Runs as if native. Saving takes a bit longer than I'd expect, but that happens on Windows too. Absolutely recommend, either on Deck or on PC.
Reduced frame rate to 30 FPS
This game really shouldn't be verified. The graphics default to high - which struggles to even play at 15 FPS. Even at minimum settings, getting it to hit 30 is an achievement. Far as I can tell hitting 60 is impossible.
Other than the incredibly bad performance yeah it's the game. Dunno if there's anything else to say. I just don't think it should be verified in any way, shape or form.
Refresh rate 20; all settings set to lowest
Game failed to run at a consistent 20 FPS
I cannot for the life of me get this game to run over 20 FPS, definitely not without murdering the device's integrity in the process. Playing this game at 30 seems like suicide seeing as the thing was overheating at only 20. Game features no options for resolution scaling either, which is extremely important when your game makes medium-tier hardware take off like a jet engine. Should really be set to "playable" at best, and honestly I'd argue it should be unsupported; this is a terrible experience on Steam Deck.
Controls are obviously not made with the deck in mind. Game also has a Unity launcher window that requires workarounds when not using keyboard + mouse. Performance-wise though, the game works fine. Any and all issues I had with the game occur on Windows as well (including a visual bug when launching the game).
There's probably ways around it but I'm not too interested in tinkering around with this game right now. Either way, its "unsupported" rating is fitting for the moment. I do believe the developer has states that he has plans to implement Steam Deck support in a future update, but for the time being the game is unplayable on default settings.
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
Very minor; went away after a second or two
Screen was completely black for me the first time I launched. All I had to do though was put in those launch parameters, and ever since it's worked perfectly. DualSense's adaptive triggers even work, assuming you have it set up properly.
the uh the erm kibby kab game it uh yeah you can car quest yep yep
Same as 1 and 2, works fine with Proton. Haven't experienced any issues with it thus far, and I don't foresee that changing seeing as CQ1 and 2 also ran perfectly on Linux. Very nice!
Capped framerate to 40
Text boxes often go offscreen or bounce around wildly
Excessive heat caused by poor optimization
Game is poorly optimized and has little/no graphics settings. Native version seems to be fine (which is to say it runs equally as poorly as the Windows version). Cloud saves sync between Windows and Linux, which is surprisingly rare. If you really wanna play this on the go, rest assured you totally can.
Works as you'd expect! Surely it'll be Verified once Valve gets to rating it.
Despite being marked as unsupported, I have had zero issues as of yet with the game. It runs at a perfect framerate without any visual or auditory bugs whatsoever. What makes it qualify as "Unsupported" is beyond me when it runs without any issues.
Deleted Settings.sav
Been like this since I got my deck. Some have suggested deleting the settings file, but that did nothing. Seems totally unplayble, for the time being at least.
Limit framerate to 30
Some text cut off by screen edge
Whole game looked like sludge, very hard to tell what's what
Dips well below 30
Epic Games website crashes SteamOS (how appropriate)
"Verified" game being unable to keep 30 FPS in the PROLOGUE on MINIMUM SETTINGS? If that doesn't tell you all you need to know I don't know what will.
Doesn't work. Like, at all.
The Linux port is totally borked and doesn't seem to work regardless of which device I'm using. Worse, the Windows version doesn't even work through Proton, making the game completely unplayable. Unlucky.
Linux version doesn't work at all. Game didn't work with Proton either on my main PC, but plays fine on Deck. What a weird game...
No controller support
Most problems I have do ultimately stem from the game's old age. Lack of controller support really sucks, and I'm not sure why it can't be patched in considering the game was on consoles and is still supported (it got cloud saves only like 3 years ago for crying out loud). Game also lacks support for widescreen resolutions, though this can be patched in, luckily, and shouldn't affect your gameplay experience too much even if not patched in. Good if you know what you're in for, but don't expect any modern luxuries we take for granted nowadays.
Reduced framerate to 40 to reduce heat
Crappy launcher is mouse-only
Minor crackling at times, seemingly random
Logos/cutscenes cannot be skipped on controller
The launcher really hurts the game, sadly. While I appreciate the ability to edit graphics options outside of the game itself, it KILLS playing this game on a controller. And why can't you skip video scenes on controller? Eugh.
That said if you're playing this on a keyboard and mouse you shouldn't have any issues. Not bad performance-wise, just really poor controller implimentation.
Linux version locks up within seconds of entering the game, regardless of rendering engine used, making it totally unplayable. Windows version is even worse, usually not even getting to the title screen before crashing. This has been reported a few times on the community forums, but the devs have only responded once to inquire further (which the poster didn't reply to). Definitely not deserving of the "Verified" label when some users can't even boot into the game. Shame I'm over the refund limit already.
As others have mentioned, cutscenes crash the game. Can be fixed by removing the cutscenes, but then you miss out on plot details. Sucks! Hopefully this'll get resolved soon, but I wouldn't count on it.
Developers didn't set up cloud saves properly, and saves don't sync between Windows and Linux, forcing me to use the Windows version of the game for cloud saves and defeating the purpose of having a Linux build.
I don't know why you'd go to the trouble of making a Linux version of a game only to fudge cloud saves and ensure they don't function properly. Looking at SteamDB though, it seems the developers didn't know what they were doing with cloud saves at all; it's a complete hodgepodge of random directories, many of which I don't think even deal with save data. Did they even read the documentation? To come so far and fail at the finish line.
Other than that, it's playable. I just can't understand how issues that glaring go undetected.
Reduced graphics for better battery life.
For some unthinkable reason, graphic settings seem to sync via Steam Cloud. I sincerely hope you don't expect to be switching between PC and Deck because it will NOT work out.
Controller support on Payday 2 is terrible and reeks of the era it was made in. There's no way to switch between keyboard + mouse and controller mid-game, and something about playing with a controller feels...wrong.
While you CAN bind keyboard + mouse settings to the controller, doing so still feels off and disables what little aim assist controllers are given.
Performance-wise however Payday 2 feels absolutely stellar, especially for a portable. It's a shame the controls are so terrible, because this would be an AMAZING (and the only) way to play the desktop version of Payday 2 portably! With any luck, hopefully Payday 3 fixes these issues once that game releases later this year.
When putting the Deck into sleep mode and turning it back on, any newly-loaded textures will be corrupted beyond recognition (and seemingly look like Chinese characters, for some reason?)
Steam Cloud between Linux and Windows versions do not work, forcing the user to use the Windows build under Proton to work properly
Framerate chugs HARD in some parts
For a "verified" game, Postal 2 runs embarrassingly badly both on Linux and Windows builds. Linux is missing Steam Cloud and Windows features very noticeable visual and audio degredation, as well as texture corruption. While the game functionally works fine, such heavy performance issues really can't be ignored, and ruin the gameplay for me a lot of the time.
Also, I have no idea what they changed in the 20th anniversary update to get it Verified on Steam Deck. All the bugs and issues from before remain, if not are even worse, and I haven't noticed a single change to make the game more playable. It just performs super poorly, and I can't see any defense for it other than "game old" (even though I imagine many of these issues have nothing to do with the engine, especially Steam Cloud. That's just inexcusable.)
Native sounded fine; Windows via Proton was noticeably worse.
Game would randomly unbind controller for no apparent reason; no xinput support on native, resulting in a spinning camera
Cloud saves do not work on the native version
Sadly the game is in a pitiful state. The native Linux version is missing xinput support and cloud save functionality, meanwhile the Windows version boasts significantly degraded audio and random unbinding of controller buttons. Not to mention sometimes for no apparent reason it'll show keybaord icons even while using controller, making playing the game needlessly confusing. I would love-love-LOVE for this to get patched, but there's no way to tell if that will ever happen.
Occasional slowdowns, appear to be a game issue rather than a Proton issue since they happen on Windows as well
No major issues or performance dips that I imagine would be a dealbreaker for anyone. Small issue is the game is frame-timed, so if you like turning down the framerate to save battery like I do, that's just not an option. The game will slow down if you do this. I believe the same thing applies if you have a monitor above 60 FPS, but I can't test that. Either way if you're willing to put up with the admittedly annoying framerate quirks, this game is as good now as it was 20 years ago. I do recommend.
40 FPS limited
Most text is very small
Seemed random, sometimes happened sometimes didn't
Crashes every ~30 minutes, without warning
As with most RE Engine games, I've experienced nothing but instability from this game on Deck. It runs great normally, fantastic even, but it's all for naught when the game can't go more than a few minutes before crashing, wasting your time and trashing your progress since last save. Hell, I still have yet to manually save the game ONCE, just because I've wasted so much time making progress only to have the game crash and send me back 20 minutes. Verified? Come on now.
Limited CPU/GPU and set framerate to 30
A lot of text is small
Was so taxing on the Deck's hardware I'm afraid it'll make it suffer from heat damage
Crashes every ~20 minutes, or whenever you press shift+tab on desktop
Incredibly demanding on the hardware given the game's simplistic nature and crashes to the point that you can't realistically make any progress, unless you're in a multiplayer server that you can join back to. Not deserving of the "verified" badge at all.
Level editor is made specifically for mouse and keyboard, and you are unable to exit the screen without using a mouse and/or the touchscreen
Native build is borked and crashes on startup. Forcing Proton makes the game work. Game generally works out-of-the-box, except the level editor like mentioned earlier (really poor foresight there). Rest of the game should be as you'd expect.
40 FPS cap to save battery
Occasional hitches, and runs the Deck much harder than you'd expect it to. Freezes when loading some assets for the first time per launch.
Performance is really bad on this game. Though I chose to cap it, the game can struggle to keep 60 at low settings when uncapped. Not an issue with the Linux port though, as the Windows version appears to run even worse, struggling to keep itself above 45. Not really recommended on Deck, unless you're willing to put up with stuttering, but a beefy enough PC might be able to bruteforce its way through it. This game is apparantly planning for release on the Switch, but I shudder to imagine what that port's framerate would look like.
Change FPS to 30
Developer recommends setting FPS to 40 since the game only runs at 30 FPS, however I'm pretty sure doing this makes the game run at an inconsistent framerate (math 'n' shit) so I don't recommend doing that.
Other than that, the controls on controller are, uh, really god damn bad and also can't be changed, though that's a game issue rather than a proton issue. Either way if you can get over the horsecrap controls, the game performs perfectly on Steam Deck.
40 FPS
Stupid default Unity launcher baloney
Almost all of it
Constant frame drops at minimum graphics settings
Legitimately crashes every 5 minutes or so, haven't been able to save the game it's so bad
"Playable" rating is a really funny joke. This game crashes constantly. Unless you love reliving the plane crash all the time, this is completely unplayable. To be fair this isn't really Proton's fault, The Forest is just an amazingly shitty game that just can't run for more than 5 seconds on any PC under $5,000. The fact they charge money for this is hilarious.
Works perfectly
Proton causes slowdowns and visual degredation for me, so native is definitely the way to go. Seems to work perfectly. Can't get it to run at a consistent 120 FPS, but that's probably just a hardware and/or Early Access issue more than anything. Runs at a perfect 60 FPS.
Changed graphics settings
Controllers are not supported, and the game's mouse and keyboard controls don't lend themselves well to controller
While it works as you'd expect, it's just not well optimized. The game's been missing controller support since launch, and seeing as the game's been all but abandoned, chances are it won't be getting it anytime soon. A shame since the game's not bad.
Old Unity startup launcher, no controller support
Surprisingly the game has controller support! At least it does once you get past the starting launcher. Using controller allows you to access all functionality in the game...EXCEPT zooming in/out. My solution has been to map a scroll wheel to the left trackpad for zooming and a mouse/click to the right trackpad for the launcher, thus allowing you to access all functionality without pulling up the keyboard or using the touchscreen. I might share the configuration later, so check community configs to see if I did. Anyway, after that, game runs at a perfect 60 and does everything you'd want it to. Recommended, surprisingly!
