I had to disable ENBoost and OSAllocators
Turn off ENBoost in settings - optimization
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
With Proton 8.0-5 I noticed extreme graphics glitches in the desert area. Switching to Proton 9.0 (Beta) and lowering the blur quality in the enderal settings fixed this for me.
It seems no worse than on Windows, Enderal is a Skyrim mod after all.
It is also necessary to disable ENBoost in the optimization settings of the Enderal launcher. The game would crash otherwise.
Requires a launch option to start, otherwise the game crashes. Haven't experienced any problems after that.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
P.S. Game’s shadows are poorly optimized regardless of your OS and hardware, so I would recommend turning “Shadow Draw Distance” down.
Starts the game launcher application but fails to launch the game.
I only tried disabling the various optimizations in the launcher and switching to an older version of Proton. Unfortunately, this wasn't successful.
Disabled 'ENBoost', otherwise the game doesn't start.
Game starts with controller unselected, you need to use steam shortcuts to start a new game and enable controller in the options menu to use the controller layout.
40 hz and 540p with fsr for a solid 3+ hours
Need to use the touchscreen on the launcher.
Needs proton 6.3.8 to use controller layout.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Used game settings in main menu to do the following. Disabled Enboost, OSAllocators and Onetweak. Changed settings to 4+ cores and 8Gb RAM.
I tried various combinations with results ranging from no launch menu to Manjaro freezing completely (power button job - that's never happened before). The combination submitted here is what finally worked for me, i.e. got the game running. I haven't played much of the game yet but will report again if I run into any issues.
Incidentally it ran perfectly with a GTX 1060 Gb. My launch issues only started when I switched to an RX 6600 XT.
Borked
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Nothing suggested in the protondb page helped. I tried ~5 different proton versions, tried a new SKSE, nothing did it. I never even saw the start menu.
Works perfectly with Proton 6.3 - also I had to add PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% to the launch commands.
Crash on start from ENBoost eating up all your memory? Edit [...]/steam/steamapps/common/Enderal/enblocal.ini and disable ReduceSystemMemoryUsage. Ironic I know.
Save games will never be deleted. This may be a steamcloud integration issue.
Works great with Proton-5.13-6
Some flickering in on distant object (like trees) in the first play area only. After leaving the first area, all subsequent areas look good and were flicker free.
manually installed dxvk and removed the 2 existing directx files in directory as had tweaked ini files to allow for unlimited fps cap and using the dxvk or wine commands in steam results in a 60fps cap
Game fails to expand to the selected resolution. The menu comes up to start a new game but then it never loads after.
Other reports mentioned disabling ENBoost and OSAllocators but these are not in the launcher.
Audio crackles faintly, was able to resolve by tweaking in-game audio settings
Had to disable ENBoost to get the game running, otherwise TESV.exe tries to take up all available system memory before being killed by the kernel.
OneTweak and OSAllocators don't appear to cause any problems but I disabled them as well just to be safe.
Also, can only run at full screen. Other modes fail.
If the base game is shared, and the owner is signed in to steam, error "steam application load error 65635" comes up. This error should be changed to something more helpful, such as "Error 65635, the base game cannot be ran because game owner is signed in to steam."
Still runs perfectly on launch after full play-through of 200+ hours
Previous report stands and have now completed a full play-through of around 200+ hours with no major problems, using both keyboard/mouse and Steam Controller.
No launch commands required and no issues with launcher (just disabled ENBoost and OneTweak for my system). Did experience crackling audio on occasion but this seemed to coincide with a high OS audio level so simply tweaked system and game levels to optimum...but based on other reports looks like the following launch command may fix 'PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%'
Near enough perfect, and beats Skyrim for stability, bugs (a distinct lack of), story, character development and gameplay.
Full Screen, reduced resolution, was able to fully play at first.
Worked first few days. I'm 12 hours in, now get unexplained error "steam application load error 65635" verified files found 3 files, but issue persists.
I had to use the launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%". Then the launcher was actually able to start the game. Other tweaks as described in previous posts were unnecessary.
With the integrated Intel-graphics chip one should not expect to run this game with decent graphics settings, though.
No major problems
Sometimes crashing when changing locations
To start the game, you need to disable ENBoost and OSAllocators in the launcher.
Works fine. Perfomance on maxed out setting 120+fps
To select wxga resolution, chose "user defined" group instead of 16:9 It is possible to get that game to crash at startup by selecting wring "Optimization" options from the start menu config. However it worked fine for me after I just ignored those settings
The game crashed after the launcher, even though i followed the advice on https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/ I fixed this by setting the resolution from 2560x1440p to 1920x1080p
Crackling audio can be fixed by adding 'PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%' to launch options in steam
windowed mode doesn't work
crackling is fixed by enabling lutris option "reduce pulseaudio latency"
To start the game, you need to disable enboost and osallocator.

The audio is definitely unnerving by crackling way too often
Custom run file
Occasional audio crackling, barely noticeable
Occasional stutters
No guide was able to launch game
I used the guide provided here(https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/). It did not fix the game. After a bit of tinkering I was able to get to the launch menu, but that is as far as I was able to go. I also could not launch from lutris.
Works excellent out of the box
Small stutters
Game runs after minor tweaks thanks to this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/
But the launcher freezes when trying to optimize the game.
Confirmed working out of the box with Proton 5.0.9
It wouldn't launch with the latest version of proton, but it runs perfectly under 4.11-13 aside from a pop-up error message on boot. After clicking "ok" on the message, the game launches as normal.
I also needed to add the following to the game's launch options as per the community's suggestion to get it to boot: SteamGameId="72850" SteamAppId="72850" %command%
Stability is near perfect. In my >100 hours of gameplay, it's only crashed maybe 2 or 3 times. Unfortunately, it will only work in fullscreen mode, and it also records the gameplay hours on vanilla Skyrim too. So if I play an hour in Enderal, Steam will say I've also played an hour in Skyrim. Steam also won't track any of my in-game achievements, but that's not a big deal to me. There might be a fix for all of this, but this works great for me, and I am happy with the minimal amount of effort I had to put in to get it up and running.
The game only works in fullscreen. It won't launch in windowed mode.
Very sparse crashes --- 2 or 3 in my >100 hours of gameplay.
Works with some tweaking and a slight performance loss compared to Windows and sluggishness for the first hour
For some reason, My Games
is misnamed to my games
upon install which causes a Failure to initialize renderer
error, going to <steam directory>steamapps/compatdata/933480/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/
and renaming my games
to My Games
fixes the issue.
Making the symlinks specified in this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/
The issue went away after about an hour of playing
In the beginning, the game feels sluggish and slow, however FPS wasn't lower than 60. After about an hour of playing, the sluggishness went away
Launcher works, game crashes instantly
Everything works with the launcher, game on the other hand crashes immediately with "Failed to initialize renderer". Disabling the optimizations did nothing. Neither did messing around with the graphics settings.
The game runs great out of the box. It does have very infrequent small stutters though.
For the most part the game ran at 60 fps at all times. There were a few occasional small stutters. Nothing serious.
The first time I booted up the game it crashed but the second time I booted it I was able to play the game just fine for 2-3 hours with no crashes.
To be fair I do not know if the stuttering is caused by Proton since I have not tried playing this game on windows . But I would assume my 980 would be able to handle it at a stable 60 fps with no dips.
Now launches and runs perfectly on Proton 5.0-5 without any tweaks
Performance: Almost comparable to Skyrim but I had to reduce to 720p to get a reliable framerate in open areas. No major stuttering/freezes/crashes.
Tweaks: None required. Didn't need to change bDoDepthOfField=0 in the EnderalPrefs.ini to see underwater either. (The Enderal Launcher has highly customizable settings should you wish to optimise for your hardware).
Issues: None encountered after around 4 hours play. Note that game time for Enderal is logged against Skyirm in Steam UI corresponding to the TESV.exe running (while it looks like Enderal play time will correspond to time spent in the EnderalLauncher.exe before launch)
Verdict: Near enough perfect. Play it now.
Made symlinks as per the reddit thread here
Then, launching the game through Steam with launch options SteamGameId="72850" SteamAppId="72850" %command%
I wasn't able to see underwater, I was shown a solid blue-green screen. This was fixed by opening EnderalPrefs.ini
in the launcher and setting bDoDepthOfField=0
as per this post
Seems to run a little slower than on Windows. Shouldn't be a problem.
Opening the Settings menu in-game causes a crash when it attempts to save changes. Can still edit settings through the launcher.
I have so far played until washing up on the beach.
TBH I didn't try running this game out-of-the-box. Straight into the configuration many people mentioned.
Game so far seems to be working fine. An error message comes up when opening the launcher, but it still works.
Created the symlinks here: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/
Launch option: SteamGameId="72850" SteamAppId="72850" %command%
works with workaround from https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/ but it's bassicaly running without steam - no tracked time, no achievments etc.
Works perfect after these tweaks: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/
Finally! Works fine using this guide (had to change the paths in the syslinks for my setup): https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/ . And, bloody hell, this game's start is full on -- in a good way.
Used this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/csxaza/how_to_play_enderal_forgotten_stories_with_proton/ I was able to launch, get to the main screen, but when I tried to start a new game, I get this message: "You have encountered a problem which stopped the files from loading correctly. Usually, this problem occurs if the launcher doesn't have writing permission in certain folders which means that some files couldn't be edited or created. Make sure that the launcher isn't blocked by Windows or third party programs. It is important that the 'Enderal - ForgottenStories.esm' is highlighted in the 'Data Files' window of Enderal's launcher."
