Working fine on linux.
if the characters gets stuck in walking animation during coversations just press the turbo mode button.
Works perfectly out of the box
Some occasional crashes, but that probably also exists on PC
GOG Version Installed with Steam using Proton-Experimental. Videos require using Protontricks to Install AMSTREAM and LAVfilters with all default settings. Plays perfectly on max settings at 1080p docked.
DO NOT install QUARTZ using Protontricks, the game will crash on videos.
Works straight out the box but FMV videos wont play.
Lowered TDP limit to 7w. Got around 7 hours of battery.
Played through the entirety of Trails of Cold Steel on Steam Deck OLED and had a smooth and pleasant experience. I didn't have some of the problems listed by other users like crackling audio after exiting sleep mode but I did experience two crashes right before saving the game (the game saves before crashing so it's nothing serious).
My suggestion is to lower the TDP to 7w and set the fps limit to 45, great battery life and performance.
Runs better on linux
This game ran terribly on windows. On linux, it runs beautifully out of the box, including not having the obnoxious menu lag I experienced on windows.
Full playthrough with a steam controller. Everything worked perfectly.
The default controller configuration is bad though, as it makes your character slow down to a halt with diagonal movement with the analogue stick. This is fixed by setting the deadzone shape as square in the controller settings. After that the movement works as it should.
Set the game frame rate to 30 or 60 FPS and you're good to go
The problem I faced on my previous reports solved by changing the frame rate
Using SenPatcher to fix small issues in the game
Sometimes the characters keep walking in place and preventing scenes to continue. Minimizing and reopening the game solves the problem
Played through all the game with SenPatcher + HD Texture Pack without any problems
Used protontricks to run SenPatcher to be able to apply the texture pack.
Runs perfectly out of the box.
No issues after 30 hours. No tinkering required. Default settings.
Just changed to Proton 7.0-4. Works flawlessly, I finished the game with no crashes. Videos play normally, everything working
Running great on Deck, even with SenPatcher.
Game is running great from the start. I got crackling sounds at one point once in more than +10 hours (and it disappeared without even restarting). Crashes seems to occur when you are leaving sleeping mode from other reports.
- Note that you can apply both ToCS HD Texture Pack v6.10 and SenPatcher without issue. This will get you better textures and some QoL features like no more fade to black screen during Turbo Mode. In Desktop Mode, you will have to copy and overwrite the files in the Trails of Cold Steel folder. For SenPatcher, you will have to add it to the Steam Library as a new separate game in Desktop Mode. Then launch it with Proton Experimental. You will have to find the Trails of Cold Steel folder and select the game launcher (this can be tricky as the patcher is seeing many roots for your device). I got an error at first when I started the patch process but it went well in the end.
Random crashes after manually saving (siving still sucessful, so no progress lost) and at certain area transitions during story sections. Maybe one every 1-3 hours.
1-3 hours is an average sometimes the crashes happen more often, somtimes I could also play 8 hours without one. As you know that usually (some exceptions but much less frequent) they happen after saving the game and there is no lost progress i still enjoyed the game.
Laptop preset got ~6h of playtime
Sometimes after sleep sound become borked. Game restart fixes it.
Works very well with the latest version of proton (7.0-2 at time of writing)
The controller layout configuration tool is a little wierd - it supports controllers, but you will probably want to use the mouse using the Steam button + the right trackpad.
The game will crash sometimes when coming out of sleep mode.
Only issue I ram into was that the game would sometimes crash when exiting sleep mode on the deck. Other than that, no issues so far!
Works great with minimal configuration
The config tool opens on first launch. The only changes I made were: no brand intros, no intro movie, and some minor graphical tweaks like turning on shadow smoothing.
The game worked very well. Just follow the instructions Alex and others mentioned to fix the cut scenes.
Certain cut scenes in this game do not automatically play (you will be left at a black screen with music playing). To fix this, use the following command Alex mentioned in his review: protontricks 538680 amstream quartz lavfilters Alternatively, just press the ENTER key upon getting stuck at the black screens that result from this bug.
In my 80+ hours of game play, on 3 occasions when saving, the game crashed; that said, each save that resulted in a crash was successful, so I never lost any progress.
needs protontricks 538680 amstream quartz lavfilters
in order for videos to work in 6.3-7. GE does not need this but has crashes
Occasionally crashes on proton-ge-6.20 and 6.19 no crashes yet on vanilla
All movies can work by installing the following extras
protontricks 538680 amstream quartz lavfilters
Workaround for "cp: cannot create regular file '...quartz.dll': Permission denied"
trash ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/538680/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows/sys*/amstream.dll
trash ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/538680/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows/sys*/quartz.dll
Also see https://github.com/AdmiralCurtiss/SenPatcher/releases which can fix turbo mode by removing skip.
6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
On vanilla Valve Proton movies were borked (like while traveling via train), but switching to the newest Glorious Eggroll fork of Proton removed these issues
Proton version: Proton-6.16-GE-1
The game crashes immediately with RADV driver. AMDVLK works perfectly.
The game works with videos now, but they start paused and you have to press enter to unpause them.
6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
With this version of Proton I don't even need to install anything else to be able to play the video. It's just that you need to "start" it manually by pressing Esc in my case.
I just selected "Skip Intro" and "Skip All Videos" in the launcher, the game just works.
Once you install K-Lite and Qwartz (I used protontricks) and disable the intro movie, the rest of the game works perfectly.
Install Qwartz and K-Lite Codec Pack
Silent Crash on Startup
Steam begins to load the game but silently crashes in the background.
Several tweaks needed through protontricks; K-Lite Codec, LAV Filters, Quartz.dll
5.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
I didn't test know how other window managers react, but with Gnome Wayland videos have focusing issue. When the game plays video, screen seems to lose focus and turns black. However when the game is refocused by any means, for example turning Steam's overlay on and off by Shift-Tabbing, the video starts playing. After video ends, there is no issues.
6.8-GE-1 crashes when trying to use configuration on launch. Default version doesn't, but with default version videos have to be disabled, because they crash. You can try saving configuration with default version and then playing with GE.
Minor video playback issues but otherwise runs flawlessly without tweaks.
Videos do not play properly out-of-the box (black or static-like screen during playback), but aren't necessary to enjoy the game - OP/ED movies and videos showing train routes in cross-country travel are all that's affected. Video playback may not start until a button is pressed on the keyboard (mouse/gamepad won't cut it), leaving the false impression that the game is stuck or hung on a black screen.
Videos do work with Proton-GE, but GE 6.0+ silently fails when running the launcher. The launcher creates a config file necessary for the game to run; you can switch to GE after generating the config, but be careful about switching prefixes as the config file isn't backed up to the cloud. Alternatively, both videos and the launcher work with GE 5.21.
Played for roughly 50 hours so far with only one crash; the timing of the crash seems more like an engine bug than a wine/Proton issue, but I can't say as much for certain.
(Reported experimental version: Proton Experimental as of 2021/04/29)
Strangle frame limiter
Rare stuttering (not sure if present under Windows)
Occasionally, between transitions, the game would just show a black screen, but alt-tabbing out and back in would nudge the game along. Also, between some transitions and prior to the main menu, I would get some odd screen with colour samples (I assume) covering the top of the screen. Neither of these are game breaking but worth mentioning, none the less.
Works flawlessly at max settings. No degradations noticed.
There are scattered, multicolored graphics at the top portion of the screen on startup, but this disappears as soon as the opening sequence starts.
This game worked for me on Proton Experimental
. I tried out Proton GE 6.5 (as it is my go to version) and Proton 6.3 and the game just silently crashes on launch.
No Cutscenes Video
Aside from the intro and ending cutscenes, the technical experience is flawless.
There is an opening anime cutscene, and ending credits that only play audio. My laptop showed no video, my Desktop sometimes showed graphical glitches. Checking Youtube reveals they have nothing important going on. The game runs oherwise flawlessly (and performs better than I would expect from my laptop.)
Runs great on opensuse tumbleweed, just remember to install all the codecs for the distro
Great out the box, if you use Glorious Eggroll. Use the fixes listed below if you use regular proton
Proton GE-5.9-5-EST
Can run in max settings no problem. Had trouble getting this game started in tumbleweed so I switched to Fedora. If you are having trouble getting into the main screen I would put skip the intro and logos in the menu. Should be able to finish the game without getting into any issues.
Did the following through protontricks: installed quartz, LAV Filters 0.74.1. I needed to change the version of windows to 10 to get LAV Filters to install properly. At the end of LAV Filters install, I made sure to check the configuration options for audio and video, and turned everything on. Also unchecked the box that said to use Microsoft codecs for wmv. After that, everything worked perfectly. Intro movies played, and played through the prologue until I hit the next video. It played perfectly, and then continued on with the game.
I tried a few other combinations of dlls and codecs, but anything more than quartz + LAV Filters crashed on video playback.
Controller only worked when the game was launched fullscreen from Big Picture Mode. Using XBox 360 wired controller.
Game only works when using Proton 4.11.XX. I used 4.11.12 for my time playing. Though the configuration tool doesn't work with 4.11.XX from what I tested, and I had to set the game to use Proton 5.1-GE-1 to use the configuration tool, then switch back to 4.11.12 to actually play the game.
As others have mentioned, you will need to install K-Lite Basic (I used protontricks in GUI mode for this. I copied the file over to the prefix's steamuser desktop, then installed K-Lite from the "Select the default Wine prefix" | "Run explorer" option in protontricks.
And of course you'll need to add quartz.dll by way of "Select the default wine prefix" | "Install a Windows DLL or component" options.
Once all of that was done, the game ran quite well. I have yet to beat it, but I'm about 15 hours in with this setup and it's going well.
After installing k-lite basic and quartz (quartz from winetricks) it did work. However game only launches on normal proton. Trying to launch it with lutris proton, tkg proton or glorious eggroll (ge) proton will fail to launch or game will stuck at black screen. You have to choose "Proton 4.11" option. I am playing the game without steam
