Launcher works, game crashes instantly

Everything works with the launcher, game on the other hand crashes immediately with "Failed to initialize renderer". Disabling the optimizations did nothing. Neither did messing around with the graphics settings.

Runs perfectly when Steam is started from commandline
For some reason this game fails to load if I start Steam from it's .desktop file. Running steam from the terminal solves this problem. Never had a problem like this with any other game.
