Everything works with Proton 5.0
Use Proton 5.0 to make mods that connect to the internet work, such as SongBrowser (search for and download custom songs) and ScoreSaber (scoreboards for custom songs).
Doesn't work with DXVK, WineD3D required.
xna31 required.
Full setup guide:
- Launch game once with Proton 5.0
- "protontricks 335080 xna31"
- Set launch options: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
- Enjoy
Seems to still work fine!
I only played until I reached the desert boss.
The game defaulted to high settings and with my GTX 1060 at 1920x1200 I got about 60-80 FPS in open areas and 30 in areas with very heavy particle effects (desert sand storm). Overall it felt pretty stable, even in low fps areas.
protontricks 341500 xna40
"Missing media player missing" error in menu, informs you that music won't work. Normal game audio works though.
I tested the first 2 levels/worlds and didn't encounter any issues. Step-by-step instructions to get the game working:
- Set proton version to 5.0 and launch the game
- Wait about half a minute after the "first time setup" and close the game through steam after that
- Install xna40 through protontricks:
protontricks 341500 xna40
- Enjoy :)
The gameplay itself worked perfectly fine.
The main musics volume was a bit weird. I turned it down to 25%, but it went back to 100% for a fraction of a second every now and then.
In local multiplayer, the last player (uses numpad numbers as controls) was detected as the third player (uses arrow keys as controls) as well unless the numpad was activated.
I only tested the tutorial, which ran pretty well. CPU was at ~60% and GPU at ~40%. Ran at lowest settings except AA (max) in 1440p.
Works fine from what I can tell.
The mouse flickers in the main menu.
It crashed when I joined an online server for the first time. Not a single crash after that.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any server with players online, so I can't say anything about how it runs during normal rounds/matches.
No issues whatsoever.
Works well and their anticheat software, "SaberClaw", runs in Wine/Proton.
Some teammates had performance issues a few months ago, although those seem to have been resolved. I never had them.
It uses EAC, but the developers enabled Proton compatibility recently.
I didn't play too much, but it seemed completely fine and worked as expected. The menu buttons flashed all the time, but they worked fine.
It's hard to tell if there are really issues or not. The gameplay itself was completely fine, but the menu buttons flashed all the time and there were some particles in the menu that looked out of place.
Despite the bad performance and usual early access issues, I don't think there are any Proton-specific issues apart from the input issue.
Sometimes when tabbing out and back in, it doesn't recognize the input. Simply doing it again fixes it.
The game runs pretty bad, although that appears to be a game issue, not a Proton issue.
Flawless with Proton 5.0
Had to use Proton 5.0
This game runs really well. Unfortunately I can't say much about performance because my current GPU, an R9 290, can't handle a lot, but I still got an enjoyable experience with my HTC Vive after tweaking some config files to further reduce the graphics quality. Lag in this game appears more as stutters than just reduced framerate, so make sure you have a decent GPU!
Unfortunately the game is dead and the servers are offline, therefore I couldn't test anything.
Changing the music volume in the settings doesn't seem to work.
There doesn't seem to be any fps limit or vsync setting, which caused my GPU to max out. I just installed "libstrangle" and set the launch parameters to the following to force vsync: strangle -v 2 %command%
The game itself runs well and is enjoyable, aside from minor issues that usually don't affect the gameplay.
Noticable audio crackling by default. Fix from another report:
In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
Set default-fragments to 5
Set default-fragment-size-msec to 2
The game likes to steal my mouse. :<
Playing in windowed allows me to alt-tab fine though.
Steam cloud saves seem to be out of sync very often and sometimes fail to update when prompted.
Minor slow downs when a lot of stuff is going on on screen (mostly on lower levels), even with fsync, alternative kernels and feral gamemode.
As of right now, the game is pretty much unplayable, although with some tweaking you can manage to get into the game.
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
protontricks 44340 -q gfw
Missing UI
To get it running, you gotta tinker around a bit:
- First off, launch the game once with the latest Proton version and let it go through the initial setup steps.
- Once the status in Steam changed back to "Play", you gotta install "Games for Windows Live" via protontricks: "protontricks 44340 -q gfw"
- Next, you need to disable both ESYNC and FSYNC by setting the launch parameters to the following: "PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%"
- Now you can launch the game again and it should boot up fine. You gotta wait until you see an empty main menu.
- Once you see the static/noice background animation playing, press enter once and a GFW popup should appear, where you have to create an offline account. When launching the game again in the future, you still have to press enter once, although there won't be any other GFW popup to go through.
- After that you are back in the main menu, although you can't see any buttons. First you wanna press enter and then escape after to ensure you have the first menu entry selected. After that you just press enter thrice, which will first enter the mission selection, then into the loadout and mission info screen and lastly start the mission.
- Enjoy the game with broken graphics and no hud.
Obviously this is by no means playable, although hopefully this report sparks some interest and results in others trying to find solutions for the remaining issues.

Until Proton pulls in an updated version of DXVK, you need to download a recent build artifact and extract the 32-bit DXVK dlls into the game folder. They can be downloaded here: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/actions/workflows/artifacts.yml?query=branch%3Amaster
Only tested for 10 minutes and didn't have any issues.
If you get past the main menu, it runs fine.
UI buttons are often either very delayed or require multiple mouseclicks. The lower the framerate, the more clicks you need. With Vsync enabled, I was unable to click any UI buttons. Unsure if it's a Proton or a game bug, since the game in general seems to be very broken and unfinished according to reviews.
I only played the first act and I didn't find any gameplay issues.
The "Bleeding Edge" beta version of Proton Experimental is required as of a recent game update. With that, it works fine.
I only launched the game and connected to a multiplayer game, which worked fine. I suspect it will run just as well as with other Proton versions before the game update that broke it for those.
It runs really well. You need to create and connect a Microsoft account with your Steam account (works fine via the steam overlay).
I noticed some minor artifacts/stripes near the ships wheel every now and then. When decreasing the shadow quality in the settings, they look weirdly pixelated from the distance, but I'm unsure if it's even a proton specific problem.
As soon as you get around the menu issues, it works pretty well.
The golden collactible things make a very loud sound that doesn't seem to be influenced by the sound setting.
Input is a bit weird. I wasn't able to click anything with only mouse and when I attached a controller, I had to switch between controller and mouse for the first few inputs. Shortly after the actual game began, I was able to use my mouse and keyboard for controls too, but something definitely seems off with input in menus.
Works perfectly. All bugs I encountered are game bugs due to it being an early alpha.
Since this game is still heavily in development (early access alpha launch 2 days ago), performance can vary a lot. I highly recommend to set an FPS limit that your PC can reach 95% of the time for a more consistent experience. I set mine to 45 FPS, for example. Apart from that, the game likes to "crash" occasionally due to game bugs, which opens a report window you need to close to continue playing. You might need to alt-tab a few times after closing the window to gain back control of your character.
Apart from broken voice chat, it works well. Intel Arc requires some simple workarounds though.
force_vk_vendor="-1" %command%
Enabling voice chat crashes the game shortly after.
Some billboards on the sides of buildings appear to be missing textures. I am unsure if it's related to DX11, Intel Arc, or if it happens with other GPUs in general too.
There were some initial stutters with DX11, most likely due to shader compilation. They were mostly gone after 2-3 rounds.
Launching the game with DX12 as-is does not work on Intel Arc. You either need to use the env var force_vk_vendor="-1", or launch it with DX11 using the -dx11 launch argument.
I did the majority of my testing on DX11 so far, since I wasn't aware of the DX12 workaround until just now.
The game works, but is definitely in very early development and no optimizations have been done at all. Give it a few updates before buying.
The mouse stays locked in the game when the UI is open, even in window mode, however that could be a game issue.
Problem mentioned under "windowing or fullscreen".
The game is very badly optimized currently, which is a known issue on any platform. When actually in a mission, I get around 20 FPS at 1280x800 using lowest settings in desktop mode.
- I only tested this game in desktop mode, not in handheld/gaming mode.
- I played the tutorial and 2 online missions in a team of 3. No networking/online issues whatsoever.
- The game runs on Unity using HDRP, which hurts performance in this case and is unnecessary for the graphical style and quality.
- No optimizations seem to have been done whatsoever, not even basic "good practices" like turning off cameras when they are not in use, such as the one used in the character loadout panel, hurting performance significantly.
- The graphics options are very limited and don't allow you to tweak much.
Works perfectly out of the box with latest Proton 6.3. Runs very smooth on my system.
Game launches at very high volume, causing audio crackling on my Index. Setting it to 30-40% gets rid of it.
protontricks 270550 xna40
Main menu is running at 30-40 fps. Everything else is stable 60 though.
Videos are not working and there is a text in the menu that reads something along the lines of "windows media player not found".
I tested one multiplayer and one singleplayer round. Both worked perfectly fine.
Step-by-step instructions to get the game working:
- Set proton version to 5.0 and launch the game
- Close error box when it appears and close the game through steam after that
- Install xna40 through protontricks:
protontricks 270550 xna40
- Enjoy :)
If you are OK with some stutters, it's a fun little game/demo to try.
Some audio effects seem very loud compared to the rest sometimes. It's especially noticable a few seconds after you change the volume in the settings.
Some stutters, especially when you restart a level.
The menu sometimes seems to be stuck and you need to press enter or "A" on the gamepad a few times to continue.
Works fine, minor issues when playing in 16:10.
Game was clearly designed for 16:9 and playing on 16:10 results in a chunk of the window missing at the bottom. Doesn't hinder gameplay though.
