I had to use source port of RTCW. Since the source is built, the game runs natively on Linux. Used: https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw
Proton could not work regardless of version or launch option. Had to use a community made source port.

I never got to the main menu
I tried to install dll for DirectX 9
A window opens and closes quickly so I never got to the main menu. I tried several versions of Proton, Proton-GE, Wine... I tried via Lutris on GOG. Nothing works.

A frustrating 'playable' experience from Steam when needing to download outside sources to fix the issue
Left click for trackpad for menus and made own custom layout out of skeleton of my pre-Call of Duty 4 layout
Only when using Luxtorpeda; requires closing the secondary window in-game
Setting full screen to on would zoom into the bottom left while in the main menu; in-game, no matter the resolution or full screen setting, the game would load in a small box as the play space.
Mouse would either not move or overestimate in low/ high sensitivities and keyboard seemed to pop up randomly, especially during loading screens and in menus
Unsupported
On top of having to download an application to fix my issue, it wasn't fixed until I force quit out of the game and accepted to go into safe mode. Lesson learned on playable games according to Steam themselves.

Pretty much flawless
Few small crackles, but could be due to my hardware as the laptop I am using has had audio crackling before on other occasions.
RADV_PERFTEST=gpl gamemoderun %command%

Game runs perfectly
I have not encountered any performance or graphical issues.

I had issues with my mouse at first, I couldn't select anything on the main menu. On advice from others here, I installed ProtonUp-Qt through flathub, installed Luxtorpeda, restarted steam, then picked Luxtorpeda in the "Force the user of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" menu. Luxtorpeda automatically installed the native engine. With Luxtorpeda my mouse worked correctly, and I was able to set my monitors native resolution for the game. Everything worked perfectly afterwards.
Runs fine out of the box, but since this is a older game, it doesn't support 16:9 aspect ratios and higher resolutions natively
Game opened in windowed low res, and when selected fullscreen option, the "game window" was small, didn't affect me that much since I still could select my monitor resolution (1080p) and the game screen was the same as monitor.
I've used Luxtorpeda for that resolution issue though. Install it from ProtonUp-Qt from Flathub, and select as the compatibility tool for the game in Game Properties. The first time the game opens after, will appear a window asking to select a game engine, select "iortcw" and continue. Then just play normally.
What this will do is use a Linux-native game engine, which will give you better performance and for this game letting you select 16:9 resolutions.

Use Luxtorpeda to bump the resolution up (1080p for me). Menu naviagation needs mouse. Controller works fine otherwise.

some weird mouse sensitivity
Some issues with the mouse but was stable otherwise.
This game does not have full controller support through all of the menus. The controller works automatically after starting a game.
This game requires a mouse/trackpad to navigate menus. Controller works in-game to control your character and works well.

Choosing a resolution more thant 856x450 the game will crash. In that case, just erase the .cfg file in the game folder.
Runs at a smooth 60 fps via steam deck. Had to use community controller layout for gamepad suppport.
Runs completely fine on Proton 5.0-10 without any changes whatsoever
You wont be able to run higher resolutions, this is due to The game being very old.
Better use Luxtorpeda, which brings support to a native Linux launcher (in this case, iortcw) for more features
On high settings mouse lags. but on recommended setting the mouse input was not lag despite running on good fps.
Input Lag with Mouse only. Very minor if you play on highest settings. Other than that, low settings does not give mouse input lag. But runs at good fps.

Game plays native on Proton 4.11-13
Can't play Resolution higher then 1024x768
Some settings could not be changed without a game crash, but I was able to get the game to recognize my resolution.

Gained widescreen resolutions after using the source port, the installed version from steam works beautifully otherwise.

The game runs perfectly on a source port that's available for download. Link shown https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases
Source port
Works fine. Minor stability issues
Could not escape from fullscreen with alt+tab
You need to regenerate the wolfconfig file after the tram level otherwise the game crashes
Needs some tweaking to play with modern resolutions but that's due to the game game being old.
Runs like native.
Runs fine out of the box.
Worked the exact same as on Windows, not much else to say.
Tried playing the first level and it worked.
The game tried to install malware (Punkbuster), but hopefully Proton won't let it burn my SSD like it did on Windows.
Changes need to be made to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to remove crackling.
Needs the rtcw package installed from the Debian repos. Screen res needs to be set in the wolfconfig files and set r_mode to -1.
Crashes after the tram level. wolfconfig needs to be deleted in order to proceed [will autoregenerate, you'll have to reset the widescreen res etc though].
This game runs really well.
The game didn't support my native resolution(1600 x 900) so I used the closest resolution that wasn't above mine(1152 x 864).
The game didnt supported my resolution out of the box (1920x1080)
The Knightmare Patch is highly recommended: http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/downloads.htm (adds widescreen supports, better audio, bugfixes,etc...)
No issues.

Runs perfectly for me with no tweaks. I had an issue with it not starting after I changed my monitor and moved the display port connection. The resolution miss match caused the problem, which I think is a problem with the game and not Proton. Fixed by setting the config file setting r_mode=1. Settings at maximum, FPS seems capped to 91FPS. Plays great!

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command% made the game run flawlessly at 91 fps with an integrated GPU. no crashes at all. great experience.

It starts then it closes i even used the __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command% command still doesn't work!

All I had to do was add this to the Launch Options and the game worked flawlessly. __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command%
That's it. Awesome!

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command% will get the game to work. Game works great after that! Before it was failing when the app was starting up!

Works perfectly. Unofficial patch is needed in order to work. Otherwise, it will crash upon launch. (This problem also occurs on Windows.)

Run only with custom command __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command%

Add MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 %command% to the steam game launch options to get it to start. Don't increase the resolution too much in the game's graphical settings, for me when setting it higher then 1080p it will crash giving an OpenGL error and refuse to start forcing me to delete the wolfconfig.cfg in the game's directory to get it too start again. Besides these minor issues the game runs absolutely great.
