inside the game folder is a setup tool where there are more options available than in-game , to access it open the game directory and open the setup tool via protontricks:
protontricks -c 'wine SmershSetup.exe' 9800
if it doesn't open, install mfc42 through protontricks:
protontricks --gui
click on death to spies, select the default wine prefix, install a windows dll or component, scroll down until you see mfc42, tick it and press okay. go through the installation and press cancel once you're done. repeat the steps above.

no lag, no stutters, nothing. never dips below 75 fps (my refresh rate).
gamemoderun %command%
played the game through beggining to the end with only 1 crash, rather surprising considering the next 2 titles are pretty much completely borked under proton.

multiple major softlocks caused by wine, makes the game basically unplayable unless you download a bunch of saves online and just swap to those when the softlocks happen, not a good game experience either way.

start of the game is bugged, even if you manage to get past it by downloading save off the internet the first puzzle is uncompletable because of some wine shenanigans. borked.
proton > native
native linux version exhibits a bug where dragging your mouse slows down the game to a crawl, fixable with a workshop mod.
performance is about the same on dxvk than native opengl, proton version doesn't exhibit the mouse bug.

vsync is forced without an in-game setting to disable it, since this is a platformer that requires a lot of timing and precision disabling it might remove some of that input lag it introduces, if you find yourself getting screen tearing, turn it back on.
go to the game directory, open local.cfg and edit the vsync line to say
<vsync>0</vsync>

install the game, run it once, quit out of it and steam.
get tfix from here and install it via protontricks:
protontricks -c "wine ./TFix_1.27.28.exe" 211600
when asked for game path paste this in (replace $USER with yours)
z:\home\$USER\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\thief_gold\
open the game, go to settings and open the audio tab, set hardware acceleration to openAL and EAX setting to ON, next go to customize controls and load one of the preset (i recommend tfix default)
you can enable hrtf by downloading this and copying the files over to your game directory.
if you don't see openal under the hardware acceleration options, open the protontricks gui, select thief, select the default prefix, install a windows dll or component and install openal. relaunch the game and the option should now be there.
hrtf can cause crackling, delete the downloaded files if it does, your mileage may vary.
if the videos in the game don't play, open protontricks, click on thief gold, select the default prefix, install a windows dll or component and install icodecs. relaunch the game and the videos now work.
