Apart from rare lags, it works well out of the box.
- switched to Proton 5.13-6
- set the color depth to 32-bit in the game's settings
- edited DeusEx.ini file for higher resolution
Cutscenes and music are missing. Higher resolutions cause the game to not start (it gets stuck trying to enter fullscreen). I had to combine fixes from a few different reports to get the fully playable experience:
- set your language in Gothic's Steam properties
- after fresh install run
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/65540/pfx/ winetricks directmusicin the terminal to fix missing music - edit zVidResFullscreenX and zVidResFullscreenY keys in system/Gothic.ini file to get a higher resolution
- optionally install dgvoodo2 and set launch options to
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8,d3d9,d3dimm,ddraw=n" %command%, if you really want the ingame cutscenes
Music is missing without the use of directmusic.
No ingame cutscenes.
Can't Alt-Tab out of the game.
Suprisingly smooth experience
The last mission is still bugged (it's impossible to climb the helicopter), but the same thing happens on Windows. It's incredible Rockstar haven't patched it to this day. Just set launch parameters DXVK_FRAME_RATE=30 %command% to reduce the framerate for the duration of this mission.
PC port of GTA 4 never had a good reputation when it comes to bugs and stability, but to my surprise I finished the whole story without much issue.
The musical video gets skipped. Apart from that it works well out of the box.
The game sometimes freezes during intro sequence when starting with FoC expansion. That's why I played with maximized window instead of fullscreen, because otherwise I wasn't able to alt+tab or close the game after such freeze.
Multiplayer can be rather unstable sometimes. Frequent crashes on some specific maps, especially land battles and with specific units (empreror and his lighting attack tends to occasionally crash the whole game). Difficult to play a full large-scale 1v1 galactic conquest, but smaller ones as well as skirmishes work quite well. Most of these problems are present on Windows too though.
Many of the issues I faced are also present on Windows, so the experience isn't much different.
Can lag a bit with larger battles or with certain visual effects.
I experienced very frequent crashes with native version, but with older proton it works very well. With newer versions of proton though, I wasn't able to even launch the game.
