For those who the game doesn't even start because EA Launcher crashes right upon install, this is for you
First, remove the game's wine prefix folder (which apparently deletes your save games, so back that up first if you care):
/home/USER/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1238840
Then, use the bleeding-edge version of Proton Experimental. The stupid EA App will work and you'll be able to play the game, it's flawless beyond this point, I imagine the same will have to be done to other EA App required games. Have fun!
Fonts to install: corefonts, lucida, tahoma.
Native is basically unfinished/broken, I was able to play with graphical bugs and slow performace, I just kept playing up until Surface Tension, specifically at the mortar bit where the Native version crashes the game. This is where I just tried Proton, regular game version (no public-beta), works flawlessly, better performance and no bugs.
Some ingame fonts look wrong, can be fixed by Protontricks and installing the fonts mentioned in this report.
Works OOTB. no microstutter or unresponsiveness from using the Volume buttons that other reports mention, so those issues must've been fixed
TDP @ 6W; when docked to a 1080p display, I have to remove the TDP limit.
possibly the biggest issue was typing your new character name at the very beginning, it was a little clunky but manageable. Otherwise, it's flawless.
One of the greatest games of all time. Check the guide linked below to get the best experience.
Used protontricks for D3D10 renderer
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2967089130 Followed this guide to install a couple non-invasive mods to get this 24 year old gem back to snuff, you'd need to do the same thing on Windows; there are no Linux specific issues.
TDP @ 4W
This game is obviously delisted and everyone will likely just go play the remake, but for what it's worth it is playable on Steam Deck, just that since the game was made with M&K in mind, controller support is non existent. Nothing a community layout can't fix.
Works well, with some issue that can be fixed in the game's .ini files or just use the mod below. the issues are also on Windows.
Used a mod that will do the configs for you.
Font scaling issues if you set resolution higher than 1080p.
Use this mod to fix font scaling on high resolutions, unlcok the fps, change FOV and more. The mod works through Wine with no problems so no need to use protontricks or whatever. If you can't point the mod to the game's save location, just make a symlink of EA Games
folder that is in /home/USER/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/17410/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/
to your actual Documents folder, then the mod will automatically detect the save file.
gamemoderun %command%
Used to cause crashes and other issues with older game versions and Proton versions, on Proton 9, and after several game updates with bug fixes, it works pretty well.
TDP 9W
The game might freeze if your system's uptime is too long (if you haven't restarted your deck in a while and instead use Sleep). To fix simply Restart the Deck.
in addition to what is said in the other reports, its a flawless experience unless you almost exclusively use Sleep and never shut your deck down.
fluidsynth -is -a pulseaudio ~/Music/WeedsGM4.sf2 & %command% ; killall -9 fluidsynth
TDP can go down as low as 6W
follow the instructions by user Xanarkan, in addition to his steps, double check that the .sf2 file you download and move to your Music directory has the same filename as written in the launch command (so change it to: WeedsGM4.sf2), as when I downloaded it it was a different name
Brilliant game after tweaking. no music audio unless you do steps mentioned by user Xanarkan (also check my notes on audio in this report). also used a few mods mentioned by user TheGameSquid over on the PC tab of this ProtonDB page; from those, mouse fix and BetterLogs mod are highly recommended.
No launch options, no specific Proton version (valve picks Experimental by default for this one). Just hit Play.
I'm not having any of the issues that users have reported below, it could be they have been fixed.
