Had to use Proton 5.13 to get the game running, after which the experience is flawless
With Proton 6.3 or Proton Experimental, the game will launch but freezes at splash screen
Works flawlessly with Proton 6.3-5 including multiplayer. I did use the multiplayer fix which can be found in previous reports.
The multiplayer fix is required to prevent desync issues during games:
cd ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/813780/pfx/drive_c/windows/system32
wget https://download.microsoft.com/download/9/3/F/93FCF1E7-E6A4-478B-96E7-D4B285925B00/vc_redist.x64.exe
sudo cabextract vc_redist.x64.exe
sudo cabextract a10
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER .
The game runs fine even after the October 5th "Halloween Event" update, but the multiplayer fix still needs reapplied every time the game (or Proton) updates.
Used to work, but now doesn't make it to the main menu
The game launches but all I get is "Failed to initalize graphics!"
The game works fine simply by downgrading to Proton 5.13.
Proton 6.3 and Experimental don't work as of this writing.
Cannot get past launcher, even with protontricks
Tried "protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10" (also vcrun2005 and dotnet20) as well as some launch options, but the game still crashes with "Failed to compile global shader"
Works perfectly, controller support included
Adding +r_swapinterval 0
to launch options seemed necessary to eliminate stuttering
Appears to work perfectly after performing ALL of these steps https://gist.github.com/Decclo/da097b504ccbc61514926ae2d96350ef
Tested on Steam Deck as well
Audio crackles faintly sometimes
Used latest Mesa and Proton Experimental. The game starts & runs fine but is only playable on this hardware at very lowest settings, 720p windowed, 30fps vsync
Audio crackles faintly, was able to resolve by tweaking in-game audio settings
Had to disable ENBoost to get the game running, otherwise TESV.exe tries to take up all available system memory before being killed by the kernel.
OneTweak and OSAllocators don't appear to cause any problems but I disabled them as well just to be safe.
protontricks 1151340 faudio
Missing audio initially, resolved by installing FAudio. Audio is still crackly sometimes but not bad.
Proton Experimental worked just fine after installing FAudio, I did not see a need to use GloriousEggroll. Performance was merely okay, 30-40fps which is probably expected given my hardware.
Runs perfectly fine out of the box, with some small exceptions:
- Pip-Boy radio will only play the first ~30 seconds of songs
- Alt+Tab necessitates restarting the game since the window cannot be refocused
I decided to take the following extra steps after installation:
- Use Proton 4.11 to prevent the Pip-Boy radio issue: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/356#issuecomment-685979535
- Reconfigure the game's WINEPREFIX to automatically capture mouse in fullscreen & emulate virtual desktop to prevent the Alt+Tab issue:
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/22380/pfx winecfg
- Install NVSE: https://github.com/xNVSE/NVSE
- Install NVAC: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635/
- Various INI tweaks according to personal preference, most people will want to disable mouse acceleration at least: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2476182078
This game runs great, with fewer crashes thanks to NVSE/NVAC, working Alt+Tab, and a working Pip-Boy radio!
Alt+Tabbing sometimes tanks fps until you restart the game
Game launches to a black screen and refuses to go any further unless PROTON_USE_WINED3D is passed to Proton
Crashed twice, both times while loading a level
Noticed some extra input latency in multiplayer games.
Steam Play runs better than the native port. More graphical options are available, and vsync actually functions when using Proton.
Freezes on "Connecting to Steam..." when trying to log in with an existing account.
Use PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
as launch arguments to prevent audio crackling
Both Proton Experimental and Proton 6.3 appear to cause graphical issues with lighting/shadows, resulting in some textures taking on a mottled black appearance. Downgrading to Proton 5.13 resolves these problems.
Works so well I actually thought it was native. No issues, flawless experience all the way through.
WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Alt+Tab results in black screen when using either exclusive or windowed fullscreen. True windowed mode avoids this.
Only hits 30 fps but that's probably because of my hardware. Note I'm using Proton Experimental but NOT the bleeding edge beta branch, haven't seen the need to switch to that (yet)
Game wouldn't even launch without the unofficial patch, previous reports have instructions for that
Tearing near the top of the screen, there are no vsync options in-game that I could find so I assume I'll just have to live with it
