Runs as good as the native version out of the box, but you need to give it a few minutes to compile all the shaders (it will be laggy until then). You have to enter your login credentials every time you start the game (and you have to type them manually because the login form doesn't support copying and pasting). If you check "Remember password" or "Auto login" it will throw the connection error. Also, the game froze one time, when I clicked "Exit" after a battle. I had to kill the process.
Runs perfectly with great performance. The only issue I noticed so far is the small intro videos in the character selection menu don't work (there's just a black rectangle). It can probably be fixed by installing some codec libraries, but it's such a small issue that I don't really care.
The issue with text input has been fixed in 4.11-3. The game now runs as well as it used to. The intro videos still won't play and others report that voice chat doesn't work (though I didn't check it myself).
Poor performance after the Update 28
I started to get low FPS after the Update 28. The Hot Fix 2 that is said to fix poor performance on some cards didn't help me in my case.
Works great
Occasional crackling inside menus and during mission loading.
I take my previous report back, since the performance issue wasn't Proton-specific. And the Hot Fix 3 fixed it anyway.
As someone noted, an updated OpenGL renderer (dxglr20
) is required for the best performance. You need to specify it in the rendering device selection.
I use xgamma
to adjust brightness (e.g. xgamma -gamma 1.5
), as in-game brightness setting doesn't work and it's too dark by default.
I had to change texture color depth to from 16 to 32 in the game settings, which makes a big visual difference.
I also bound F12
to another key and disabled it in System/User.ini
to be able to make screenshots with Steam comfortably. This is totally optional though.
Pressing Alt
(default binding for Strafe) breaks mouse input. You have to change the window focus in order to fix it. I recommend binding Strafe to another key.
Works out of the box
The game couldn't exit cleanly, I had to kill the process. Other than that, it runs great.
I get a huge frame rate drop on entering the High Concept Miscellaneous Interactions department. Disabling Esync seems to fix it, but I still was getting drops from time to time.
Also, I hadn't been able to get the achievement "Just Starting Out" until I disabled the Steam Overlay and picked up the recorder at the start. Maybe it's an issue with the game itself and not Proton.
In order to get the game started correctly, pass your screen resolution through the launch options as follows: "%command% -w WIDTH -h HEIGHT" (without the quotes).
Loading times can be very long (up to several minutes). Also, clicking "Options" in the main menu crashes the game. Other than that, the game runs perfectly.
Works perfectly
Keyboard input isn't working when a gamepad (Xbox 360) is connected. Not sure if it's Proton-specific.
Completed the game, obtained all the achievements.
I played just a little, but the game ran perfectly so far. I only had to disable the post-processing effects (especially motion blur) to gain Windows-near performance. Also, my Xbox 360 controller works perfectly in the game.
Runs perfectly out of the box, but I can't interact using my Xbox 360 controller, only walk.
Too slow
The game is too slow for me for some reason. It takes forever just to get to the main menu. Once in the main menu, I get a slide show at something like 0.2 FPS. I have to kill the game after that, because it accepts no input at such framerate.
I tried various tweaks like disabling d3d11
, d3d10
and esync
. Using d9vk
just gives an empty error message.
Works well
- There are some minor glitches with shadows, but it's not very noticeable.
- Characters in dialogues don't have anti-aliasing. I'm not sure if it's Wine/Proton issue only or Windows has it too.
- The intro video doesn't play. But you can just watch it with your media player if you want:
data/video/intro_rus_field.wmv
.
- The game doesn't seem to have options for all resolutions. If that's the case for you, set your resolution manually in the config file:
data/config.cfg
. - I have better experience with fullscreen disabled. You can disable it in the config file.
- The game doesn't adjust its resolution on window size change.
Proton 4.18
seems to fix the issue I had with this game. d9vk
still doesn't work though.
A follow-up
The game doesn't start in fullscreen for me anymore. I get an empty error message, just like when you try to use d9vk
. Edit the game's config file to disable fullscreen.
Most keys stop working when you load a previously saved game. In order to fix this, you need to start a new game first, and then load your save. You need to do that once every time you start the game.
Some keys can still occasionally refuse to work, which is annoying, but doesn't make the game unplayable. You can try to reload a save to fix it.
The problem with input I described in this report.
I suddenly started to experience FPS hitches, but Feral's gamemode
seems to fix the problem.
The game crashed for me several times, so I suggest you save more often just in case. Setting anti-aliasing to 16x seems to cause crashes too.
Fixes for some issues I encountered when further playing the game. Refer to my previous reports for more info. Also, I got Proton version wrong in my previous report, it's 4.11-8
.
Very low frame rate (3-4 FPS) on game restart or after a teleportation (just try to jump into the water for several times). Also, one time there was literally no level, my character just kept appearing in the air and falling into the water to his death.
Everything is good, except for stuttering
Frame rate is great but the game stutters every few seconds which makes playing experience very uncomfortable.
The game didn't load properly the first time I started it, after restart everything was normal. There's crackling sound after you finish the game and credits won't show. Other than that, the game runs perfectly. I got all the achievements.
I get the following error:
"Unofficial modification of MinerWars has crashed, please contact creator of this modification and send him logfile: C:\users\steamuser\Application Data\MinerWars\MinerWars.log".
Here is the logfile: https://pastebin.com/raw/40GQgzQD
Doesn't work even after SE tweaks
I tried to apply the tweaks described in this guide for Space Engineers because it seems to use the same engine. But I still get the error from my previous report.
Works great
The game starts in a window. I can't switch to fullscreen using window manager's shortcut, but it is possible in game settings. Beware, there's a quick flash when switching to fullscreen and every time you load a game.
Runs perfectly out of the box. I don't have the issue with save files. I also use Dash Faction for widescreen support (there's a guide in Steam which describes how to install it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1748240979).
Played through the whole game very comfortably. Performance is great. The only issue is a weird graphical glitch - whenever you look straight up at the sky, you see a black area. This isn't really a big issue, since you don't need to look at this angle very often, but it was sometimes annoying when fighting flyers.
I tried various tweaks (including running the game in DX9 mode), but none of them helped. The Re-Mars-tered Edition has this issue as well.
The game itself runs perfectly but it is unplayable with mouse. It starts spinning like crazy after you change window focus or interact with game menus. There isn't such an issue if I switch to my Xbox 360 controller.
gamemoderun %command%
A dozen of empty Origin windows spawn on game startup. It's annoying, but it's not game-breaking, when the game starts in fullscreen it covers them. I use i3-gaps if this matters.
When entering the pause menu the game starts to lag, only a restart fixes the problem.
The game itself is playable, but not being able to enter the pause menu without huge performance degradation almost ruins the experience.
