Native version of this game is seriously underdeveloped, runs awful and has basically nothing but the basic graphics of the Windows version (e.g. there is no ground foliage).
Luckily running the Windows version through proton seems to work great other than the occasional stuttering from dynamic LOD being a bit slow. I believe was an issue in the original game anyhow it is just more noticeable as it has to now go through the proton and vulcan API layer.
Runs, uplay starts (however separate for each game). As with all uplay games you need to start once, quit uplay and then re-run.
Game also does not exit as proton thinks uplay is the game, need to kill uplay after exiting.
Also cannot move refresh rate past 60hz but this is a proton-wide issue anyhow.
Most of the issues are with uplay and it sounds like a proton patch needs to create a symbolic link to a general uplay instance for each appid as well as fixing other issues.
Runs, however performance is seriously impacted vs running it natively on Windows to the point where it is almost unplayable (under 10fps).
Use to be issues with Microsoft fonts needed to be added manually to the proton instance however now runs perfectly on the newest version of proton.
Using windows version. Works until loading a game, then when I press play it simply sits at the loading menu.
Seems to work out of the box.
Didn't play through past initially starting a new game however so far haven't experienced any issues..
Performance issues (possible same as Windows) as well as other problems. Going to wait for game updates and new proton patches..
No voices from AI other than main character and contacts on phone.
Dynamic resolution seems to be malfunctioning on character skin and clothes causing artifacts.
Playing at 5k / high, with significant performance problems. Game struggles to get above 30fps so going to try lower.
Low Framerate and stuttering
Doesn't seem to detect ray tracing support despite having a capable card. I have gotten this working on other games so not sure why it outright thinks its the wrong card..
Not that it could handle it by the looks of things!
I tried this on low settings at 1440p and seemed to have an easier time on my old GTX 1080..
Original missing audio issues for linux fixed in proton experimental.
I have heard issues about crackling so I would start with the following launch options to fix:
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
(can also add "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1" as well, not sure if this helps).
Was originally trying to run at 5k (rather enthusiastic of me). For some reason the jump from 4k -> 5k gives you a 50% fps hit so I have reduced this down to 4k.
One other thing, no platform on earth at the moment can run this game at 4k Ultra so you NEED to turn on dynamic resolution scaling at the bottom of the graphics menu. Now running at 4k @ ultra with 50->100% resolution scaling (so worst is 2k) at 60fps with the VERY occasional dip to 58ish.
Graphical bugs seemed to have been fixed in last update so I can say it works very well now through Proton.
Not usable in some areas on NVIDIA cards because of black screen issue.
Screen blanks on NVIDIA cards in certain quests/areas (apparently its due to lack of support for a proton feature):
You can see everything again by pressing tab and scanning but not exactly ideal as it immediately goes black again after you exist scan mode.
Tried to run at 5k (was very optimistic), couldn't get more than ~50fps so went to 4k. Lack of NVIDIA DLSS support in proton (which they kind of expect you to use) means I am running at around 50-60fps.
Game fails to start complaining of missing DLL
On launch presented with an error stating it cannot find the DLL "api-ms-win-core-systemtopology-l1-1-0.dll".
Tried various techniques to fix this including installing vcrun2019 with winetricks.
I have been unable to find references to this package in any packages that could be installed sadly and seems to be part of the core ms win32 libs.
"Native" version is poorly optimized and has a lot of single-thread bound processes (like loading the actual game).
Seems to be slight lag when turning when exclusive fullscreen is on. Play in borderless/non-exclusive fullscreen..
Playing at 5120x2160 maxed with frames at 60fps or just under. Overall very pleasant experience, especially after just trying Cyberpunk ;p ..
After following the instructions on https://github.com/redmcg/wine/wiki as suggested by a previous user (thanks btw :) ). I have ED Horizons running on highest (1.0 super sampling) with frame rates between 80-144fps.
All I can say though is make sure you read the instructions VERY carefully. I missed a precursor bit and it took me 3x longer than it probably should have.
The game is VERY slow to init shaders at the start and you may have to quit out after it has finished however I found everything was great after that.
Seems to have been broken after last patch however removing the proton prefix, re-running the game to re-create and then running winetricks and installing "dotnet40" seems to fix the issue.
Also made a script:

Issues after Sep 24th Update where game will not launch.
Fix is to replace DLL with custom one and adding dxvk.conf file under HITMAN2/Retail. However mine worked perfectly just adding the .conf file without swapping out the DLL as described here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2121#issuecomment-534727345 so I would say try just with the config file first and then swap in the DLL if no luck.
Works mostly fine out of the box for me except shift on the keyboard not working in-game however it works fine with the controller.
Shift buttons do not work for some reason so can't sprint or access suit upgrades.
So firstly the resolution is an issue apparently on proton and native windows PC's..
Fix to this is to change them manually in steamapps/compatdata/356190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/WB Games/Shadow of War/render.cfg (under ScreenHeight16by9 and ScreenWidth16by9).
However you NEED TO TURN OFF DYNAMIC RESOLUTION SCALING in the options menu as the game will detect your PC as severely lacking with buffer overflow values etc through proton and think it is running slow the entire time setting it to the minimum resolution.
Had to update the proton/wine instance using wine version 4.8 but worked great after that.
As reported by a number of users the newest updated seems to have broken this.
I am kicked to main menu between 1-15 seconds after joining a game.
Game files cannot be verified.
Rockstar launcher starts but fails to verify game files..
Cursor becomes invisible around (roughly) 15 minutes of game-play meaning the game has to be restarted.
What I tried to fix it:
- Disabled steam overlay.
- Ran game in fullscreen (not fullscreen-widowed).
This seems to be a worsened carry-over issue from Steel Division 1 where the cursor changed to the system cursor around about the same time.
Everything runs fine except for the cursor issues. However after a bit of testing a work around is to run the game in widowed mode and turn off mousetrap in game play options. Otherwise runs very well.
Using proton 4.11-9 and working perfectly, disappearing cursor bug is now solved.
One of my more regularly played games and can confirm it works perfectly out-of-the-box.
I can now confirm this runs perfectly on Proton 4.2-3 out-of-the-box. I am not sure this affects things but I would recommend however that users have faudio installed..
Native version has poor performance, frequent crashes on proton version.
The native version of this runs pretty poorly (sticks around 30fps for me). When I try to run the proton version but I get random crashes performing simple operations like changing the graphics settings.
When I do manage to get to even benchmarking the application and doesn't crash the benchmark appears to be running (I get an fps report from steam overlay with graphics card and CPU being utilized), hear sounds etc however all I see is the end of the loading screen and this never goes away..
Finding the sources of frequent crashes while starting battles was less than a fun experience.
Some base terrain textures appear as basic grey.
After A LOT of trial and error it seems that (for me at least) starting battles can sometimes crash the game if water quality is set to anything above high (everything else set to Ultra).
I did notice however that the graphics settings only registers half my video memory so not sure if this is a VRAM addressing issue. Ticking "unlimited video memory" seems to have no affect on crashes.

Windows client is A LOT more optimized then the native Linux one (50-60fps increase for me).
Issue is the game seems to be a bit unstable in Windows mode, mostly at the main menu. If desktop effects are enabled the screen will flash at the main menu and there is also stuttering lag that I have not been able to get rid off. Sometimes the game will also lock-up at the main menu if left to sit for too long. I keep a kill script on hand to force kill war thunder and then politely ask gaijin client to close..
Good news is once in the game everything seems to run very well. Advise for users I guess is if you want the FPS boost but are prepared to deal with these issues then go for proton. Otherwise stick with the native client.
