Runs great. Just the unskippable launcher is a little annoying.
There is an unskippable launcher. But you can use the touchscreen to launch the game. If you go into the video options you need to close the new window via the steam menu. Hit the steam button and look at the bottom. There should be two windows in the game menu on the bottom. Select the video options window and hit the X button to close it. That saves your video settings and you can start the game.
Played with Proton 8.0-2
The game runs absolutely fine and is very enjoyable.
During transistional areas between levels (used for loading the next level), the game can stutter heavily. This happens on Windows too but is much more noticeable when played with proton. Since nothing happens in these areas you just have to wait it out.
gamemoderun %command% --intro-skip -skipStartScreen --launcher-skip
great game running great!
As mentioned before, after installing you have to change up the launcher and exe to get it launching. Game itself runs flawlessly for me. go into the installation folder with terminal and execute:
mv ./bin ./bin.bak && ln -s DefEd/bin bin && cd bin && mv ./SupportTool.exe ./SupportTool.bak && ln -s EoCApp.exe SupportTool.exe
Enjoyable but I had occasional performance problems
Sometimes heavy stuttering kicked in for no apparent reason. Interacting with the mirror made the framerate much worse. Only restarting the game reset the performance back to an enjoyable level.
You have to hit the ESC-Key for the game to actually start and get you to the start menu.
SteamDeck=0 %command%
The screen is flickering until you enable FSR3 in the graphics settings.
TLDR:
- Set the SteamDeck=0 %command% as launch option
- Enable FSR3 Frame Generation in graphics settings to remove screen flickering
- Enable fullscreen mode if you experience artifacts around edges when moving the camera
You NEED to set the launch option SteamDeck=0 or else you will run the game in SteamDeck mode by default which results in lower graphics and broken cloth and hair physics.
This is because if not the game will run in SteamDeck DX11 mode by default. With SteamDeck=0 it uses DX12 and the graphics settings actually do something quality wise. For whatever reason Square Enix has introduced this variable that makes Forspoken run in SteamDeck mode by default when run via Proton. I also experienced 3 random crashes in 2 hours of gameplay with DX11. I still have to see if DX12 has the same problem.
The screen was flickering when run with SteamDeck=0 on first boot but enabling FSR3 Frame Generation completely removes this issue.
I also experienced weird artifacting on geometry edges when moving the camera around. Setting the game window from Borderless to Fullscreen removed this issue.
Applied mfplat fix as mentioned in previous reports, then played from start to finish without any problems. https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install
plays great
There are some minor artifacting problems in the underwater levels in year 4. but worked great from start to finish.
Proton 7.0-4 and Proton Experimental crash after first logo is shown (my guess is probably because of unsupported video codec for the video starting right after). GE-Proton plays great!
As other reports noted you may have to delete your wine prefix folder for the game, if you started it with nonworking proton version before. But I am not sure if you have to.
the folder is: /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/214510
The game runs perfectly on Linux and Steam Deck via Proton. Unfortunately the PC port is not in good shape and most bugs happening on Windows will happen on Linux, too.
Luckily frequent game crashing that is reported in Steam forums does not happen with Proton. It did only happened once to me in a playthorugh (see notes below).
Some tips (due to bugs happening on the PC version):
- When playing with headphones turn down the sound effects volume. Else you will hear crackling audio effects when fighting. They are wierdly overamplified by default. On Speakers you will probably not notice it.
- When beating a boss don't skip the leaderboard animation. The game can freeze when skipped and you have to do the boss fight again.
- Some achievements will not unlock, because they are not programmed correctly.
voice chat works in mission but not in lobby
voice chat does not work in lobby. but voice chat works in the mission.
I finished both campaigns without a single crash after the initial setup!
I was playing on recommended graphics settings and framerate was pretty jumpy ranging from (perceived) 60 fps to 30 fps. But overall a very pleasant and playable experience. Then again my machine is pretty mid-range nowadays.
Controller worked, Graphics worked, Audio worked, Everything worked like a native experience!
I had to apply the already mentioned tweaks (drop .dlls from DXVK 0.96, mfplat.dll into the main folder and install the needed winetricks)
Guide video here: https://youtu.be/pcCJSm3IoMY mfplat.dll from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamPlay/comments/amde9g/resident_evil_2_is_finishable_in_linux/efmu1il
And after that 10 minute setup I was playing RE2 a week after launch from beginning to end on linux. Amazing. Thanks to everybody related to the Proton project!
Game played to about 80% completion. No issues at all. Runs as expected. Controller works as expected.
Two small annoyances:
- has a launcher that starts every time and minimizes BigPicture-Mode
- When controller disconnects you have to restart the game to get the controller input working again
Plays from start to finish without problems
Occasionally after loading a game or continuing from a save, the game and/or menu is very slow and choppy. This can be fixed by reloading the save or restarting the game.
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Plays perfectly fine with Proton 5.0.7 but has really slow loading times. Using GloriousEggroll Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF fixes that!
The tutorial videos are replaced by placeholder videos therefor not watchable. But the explanation text is enough. It's Tetris after all ;)
The initial three level transitions are very choppy. (Probably due to shader compilation, because there often is a significant change in effects during the transisitions). smooth sailing afterwards.
Played in BigPictureMode with PS4 Controller and from start to finish with no problems at all.
