The game freezes when I try to pick up Greek Fir Jars from the crate. (Easily fixable, see my comment below)
The game runs out of the box, but I experienced a game-breaking bug: The game freezes when I try to pick up the Greek Fire Jars from the crate. Disabling XIM (X Input Methods) by adding "PROTON_NO_XIM=1 %command%" to the Launch Options for Expeditions: Rome in Steam fixed this. (My libx11 version is newer than 1.7.)
Overall, the game runs great; and, if you happen to experience this bug, it is easy enough to fix.

On Linux, I played Humankind, as of now, for over 60 hours. The multiplayer experience was enjoyable and there were no issues whatsoever (I played online with friends who are using Windows).
Runs out of the box
On Linux, I played this game for about 15 hours and I experienced no issues whatsoever. It runs perfectly out of the box.
At first, the sound was missing; then, pops and cracks.
Fixes
No sound
- First, make sure winetricks is up to date:
# winetricks --self-update
- Then, proceed:
$ protontricks 287450 directmusic
$ protontricks 287450 directplay
$ protontricks 287450 sound=alsa
Look out for errors to make sure that each protontricks command actually worked.
- (optional) If protontricks does not work, try
$ chmod 700 ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/287450/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows/syswow64/*
and then do the protontricks commands again.
- (optional) In some cases, you also might want to try this:
$ ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/"Proton 7.0"/dist/bin/wine64 regsvr32 quartz.dll
Maybe you have to change "Proton 7.0" with the newest Proton available in the commons-directory. I got this fix from this tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMQqIN0ns_c
Crackling or popping sound (recommended to anyone)
- Unfortunately, the music files for Rise of Nations are of low quality – even in the case of the Extended Edition. You probably want to overwrite the music in
".steam/steam/steamapps/common/Rise of Nations/sounds/tracks/"
. I highly recommend this to anybody anyway. - Try the HD Music Mod by Jofoyo, provided here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/287450/discussions/0/1640915206463505978/. It will improve the sound quality drastically. Alternatively, you can look up "Rise Of Nations (Re-Engineered Soundtrack)" or just any improved audio files for the music of the game.
- If you use PipeWire (or PulseAudio?), there might still be some latency in the game, e.g. when you click on a building it will take a few milliseconds longer for the game to play the specific sound. If that bothers you, try this Steam Launch Option for Rise of Nations:
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=118 %command%
I am not sure about the number, so you might want to tinker around a bit.
Rise of Nations does not start
- Unstinstall Rise of Nations.
- Force the use of
Proton 5.0-1
as specific Steam Play compatibility tool for Rise of Nations. - Install Rise of Nations.
- Try to start the game. It will probably fail, but that’s fine. Be prepared to see the message Preparing to launch Rise of Nations: Extended Edition for a few minutes. Then, when the Rise of Nations launcher shows on the screen, click on Play.
- Apply the no sound fix with protontricks (see above) if needed.
- Change to
Proton Experimental
(or any other newer version of Proton?) and play the game.
The GOG version runs perfectly with system wine-staging; zero issues. Lutris won’t work for some reason, even though I tinkered.
This is fixable.
Problem
- Crashes while loading a savegame or shortly after
Solution
This can be fixed by using the workaround explained here: https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/2092#issuecomment-2523442025 Read the comments above and below, too.
In a nutshell, you have to download two *.dll files (d3d12.dll and d3d12core.dll) and use them to replace the original *.dll files in a specific Steam directory. After doing so, Outlaws works like a charm.
Note that you need to download "vkd3d-proton-merge-59224fd7ac0afe1caace63abf035c5fc47340188.zip" from here: https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/actions/runs/12201080683
The download icon will only appear, if you sign in with a Github account.
If you’re using the Flatpak version of Steam, copy the two dll files into this directory: ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton - Experimental/files/lib64/wine/vkd3d-proton.
Thanks to HansKristian-Work for providing this solution!
With the latest update, Star Wars Outlaws now works perfectly out of the box. The previous workaround I posted is no longer needed.
The Outer Worlds runs perfectly fine
I played The Outer Worlds for over 40 hours on Linux and experienced zero issues. No tinkering, everything worked out of the box. I can recommend this game for Linux gamers.
Trials of Fire runs perfectly.
For me, Trials of Fire runs perfectly out of the box. I played the game for over 30 hours so far and had zero issues.
Runs smoothly with lutris-6.21-3-x86_64 and Esync disabled. This fixes the black screen issue after selecting game difficulty.
Disabling Esync in Lutris fixed black screen during game intro (the intro played after game difficulty selection)
