental first.
Protontricks fixes it.
Not without the Audio being fixed.

Directplay and direct music with the steps described below by other users and then switch to experimental. If the steps are donde incorrectly scenarios might crash. Tutorial and skill test (after firsttry) modes don't load at all and freeze the game.
Custom layout. Right trackpad as Mouse Region (all the screen) and left trackpad as Mouse Region (building menu). Gyro for extra accuracy.
At launch.
Is needed to change resolution in settings menu.
Some game modes don't work and some scenarios might rarely not load scripts.

Most of the game works well but being unable to play with more computer players is likely to be disappointing.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
When music is enabled multiple tracks will play simultaneously (I think the menu music fails to stop on game start).
Launch menu displays in the wrong order (so the buttons are behind the background)
Quick start mode works no issues with one computer player but always crashes immediately for 6 computer players (one human player in both cases).

works fine out of the box
tutorial doesnt work. stuck at loading screen
tutorial loading screen never finishes otherwise running without problems

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Fails to start and crashes on occasion
Used Tasman's recommended launch options. Tutorials dont work but Normal Campaigns do. Random crash and start fails.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Sometimes disconnected with my friend who played on Windows, but I think it was because of the poor LAN network over Wi-Fi 2.4Ghz
just add the mentioned launch options.

gamemoderun %command%
cursor remains the system cursor (I mean, the looks of the cursor), this make it hard to know when you're attacking units (cursor not chaning to sword for example, it's just my Bibata-modern-classic styled cursor that is visible)
It just works, really easy setup

tutorial doesnt work. stuck at loading screen
starts out the box but no control over sound
tutorial doesnt work but campaign and solo skirmish fine
with proton8 starts but no sound
with ge-proton8-9 starts but buggy audio

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%
Namoria's explanation (in short protontricks 287450 directmusic protontricks 287450 directplay)
It only crackles on the startup, didn't catch anything odd during games
Went to the 8.0-2 since the Experimental only gets me up to the main menu (can't start the campaign nor skirmish)
At first, the sound was missing; then, pops and cracks.
Fixes
No sound
- First, make sure winetricks is up to date:
# winetricks --self-update
- Then, proceed:
$ protontricks 287450 directmusic
$ protontricks 287450 directplay
$ protontricks 287450 sound=alsa
Look out for errors to make sure that each protontricks command actually worked.
- (optional) If protontricks does not work, try
$ chmod 700 ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/287450/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows/syswow64/*
and then do the protontricks commands again.
- (optional) In some cases, you also might want to try this:
$ ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/"Proton 7.0"/dist/bin/wine64 regsvr32 quartz.dll
Maybe you have to change "Proton 7.0" with the newest Proton available in the commons-directory. I got this fix from this tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMQqIN0ns_c
Crackling or popping sound (recommended to anyone)
- Unfortunately, the music files for Rise of Nations are of low quality – even in the case of the Extended Edition. You probably want to overwrite the music in
".steam/steam/steamapps/common/Rise of Nations/sounds/tracks/"
. I highly recommend this to anybody anyway. - Try the HD Music Mod by Jofoyo, provided here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/287450/discussions/0/1640915206463505978/. It will improve the sound quality drastically. Alternatively, you can look up "Rise Of Nations (Re-Engineered Soundtrack)" or just any improved audio files for the music of the game.
- If you use PipeWire (or PulseAudio?), there might still be some latency in the game, e.g. when you click on a building it will take a few milliseconds longer for the game to play the specific sound. If that bothers you, try this Steam Launch Option for Rise of Nations:
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=118 %command%
I am not sure about the number, so you might want to tinker around a bit.
Rise of Nations does not start
- Unstinstall Rise of Nations.
- Force the use of
Proton 5.0-1
as specific Steam Play compatibility tool for Rise of Nations. - Install Rise of Nations.
- Try to start the game. It will probably fail, but that’s fine. Be prepared to see the message Preparing to launch Rise of Nations: Extended Edition for a few minutes. Then, when the Rise of Nations launcher shows on the screen, click on Play.
- Apply the no sound fix with protontricks (see above) if needed.
- Change to
Proton Experimental
(or any other newer version of Proton?) and play the game.
Yes, I played this just as I have done on windows for years. Just need to add directmusic and gold.
protontricks 287450 directmusic protontricks 287450 directplay
At first all Steam cloud saves would not sync. Be patient....keep clicking that dang button until it knows who is boss. After a while, all my saves on Windows were uploaded and I was able to load successfully in linux (Pop OS)
It took me a little while to figure this out. My suggestion is to keep in mind if you really want to play this game, understand protontricks and how Steam works on linux. Once you got those down, you will be fine. Use youtube to understand protontricks, great resources.
Game as such works!
Audio (sound) does not work!
- Solutions: Install Proton 4.11-13 version via Steam Tools Install protontricks via your package manager (APT, Zypper, DNF, Pacman, ...); alternatively install protontricks from source, instructions here: https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks Type into terminal (command line): protontricks 287450 directmusic (protontricks sometimes will not automatically create a symlink [command not found], so /path/to/protontricks 287450 directmusic may be more applicable) Audio works like a charm after protontricks

I wonder what has to be done in order to play the game without any hassles on the latest Proton/Wine versions . . .
Audio pops and cracks at launch, works without issues afterwards
The default resolution is 4:3 ratio instead widescreen, setting manual the resolution resolves this
As other said use proton tricks for direct play and direct music. But there is a order. By default proton tricks use current version of wine that set in your game compatibility to do the install. But it won't work for 5.10. You will get error like "echo app data folder and get fsync is running".
You can't install on 7.04 or above because in 5.10 it has full copy of the directx file but in 7.04 it switch to symbol link where proton tricks won't have write permission.
If you switch proton version and run the game. It will replace the files in the compdata folder.
So here is the order. First set to 5.10, run game once so compdata have 5.10 files. Then switch to proton 7 in settings but don't run the game. Run proton tricks to insert direct play and music. ( it will use wine 7 to do this). After that done, run the game. At this point steam will try to replace file to 7.04. But it will leave the file you installed alone so it is no longer the symbol link version.
See proton trick comment
Switch proton version to 5.0-10 to run protontricks 287450 directmusic; protontricks 287450 directplay; as these won't complete correctly in the latest proton. Once the protontricks commands have finished, you can switch back to latest experimental.
Fixable via protontricks
used protontricks directmusic as listed in other reports to fix the no-audio issue
Was able to fix this with the protontricks directmusic fix described in other reports.
Provided you're comfortable using Protontricks, it runs beautifully.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Won't run trough steam. DirecX error
$ protontricks 287450 sound=alsa $ protontricks 287450 directmusic $ protontricks 287450 directplay
Coudn't get it to work trough steam, launches the first little menu, but when I click play it gives me "Could not initialize DirectX..." error. Ran "riseofnations.exe" from in to the game directory it launched withouth audio and multiplayer.
protontricks 287450 directmusic protontricks 287450 directplay
Some pretty small text on the Deck's built-in screen at default resolution
Audio didn't work until running the Protontricks commands. Still had some crackling after audio started working, but nothing game-breaking
To fix audio: protontricks 287450 directmusic protontricks 287450 directplay If you get "permission denied" error, go to the directory and give the files read-write permissions
Able to play online with a Windows user
How to fix broken audio:
Downgraded to Proton 4.11-13
protontricks 287450 directmusic
install protontricks instructions here: https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks
(protontricks sometimes will not automatically create a symlink [command not found], so /path/to/protontricks 287450 directmusic may be more applicable)
Audio works like a charm after protontricks
Alt+Tab will sometimes crash the game.

Start the game once. The run this command to install the missing DirectX:
protontricks 287450 directmusic
Starting the game again and it works.
The tutorial does not work. Other contributors describe that switching to a previous version of the game fixes this.
I intentionally used proton 5.0-10
Protonics solution worked for me, I was getting permission denied error messages when enabling directplay and directmusic so I added user write permissions on the files that were failing.

to get the sound working i needed to switch to proton 4.11-13 and then run:
protontricks 287450 directmusic
After installing i switched back to proton 6.3.7 and everything works including sound.

No sound, even with prototricks customizations
Cannot play fullscreen when I accept invitation
I used the directions provided at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMQqIN0ns_c to enable protontricks and setup directmusic and directplay. I did not get the DLL error he described, however, and the game worked beautifully with sound afterward.
Using protontricks resolved the problem.
Online multiplayer is broken. Only one Proton player per lobby works. No problems with two Windows players and one linux player though.
No audio, even after applying the protontrick
Could not switch away from fullscreen, might be related to i3

Game started up and ran great except for no sound. This is better than before since I had issues starting up the game before!
I had no audio
Works OOTB with proton
After installing the game runs significantly better than with proton 4.11
But there was no sound and when trying to do: protontricks 287450 directmusic i would get an error of permisions on some files:
"c:/windows/syswow64/dmband.dll: Permission denied"
changing the permisions wouldnt make any difference.
I decided to go back to proton 5.0, do the protontricks command, and then go back to the current proton.
I now have sound and the game runs perfectly quite better than with older proton versions, no graphic glitches like before.
before the customizations i would have no audio
I did not test multiplayer, local or online
