One video didn't show.
With standard Proton, game is unplayable.
But using Proton GE7-20 fixed the issues, and the game runs phréatique now. FMV and cutscenes are OK, good performance. During my playthough, I encounter one video that didn't show (a transformation, so not a big issue).
It just works on Deck.
Looks like last Proton release fixed the game. Despite the "Unsupported" statut (probably tested with older Proton), the game runs fine now. Default resolution is set to 1080p so can be changed to 720p. Performance are also great, works at 60es without any trouble.
Not playable on Deck in the current state because of random crashes and other issues
Configuration tool is not working.
Windowed is set to the Vita’s native resolution of 960×544.
Ingame setting will reset each time you launch the game.
Random crashes.
• First of all, the configuration utility is not working and will display a blank screen. As a result, it is impossible to change the ingame resolution. As windowed is set for this game to the PS Vita’s native resolution of 960×544 (we are talking about a port), the game will kind of look blurry. I tried some solutions explained in other reports with protontricks, but enabling Window 7 compatibility in winecfg won't work. It is maybe possible to go blind on the blank screen as the cursor will change but good luck for finding the very good setting.
• Older Proton won't even launch the game.
• The ingame setting menu (for switching between ENG and JAP voices for example) will reset each time you launch the game.
• Bigger issue is that the game will randomly crash. After a cutscene or just while playing, the game can shut down without any warning. Older Proton, GE or Experimental didn't help. I tried several times and I didn't find any clues of what could trigger the crash, some runs are ok and will go without issue, while others runs won't even go further than the main screen.
• As a result of the random crashes, the game is not in a state of being playable on Steam Deck as you may randomly lost your progression.
Runs perfectly on Deck, need to restart the game or an external keyboard on first launch.
Impossible to confirm anything with the onscreen keyboard.
As implied by another Steam Deck report, on first launch, the game will prompt you to enter your player name while creating your save. The onscreen keyboard can be called but will be randomly dismiss by the Steam Deck navigator menu. Plus, it will be impossible to confirm the player name as pressing "Enter" on the keyboard doesn't do anything. The game is then stuck.
Two easy solutions:
You can use an external keyboard as said by other report.
If you don't have an external keyboard, you can also close to game, then relaunch it. On next launch, the game won't ask you to chose your player name. Instead, you will get the default player name "Adventurer". You can change it in the settings (but will still need an external keyboard as onscreen keyboard won't work again if you try to change it - this doesn't work whether Proton versions used, even GE).
Game works great and everything runs fine (even videos), default setting are Ultra + 1080p so can be change on 720p.
Works great on Deck... Actually a little too great?!
Built-in FPS limiter: 60fps,
Thermal power limit: 6 watts,
GPU clock: 1000 Mhz.
Game is running perfectly fine, out of the box. Video will also play without issue. With defaut settings, the game will display 120fps without any option ingame to change it. I advise you to use those settings:
• Built-in FPS limiter to 60fps,
• Thermal power limit to 6 watts,
• GPU clock to 1000 Mhz.
Not only the game will still play like a charm at 60fps, but you will save your battery and will lowered by a lot fan RMP.
Also, got once an error during initial loading (but never encountered it again).
Default "window" setting is giving pixelated visual. Switching to Fullscreen or Borderless will solve the issue.
• On current Proton, GE or Experimental, the game has a huge save issue: you can save but the game won't recognize your save file so the load option won't appear. Switching to an older Proton version (6.3-8 or 5.13-6) will solve the issue. Note that if you already save with current Proton, the save file will appear with older versions.
• The game is running great and fine. Don't forget to switch to Fullscreen or Borderless to get crisp visual as window mode is pixelated.
• With older Proton, the opening movie will stutter, and with all versions, a movie won't display in the prologue but it seems that's the only real issue here.
• Also, the game is capped at 30fps whatever you will do with the settings. This is not an Deck issue, the game is already working like this on PC. An unofficial 60fps patch was made (check discussions regarding the game on Steam website) and is actually working fine on Steam Deck. Just access from Desktop mode to the game directory and swap the Noire.exe from the patch with the default one.
Works like native on Deck.
The game is just working flawless on Deck, great experience and good performance with 60fps. For some reasons, A and B buttons were switched and couldn't be changed with the ingame setting so had to switch them from Steam OS setup.
Works like a charm on Deck.
Game runs perfectly. For some reasons, subtitles was not enabled by default (it has to be set in settings).
Running great on Deck.
Set Dynamic Resolution to off, FPS Limit to 60 ingame and then capping fps to 30 from the Steam Deck menu to avoid stutters.
Runs like a native game on Deck.
Works great, great experience and performance on Deck.
On launch, after the first loading screen, the game is freezing during the Idea Factory video. Most of Proton versions will bring a black screen or only sound before getting stuck. Proton Experimental will display the video but will still freeze. Also tried some protontricks for codec videos without success.
The only working solution was brought by previous report from Kibaka, thanks a lot. You actually have to switch to 7.2-GE-2. The initial IF video, then the opening, will display a black screen but you will be able to skip then. The game is running really fine after this, even if fans are spinning a lot.
Runs fine on Deck.
As already reported, game is tagged as Unsupported for Steam Deck but it still works fine. The VR part is probably what brought Valve to sort it as not supported. This is still not an issue as VR part can be displayed in a no-VR mode. With default settings, the game will get inconsistent 30-45fps. Capping to 30fps or 40Hz is the way to go. Disabling post-processing will boost you to 60fps at the expense of visual quality.
Runs great on Deck.
Not a big issue that most players won't even notice: texts are easy to read, but for some reasons, in the text box, last two rows are very slightly blurry.
Fullscreen is affecting performance. Switching to windowed in settings will provide a better experience.
Some reports were saying movies didn't play without Proton-GE, but it actually worked fine for me even with standard Proton. After some hours, the game is running great on the Deck. Just be careful about performance in Fullscreen, from my current playthrough, I'm definitely earning some fps by going windowed.
Works out of the box on Deck.
Everything works great with good performance. Game is launching with gamepad setup, but using the touchscreen will instantly switch the UI to the keyboard setup (but controls will still work fine). Need to restart the game to get back to the good UI.
Can run like a charm on Deck with some High settings, 40Hz and no flickering with this setup
DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
As many reported, the game can provide a very annoying flickering effect if you play with framerate higher than 30fps. Yes, 30fps cap can be a solution but we are talking about Sonic, so gotta go fast because 30fps looks a little slow for a game based on speed. The flickering issue seems to be more random with rendering scale at 75% but then the game looks really blurry. After several trials, I managed to finally get a setup that seems to provide a solid experience with 40Hz, no flickering and sharp visuals. 2+ hours from several sessions with this setup and I didn't get a single issue.
- Forced Proton Experimental.
- Launch command: DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
- In-game settings: Blur Effect: No / Graphics Quality: Custom / Shadow Quality: Low / Frame Rate Limit: 60 / Anti-Aliasing: TAA / Ambient Occlusion: Enabled / Local Reflection: Enabled / Bloom: High / Volumetric Lighting: High / Rendering Scale: 100% / Resolution: 1024 x 576 / Screen Mode: Windowed / VSync: Off /
- Steam Deck settings: Refresh rate cap to 40Hz / FSR level 5 enabled.
Only downside will be battery life that will melt faster than Sonic can run.
Game is freezing after some cutscenes.
Tried many setups but didn't manage to get it works properly.
• The game is only starting with Proton 6.3-8. Newer versions (even Experimental and GE) won't manage to see more than the developper logo (white screen) and older versions won't even load from the SteamOS dashboard.
• On the first playthrough, the game is running perfectly but it will freeze at the end of the first sequence.
• When booting the game after a save was created, it is impossible to move on the main menu to load a save or to continue. The only fix I found was to go to the option, switch from Window to Fullscreen, leave the option, then enter it again and switch from Fullscreen to Window again.
• Using "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" as launch option can solve the first freeze and the main menu issue but the game is then running with aweful performance and heavy background artifact.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
Capping 40Hz from Steam Deck menu.
Each session with this game is a hit or miss.
- The game can freeze during initial loading.
- Background audio can be missing.
- Textures and effects can be missing. If you continue to play a session with missing textures, the game can randomly crash.
But from my playtime, note that all those issues don't always happen and you will notice them from the start. So in the end, just close and restart the game as many time as needed to get a "good" session. Sometimes I had to restart 3 or 4 times before getting a session without troubles, another time it went well from the beginning... And when the game is running fine, the experience is good. This is not a perfect solution of course, but still totally ok to enjoy the game on the Deck if restarting the game several time is not bothering you. Also, 40Hz mode is the way to go regarding performance.
Works perfectly on Deck.
Despite the "Unsupported" statut from Valve, everything seems fine and runs like native. Played several hours without getting any issues. Performance are great and videos are fine.
Works great on Deck, EVO modes can also be added.
Very rare.
Like other Falcom games on Deck, game can have issues when you come back from sleep mode.
Despite the Unsupported status, the game is fully playable as reported from previous players here. The game has very few issues that won't bring any trouble to your playthrought. Don't forget to run the config utility to change the resolution and to force the game resolution to native from the Deck menu as reported by Arlen (or the screen will be slightly cropped).
As for the EVO modes (voices, arts, visuals, movies and BGM), it is possible to make them work with some tweaks.
- To install them, from Desktop Mode, just drag and drop all the files needed in the Trails in the Sky folder.
- As it won't be possible to run the .bat files to install some files, just rename the files from the mod to match and override the original ones in the game folder.
- Don't forget to add the SoraVoice and SoraVoiceScripts files from GitHub to the voice folder.
- On Deck, apply the following launch options or the voices won't work : WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Running great on Deck, even with SenPatcher.
Game is running great from the start. I got crackling sounds at one point once in more than +10 hours (and it disappeared without even restarting). Crashes seems to occur when you are leaving sleeping mode from other reports.
- Note that you can apply both ToCS HD Texture Pack v6.10 and SenPatcher without issue. This will get you better textures and some QoL features like no more fade to black screen during Turbo Mode. In Desktop Mode, you will have to copy and overwrite the files in the Trails of Cold Steel folder. For SenPatcher, you will have to add it to the Steam Library as a new separate game in Desktop Mode. Then launch it with Proton Experimental. You will have to find the Trails of Cold Steel folder and select the game launcher (this can be tricky as the patcher is seeing many roots for your device). I got an error at first when I started the patch process but it went well in the end.
Great on Deck.
Stuttering.
Game didn't recognize anymore the Deck as a controller when waking up from sleep mode.
Game is running great, 60fps without any big issue. Got minor stuttering during gameplay and cutscenes (even after downloaded near 1Gb of shaders). Also, control didn't work anymore twice when waking up the Steam Deck from sleep mode. Not a big deal tho, the game is totally playable.
As a side note, with defaut settings, the game will add some red borders on top and bottom on the screen. If it bothers you, you can remove them by switching to Windowed mode in the Display options.
Runs great on Deck.
Some texts are small, but it doesn't affect the experience.
Single player works perfectly, didn't try online mode. Some menus like the Gallery need you to edit the control layout to press some keys.
Opening and tutorial videos won't play.
You have to play with the settings to get at least good performance - 40Hz is the way to go.
Works out of the box.
Perfect. 60fps, works like a native game.
Runs great on Deck.
Despite being marked as Unsupported, the game is running perfectly, didn't find any issue so far.
A part of the main menu is not visible tho, which could explain why Valve listed it as Unsupported.
Changing button layout is recommended for better confort.
