It wouldn't launch with the latest version of proton, but it runs perfectly under 4.11-13 aside from a pop-up error message on boot. After clicking "ok" on the message, the game launches as normal.
I also needed to add the following to the game's launch options as per the community's suggestion to get it to boot: SteamGameId="72850" SteamAppId="72850" %command%
Stability is near perfect. In my >100 hours of gameplay, it's only crashed maybe 2 or 3 times. Unfortunately, it will only work in fullscreen mode, and it also records the gameplay hours on vanilla Skyrim too. So if I play an hour in Enderal, Steam will say I've also played an hour in Skyrim. Steam also won't track any of my in-game achievements, but that's not a big deal to me. There might be a fix for all of this, but this works great for me, and I am happy with the minimal amount of effort I had to put in to get it up and running.
The game only works in fullscreen. It won't launch in windowed mode.
Very sparse crashes --- 2 or 3 in my >100 hours of gameplay.
Game loads to menu, won't go beyond that
If I have Nehrim and Oblivion installed, I can get Nehrim to launch, but the game hangs after selecting "new game" so you can't actually play it. I tried to tweak everything I can think of in the launch options, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.
To at least launch the game, you have to launch Nehrim, use its menu to select Nehrim instead of Oblivion, then close the game, and then launch Oblivion. Oblivion will automatically run Nehrim leading you to the game's menu.
To play Oblivion again, you need to launch Nehrim and use that menu to select Oblivion. Then, close Nehrim and open Oblivion, and the game should launch as normal.
The game worked flawlessly out of the box for me. I have the graphical settings maxed out and the frame rate has never dropped apart from network related issues.
Overall, I have put nearly 300 hours into this game, more than 200 of which are on Linux. The game has crashed maybe 4 or 5 times in that whole time, and probably 2 of those times were on Windows, so I have not noticed any differences between native and Linux performance.
I also found how to get plugins working on Linux, and I went ahead and wrote out instructions a while ago over on the r/linux_gaming and r/LOTRO subreddits: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/dhtc19/how_to_use_pluginsskins_in_lotro_on_linux_using/
