I've always used Wine and have Steam installed on it, but I run it using Lutris and force it to use DXVK. I haven't had any problems playing the game. It freezes every time I try to use WineD3D or VKD3D.
gamemoderun PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
Would crash on Manjaro before, no problem in Arch.
Having to suffer through the slow downs is not a good experience at all, and I expect things to get worse when I progress more.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
The game will have fairly frequent slow downs, the framerate doesn't drop, but the entire game runs in slow motion.
Without the launch settings, the game will randomly crash before reaching the menu or starting the demo
Some further information about my system: Running Gnome 44.1, on an Nvidia laptop, with the entire xorg session being rendered using the Nvidia card. I also have my laptop hooked up to a second external monitor, and
Runs practically flawless and with great performance.
I reassign controls for all my games, I prefer my own layout always.
A very minor glitch when saving the game is that for a brief moment at the right panel the thumbnail of the game screen appears then disappears. But the thumbnail does appear when loading savegames. It has no impact on gameplay whatsoever.
Different from the desktop, on the Deck it doesn't require turning off fsync and esync with launch parameters. Also, it has writings with small letters at some scenes but I found them to be perfectly legible, but I reckon some people with vision problems might not be ok with them.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%
crashed a few times probably due to missing frame rate limit. seems to go smooth since i added launch options.
Demo crashed - uninstalled it
crashed
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
Meteor flying by misses shader, weapons (minigun and flamethrower) miss shader. You don't see the weapon effect. I did not notice any other missing graphics.
After my first playthrough in my previous report, I could not start the game anymore. It would immediately crash on startup. With the latest Proton-7.2-GE-3-test-2 it starts again and works fine. There are only a couple of minor missing graphic effects for your weapon and the meteor that fly's by in the middle of the game.
I had a playthrough without any crashes. I don't know if the stability issues are gone. I will update this report after more plays.
Proton-6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.21-GE-2
Looks good until big slowdown to 5 fps and possible crash
5 fps after 20 minutes in game. Switch between fullscreen (or back) give you 5 more minutes of good fps
crash after 20 minutes
3 FPS
Not playable (around 3 FPS)
Install and show error message
After install and run I have next message: "ERROR: unable to load: riftbreaker_dll_win_Release.dll". That's all.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Keys were not set to default. Probably an issue with the game itself.
It was stable on the menu. I played for a few minutes then crashed. I'm going to keep trying.
Not working with Proton 6.3-7 or Experimental at time of posting.
Too unstable to enjoy, although it runs pretty smooth and has no issues other than that. Best wait.
6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton 6.19-GE-2 glorious eggroll
17 minutes of gameplay until first crash, was in the prologue.

Before launching the game, select the configurator, and switch to DirectX 11, instead of DX12 (default), or the game will at some point just slow down significantly and not recover
Does not work out of the box
needs tinkering, proton-6.19-ge-2 and PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 in commandline
Had to use this to get it to run. https://github.com/Patola/wine/releases/tag/protola_6.3_rbespbgvwd
Flamethrower was missing flames. Minimap occasionally was just a black square. Photon Gun seemed to just be lighting effects on ground.
Ran about 10-15 minutes before crashing.
I had to open the "Riftbreaker Configuration" tool and switch to DX11 to get it to run. I did not try using the Proton flag for this, but maybe I should have.
I had to swithc to this to get the game working: https://github.com/Patola/wine/releases/tag/protola_6.3_rbespbgvwd
https://github.com/Patola/wine/releases/tag/protola_6.3_rbespbgvwd
used this fork to fix the "ERROR: unable to load: ‘riftbreaker_dll_win_Release.dll" error to start the game.
frequently crashed to desktop without warning.

Sometimes the games slows down during certain effects. E.g. when you use your melee weapon.
It is a given that the game will crash to desktop after playing for some time. I have not been able to play more 30 minutes without a crash.
Within 30 minutes the game will crash.
After latest Proton 6.3-6 it finally started.
Sometimes with details on ultra, the game hangs. Seems to not occur on medium and low settings.
This demo/free prologue stopped working due to a new dependency of an application notify API, not implemented in wine. @EsdrasTarsis made a patch with stubs (empty functions) for that API and now the game works. I have made a build with the patch (and a few other patches for other games). Before considering downloading, please see my history here and in github, you should not download executable stuff from random people in the internet. https://github.com/Patola/wine/releases/tag/protola_6.3_rbespbgvwd
Does not work, fails on not being able to load a dll
ERROR: unable to load: 'riftbreaker_dll_win_Release.dll'
Tried several different versions of Proton, got a dll-error all the time
game isn't working anymore.
regardless what proton version i've tried. from 5.13, proton 6.3, to proton ge 6.10. gives some dll error when trying to launch it.
Works OOB with Proton 6.3-3
Game simulation slows down if not using "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%"
Crashes out during level loading
Tried few proton versions (including GE) and NOESYNC flag someone suggested. Nothing helped, crash is consistent.
Crashes after Dec 10 update
Was working fine before that but seems to crash consistently now
Consistently crashes to desktop after 5-10min
Tried with Proton 5.0-9 and 5.9-GE-8-ST same results
I am however running on a laptop, and although temps oscilated between 75-95, they did spike to 100, so unsure if the crash is CPU safeguard based or just due to not running on linux (note runs fine in Win10 on same laptop)
Maybe your hardware will do better than mine. Who knows.
For RTX2060, game runs very choppy, with average of 12-16FPS or so. Marginally improved by setting all settings to low, but choppines is still there. Quite probably because its alpha and will be improved over time.
Crashed about one hour into gameplay, after I changed all the graphical settings for the 3rd time.
Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST GloriousEggroll
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.9-GE-5-ST
On first launch, mouse was stuck in the left upper corner. Fixed itself on the second launch.
Crashes after a few minutes in-game. Not really playable because of that.
With the crash to desktops not so much. Maybe that will change when it has its real release down the road.
Had a couple crash to desktop. Game is technically pre-Alpha so it might not be Proton specific.
Mouse position was not being tracked
Crash on exit, had to kill the process
