The game just works. Install and launch without any issues!
Slow considering my hardware, but still very playable.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, but no matter which option you choose, the game will only output sound in stereo. No way to have 5.1 audio. Doesn't matter much with this type of game, but this problem happens way too often on Linux.
Added PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 in the game's command for it to start. I don't know how slow it is or how badly optimised it is for multicore CPUs, but in big cities FPS can drop to less than 40, especially in cutscenes. This in clearly CPU bottleneck as graphic settings or definition changes won't make any difference and the fans of my GPU won't even start. Still playable though considering the type of game it is.
One back to desktop crash in 22 hours of gameplay, so no big deal.
The screen remains black no matter what.
I stopped playing it for a few weeks. I didn't uninstall it nor modified anything. But when I tried to play it again a few days ago, the screen remained black. The game starts, the audio works, and I can see the cursor but nothing else.
Follow Hauser's tutorial to have it working.
Overall, the game plays very well! Even though Ubi Connect, like every launcher, can be a problem.
Ubi Connect did install and update correctly for me with the last Proton, but do remember to disable the 2 way authentication or it's never gonna accept you password for some reason. It also asked for my password everytime I launched the game since the last Ubi Connect update for some reason, but no big deal. I also had to install xact via protontricks to have 5.1 audio.
Sometimes the menus can stutter a lot for some reason. FPS were also quite low, but I was above 60 so it was no big deal.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
Use protontricks xact to not only fix some audio issues, but also enable 5.1 audio.
2 crashes on my whole playthrough. No big deal at all.
The game doesn't keep your language settings between sessions.
Renaming "BorderlandsGOTY.exe" to "Launcher.exe".
It's one of those games that outputs only Stereo audio on Linux. I suspect a bug in Wine : https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48106
The game seems to run very well. But this audio bug kills any interest in playing it. It's unfortunately a longstanding bug that no one seems to care about and that might last. To me gaming on Linux won't be ready until someone begins to care about audio...
As stated below, you have to rename the launcher.
A recent update solved the surround issues. The game is now perfectly playable.
Works flawlessly (almost), better than native
As stated, the game doesn't quit correctly. You have to Alt+F4 and force quit.
- Game crashes often with Esync enabled.
- Crashes on startup with D9VK. Couldn't try with "protontricks 16450 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10" because my distro doesn't launch protontricks at the moment, dependancies outdated. I will update when possible if it makes any difference.
A lot of missing/black textures.
Disabling Esync seems to resolve the frequent crashes problem. Though I didn't play long enough to be sure that it's completely solved.
Use : WINEARCH=win32 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
And the lagfix : https://github.com/rebtd7/FF13Fix
When using surround, there are no voices during FMVs.
The game is extremely CPU demanding. Which makes it very slow (between 25 and 60 FPS on my system), while not even starting the fans of my GPU. I've also had to limit the number of cores used adding taskset -c 0-5 to the launch command. After testing, 6 cores seems the be the sweet spot. Also, shaders compiling takes time every time you arrive to a new area. The game is extremely slow during these few minutes.
2 Crashes in more than 40 hours of gameplay, so no big deal.
Add PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 to the launch command to avoid audio issues.
At first lauch the Ubisoft launcher will update and aks for a key. Don"t do anything except going to the Settings menu and disable the overlay. Then close it. Once you restart the game through Steam, it should find the key automatically and launch the game. Besides the launch command, I've found a way to greatly improve performances. There is an option in the game's settings file called "d3d11multithreadedrendering". It's disabled by default because it's known to cause crashes on Windows. Well good news, it doesn't on Linux and GREATLY improves performances, the game not being CPU limited anymore. I gained a minimum of 50% FPS and the ability to tune the graphics details if needed, when before that, it changed the graphics, but not the FPS. So, set it to "true". I've played more than 30 hours without a single crash.
Disabling Esync speeds up loading times, but they're still unbearably long. Note that changing the framerate to "variable" instead of "fixed" greatly increases the loading speed, but a bug with the contextual menu prevents this mode from being playable.
Awfully slow loading times or bugged contextual menus...
Use 'protontricks 17460 winecfg' and set openal32 to builtin.
Out of the box the game only outputs 2.0 sound with some issues. To fix all of that :
- Install on your distro openal and openal32 and set you desired audio in alsoft-config (you'll probably need some tweaking but it's worth). Don't hesitate to try the Decoder Configurations in the Renderer tab.
- Set openal32 to builtin in Winecfg.
- Disable Steam-runtime so it uses the openal you've installed and your config. (depends on the distro I think, on Manjaro, install steam-native package, you can also do it through Lutris, but make sure you have all the dependancies installed)
- I personnally have the in-game audio config to hardware. Don't know if it's relevant though.
Now you should have a much greater audio experience.
The game is much slower than it should be, but still very playable.
Crashes occasionnaly, but is very playable.
Doesn't output any sound the first time you launch the game. No problems after that.
Can be a bit slow but is still highly playable in that regard.
The game crashes and freezes every now and then. I think it has something to do with KDE notifications poping up. You might want to disable them while playing.
Game is much faster with D9VK. Disabled Physx in game to avoid HUGE slowdows.
Set openal32 to builtin in winecfg, see later for details why.

UE3 usual stuttering. Except that, Physx has to be disabled or the game is unplayable.
Install Games for Windows using 'protontricks 21690 --gui' Then follow the instructions for WMP11 on this page : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760498189
- note that I couldn't find WMP11 on the Microsoft page but it can easily be found on internet.
As too often, the game outputs only stereo audio.
Works oput of the box and a lot better performances than native (like almost twice).
Using a DS3 I had a wierd dead spot on the right analog stick. Also it enables X's joystick as mouse feature somehow.
