I played through about a dozen missions without any problems. I tested a couple proton versions including the default "hotfix" version, and 9.0-4. Both worked fine. One minor issue is that there is some blinking during the introduction cinematic, but the rest of the cutscenes work perfectly. Widescreen resolution is not supported by the game itself, although other reports mention some tweaks that I did not try.

Played through 6 missions so far. Everything tested works great.

Not able to escape the gamescreen unless I close the game

The game doesn't support a lot of resolution options by default and none of them are widescreen, but you can set it to whaterver resolution/aspect ratio by editing the "autoexec.cfg" files as seen here: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Jedi_Knight_II_-_Jedi_Outcast#Widescreen_resolution
I recommend switching to OpenJK's native linux version, using Steam Tinker Launch to point to the new executable, no proton involved
Works Great

Game crashes immediately on startup, but works with OpenJK
Install openJK!

Runs perfectly out of the box
Game runs with proton experimental without additional configuration

Having to reset resultion every time is too much hassle and the mouse to joystick mapping is bad
Have to manually set Video Resolution every time I start the game or you get a weird frozen texture image instead of the game's normal video output

Ran ok the first time, but every subsequent time, after loading I'd just get a weird grey image like a zoomed in machine part. Very weird
Is Broke

Opening cut scene kept fading in only to go black and fade in again over and over again.
Connecting a controller or giving ANY input (controller or keyboard) while a controller was connected casued a system crash. Not just game crash, my entire system froze.
After playing the first segment of the game, the following cutscene completely froze and would not allow me to progress further.
This is an old game, and so some problems are expected. Sadly it seems that most of the fixes out there are Windows-specific. Maybe someone smarter than me can get this running properly but unfortunately I need to throw in the towel on this one, at least for now.
Weird articacts in the main menu
whatever resolution you set, it seems to default to a much lower one and needs to be rescaled by the system
Whatever resolution you set, it seems to default back to 800x600 and needs to be upscaled by the system. Recommend you set scaling mode to FSR.
Initially you wont be able to interact with the game. Set to community control layout.
Perfect out of the box
Needed other controls
Works fine. Had a "blinking" in the intro video but nothing later on.
I had to select an older version of proton because by default the game was hanging. After that and trying unsuccessfully to launch the game, I reset proton 7.0.4 and the game launched after a couple of tries, then launches each time.
Changed L4 and R4 to jump and use, and enabled gyro on right stick or pad touch
Turn TDP down to 5 watts
Even in mouse mode left analog worked very poorly. Had to play with touch pad and/or gyro
Works out of the box.

Played on Steam Deck.
The game installed, booted, and made it to the main menu with no issues. Controls did not work at all. Had to use trackpad as mouse to play the game. Was able to start the first few minutes of the campaign and no issues with the game or audio.
Not properly playable on Steam Deck out of the box without heavily modifying the controls or use of external keyboard/mouse (I'm assuming it's playable with mouse and keyboard - did not test).
Textures forced to 16-bit and not look good.
For using 32-bit textures change in file GameData/base/jaconfig.cfg
at line seta r_ignorehwgamma
value "0" to value "1".
Side issue is that changing brightness is not work - manually set in this file at line seta r_gamma
value "1.0" to "1.6" (lighter) or other you prefer.
Sometimes at start in fullscreen main menu corrupted - to fix just Alt-Enter to window mode and then back to fullscreen.
First cut scene periodically fades/flashes - to fix just press Enter to skip first video with Star Wars story text.
Played with Proton 6.3-8.
PS. Played first mission without issues under Wine 6.0.2 (not Proton) directly using Windows binary from project https://github.com/JACoders /OpenJK
Works good but textures 16-bit only
Textures are 16-bit regardless setting in game.
Sometimes at start in fullscreen main menu corrupted - to fix just Alt-Enter to window mode and then back to fullscreen.
First cut scene periodically fades/flashes - to fix just press Enter to skip first video with Star Wars story text.
Played with Proton 6.3-8.
Using WineD3D, noDX10, noDX11 flags not fix textures issue.
Using Proton 5.x, 4.x gets corrupted menu in fullscreen but in window 5.x works fine. Issue 5.x/4.x - can't change brightness at all.
Can play first missions without issues under Wine 6.0.2 (not Proton) directly using Windows binary from project - https://github.com/JACoders /OpenJK
I used proton 4.11-13, experimental and the latest had graphical issues.
Singleplayer campaign runs great as of now, i could not see any servers on multiplayer.
Great experience.
Runs flawlessly out of the box

It's pretty good out of the box
Color depth seems to be 16-bit even when I set it to 32-bit
Mouse sensitivity is constantly changing
On Windows it crashes after 20 or so loads, on Linux it doesn't. So it's even better in some cases.
Multiplayer with bots works 100%
the main menu was a little glitchy
This runs flawlessly, should be platinum
The first ingame cutscene kept repeating a fade-in for the whole cutscene. Every other cutscene has been fine
Game runs fine out of the box minus a few inconveniences.
Brief whitescreen on screen transitions, e.g. when starting/ending a cutscene, loading into a level.
Need to edit a config file for widescreen resolution.
Game controllers don't work, but if you play on M&K, it works flawlessly.
My Xbox controller would have crazy sensitivity levels, and it's axes would drift, reducing gameplay to just watching a pixelated, rotating skybox.
There was some weird button mapping as well, such as the X button accepting menus, instead of the A button. No way to change it, as far as I know.
Game is working perfectly fine without any issues on Proton Experimental.
Opens black screen annoyingly hard to kill it
Works well with 144hz even with multiple different monitors at different refresh rates with i3wm, no issues to report from my experience.

Works well.
Played with Proton 5.0-7
