PA is one of the most unstable games ever made - It's nearly impossible to tell what's from the compatibility layer and what's just the game.
Had to roll back to an older version of Proton, nothing new seemed to work. 7.0-6 seemed to work fine. Anything around that range should be OK, though I didn't fully test the limits.
Needs the launch options, else your screen will get flooded with a font sheet at roundstart.

SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
Crackling in menus especially when the planets are being generated, in game it's pretty good however
Coherent UI Flickering in some areas of the game
Parsely error happens sometimes even with newest NVIDIA drivers

The game itself is good. Used to work natively on Linux, but as of now requires some tinkering to get it working, still has bugs sometime.
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
UI is slower than what it used to be.
On other Proton versions ,the game would freeze just when the planet system would finish loading, unable to select the commander nor start playing.
When running Native version as of now, I am getting the "Sage" error, which supposedly means graphics driver not up to date, although I made sure they are.
On I tried Proton 9.0, Proton Experimental, GE Proton 8.32 and GE Proton9.2 but the game would essentially freeze just after loading the system.

i mean i played it for some hours now in single-player but the occasional whitescreen starts to bother since i cant progress from there
when loading the planet its white or black sometimes
in the galactic war exporer but ingame its great

it crash when it try to launch
As user [Steffo](https://www.protondb.com/users/914977919) has reported, game doesn't run on Native. More details below
%command% --coherent-options="--single-process"
The widnow instantly closes whenever I launch it. If I run it with the launch options, the game doesn't close but it still shows a black window.
Digging under the logs, I got the following message:
ERROR Planetary Annihilation: Fatal error 'parsley': User interface acceleration crashed. Please make sure you have the latest graphics drivers for your system.
Do note I am running on the latest Nvidia drivers, on an Nvidia laptop with OPTIMUS forcing the entire session to be rendered using the GPU. I also have a second monitor, but I've tried running the game with only one monitor.
The game runs well and would expect many to enjoy playing this on the deck. But there is a lot of interface for a typical gamer and deck.
I turned off the steam overlay
I expanded functionality. Will look to contribute back.
When zooming a planet from solar system it would jump me to the sun.
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
crash chance at the beginning of every game
Game crashes in lobbies with too many planets (but probably does the same thing in the Windows version)
Launch with SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
.
Without the custom launch options, the UI does not render.
Native version is unplayable.
Wasted 2+ hours trying to understand why it won't start, then gave up.
My discoveries
- you definitely need
libcurl-gnutls.so.4
installed - you definitely need to
LD_PRELOAD
the librarylibfreetype.so.6
--coherent-options="--single-process"
helps resolving a GPU crash but still gets a black screen
By default, I assume the Deck installs the Native version. Only thing I customized was ui scaling. Worked absolutely fine with no issues whatsoever when starting and playing through a 4-player AI skirmish. Performance, controls, graphics, and stability were all what I expected.
Multiplayer is not any more broken than on Windows.
Proton experimental, even with flags recommended here was hit or miss, some matches would work just fine, some would crash on start (and everything in between, broken HUD etc.)
Sometimes crashes in the main menu after starting the game
Ranked (online) worked great
Had to tick "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool" to not crash after starting
Possible to play Galactic War but that is maybe 6h. worth of gameplay. Multiplayer is most of this game, and it's mostly unplayable.
Prevent a black screen by enabling fullscreen under ".local/Uber Entertainment/Planetary Annihilation/window_settings.json", following forum recomendations.
- Menus not appearing sometimes during gameplay.
- The whole map whitening out, forcing you to wait for a while until color comes back.
Multiplayer custom map: the whole map can be whited out, making it near impossible to play.
Multiplayer 1v1 matchmaking is unable to create a game. Custom game can be joined, but graphical glitches make it virtually unplayable.
Videos won't play.
Forced Steam Linux runtime was not needed in Ubuntu, but it was necessary in Arch-based: Manjaro, Garuda.
Some graphical glitches can be avoided by disabling HDR in game settings.
For a game that is mostly multiplayer, the multiplayer bugs are a deal-breaker.
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
Haven't tried multiplayer, but chat's up and no server errors at launch. Single player works fine. May have to dial in graphics
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
Native does not work at all, even on Ubuntu. Tried, but it wasn't functional. However Proton Experimental with the Launch Options stated worked like a charm on Steam Deck!
Make certain you run in Desktop Mode at least once, then you can launch in Game Mode without problems.
I managed to get Multiplayer working by referencing the /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificate.crt inside the SSL_CERT_FILE variable as mentioned elsewhere here in ProtonDB.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 required or else you're going to get GFX tearing. Enjoy!
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
Game is dark on start, but can be fixed by exiting and re-entering fullscreen (Alt+Enter)
Game is not logging into server, despite using SSL_CERT_FILE in launch options
Native version is unplayable due to main menu being not responsive. Game works under proton, but game is not connecting to servers, so playing multiplayer is impossible.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
At game start screen sometimes turns completely white (workaround: Alt+Return)
Cannot connect to Online Servers due to missing/ invalid SSL Certificate.
Cannot login to PA online service due to missing SSL Certificates.
Missing SSL Certificate on Ubuntu 21.10. Option "SSL_CERT_FILE=" mentioned by forum users does not work (file is missing and could not be found on the internet).
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3" SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt
Screen turns white sometimes when dropping to a planet, alt+enter a few times seems to fix it.
Certificate options does not seem to help, i might have put it in wrong.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=1"
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/386070/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/Uber Entertainment/Planetary Annihilation/window_settings.json
Set fullscreen to false (though it seems like it reverted itself, or might not be needed)
Also turn off steam overlay, possibly need to disable desktop game theatre.
I set the process limit to 1 where others were recomending 3, also not sure if that was needed or if my computer is just starchy

Main Menu is broken.
Worked fine for many years. Stopped working three weeks ago (maybe this is related to a Steam update that came at that time). As was already mentioned in the discussion, the main menu is now completely unresponsive, no mouse clicks are accepted. Had to use the task manager in order kill the game.
"legacy" beta
Just one online replay.

Native version doesn't work; the game doesn't registers any inputs
You can't use the native version on some versions of Linux (In my case, Fedora 35) because the game doesn't register any inputs. Also using the Steam Linux Runtime doesn't help.
You can try Proton 7.0 using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
but you'll run into SSL Certificate errors that block all multiplayer content.
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt %command%
Unable to sign in error
Didn't work
Native game runs great*
On AMD graphics it will glitch but runs fine on lowest graphics settings
If you are using AMD graphics you need this command in steam properties
SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt %command%
This was provided by their website https://planetaryannihilation.com/support/linux/
Nvidia graphics runs with no issues
added --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
option
Sometimes the game is all white or all black (aside from UI), to fix:
- press alt+enter a couple of times, to switch from fullscreen to windowed and back
- if it still does not work, try switching virtual desktops if you have them (I use qtile)
Tried the given fix for ssl certificates, but it did not work.
Ran flawlessly after some tinkering
Had to force compatibility use of Steam Linux Runtime, and use in launch options PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

Except for the fact that online multiplayer doesn't work. The local session did not cause any problems. And we had fun.
In about 2 hours there were 3 times strange audio errors (unsynchronized and fragmented) that disappeared after a few seconds.
Had to use the following startup options:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
FPS In game: 90-120. Sometimes the FPS drops to 60, but never less. Played with the preset medium variant of the graphics settings.
Requires a very specific setup, which is comprised of: Proton 5.0-10 and the command line PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3"
Very mild texture artifacting, very occasional and barely noticeable.
After each match, the game will not return to menu, you have to close the game by alt-tabbing and using the "Stop" button on steam or a task manager.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 is required to run, --coherent-options="--renderer-process-limit=3" (the "s are necessary) will limit CoherentUI to only spawning 3 rendering processes, otherwise it will go absolutely nuts and tank your performance by spawning upwards of 30 processes in very rapid succession, none of which are closed at any point. You can replace the 3 with the number of cores you have -1 to attempt to improve performance. With these command line arguments the game is playable for a single match, after which it will refuse to return to menu. Game is still enjoyable despite that.
