Game works perfectly out of the box.
I have played the entire game with 4k 60fps and controller. Everything works without any problems, including videos and the achievements.
Works out of the box with proton experimental

Tried Proton 7.0, Proton Experimental, Proton-GE 7.0. All give a black screen only.

Changing from keyboard to controller can sometimes break input detection. It takes some tweaking but eventually it started working.
mf-install
The game, regardless of the controller type, will always display Xbox controls. Overwriting (make sure you make a back up first) of the platform.steam and platform.steam.manifest files in ./SuperNeptuniaRPG_Data/StreamingAssets/ with with platform.ps4asia(.manifest) or platform.switch(.manifest) fixing this. This isn't just a Linux issue mind. Oddly, ps4 is actually ps4asia prompts, as X is back and O is confirm.
This game would not launch at all with the latest version of Proton. I had to force the game to instead use 4.11-13 and then use mf-install to get past the black screen.
Borked. Doesn't start at all
Pressing play doesn't present anything. Then it goes back to Play. I have tried with Proton 5.0-9 and 5.11-GE-1-MF, same result.
Terminal doesn't even appear to give an error, it appears to load the game, and then just closes it.
This "fixed" the black screen issue but read the next line...
There are instances that the logo screen softlocks (or goes black screen) and prevents me from going to the main menu. I've been successfully going to get to the main screen 7 times out of 19 times from opening the game (number changes as I keep trying to open or possible lost count of it from too many attempts). Skipping can be an option but it also softlocks the game. So I just wait for all four logo screen shows up because that's my indication, then if all four logo shows up the game runs good.
No need to use mf-install, just download custom proton and the game will able to play~
Textures sometimes not showing after moving to other location, after moving back and again to this location all textures showing fine.
Game starts usually after few tries, sometimes it stucks with black screen, even after applying mf-install.
CPU - AMD Phenom II 960T BE with all unlocked cores
As other's have stated, using mf-install on the proton prefix will fix the blackscreen. Once installed, the game runs flawlessly, even using DXVK.
Used Mf-install, worked fine if I only had one display turned on. If I had two the game blackscreened. Playstation controller did not work but using keyboard+mouse is fine too. Made it to just after rescuing Noir lvl ~25, no gameplay problems yet.
Used MF-Install for intro video support, played without problems for hours
Had to use mf-install from https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install. Once that was done, was able to start and play a few minutes into the game without issue.
