If you use CachyOS and you are running with proton-cachyos as your compatibility choice after Steam Play, it will run fine.
Short, sharp noise, intermittent
If you use Proton Experimental and it updates to a new version, your saves will no longer launch. I reverted to Proton 8.0-2 from experimental and they worked. 8.0-2 automatically updating to 8.0-3 did not impact the saves.
underrail works on both fine on Steam Proton and GE Proton but ive seen about 7-9% average lower CPU draw on GE
I had encountered two specific issue that were on my side. Cloud save were not working due to enforcing two different version of proton on two computer (each working fine).
Rigth click a little buggy when fullscreen on a tiling manager with a resolution ratio different that the one of the computer (Missclik during the configuration, it happens)
Changed D pad to specific GUI options, and changed the right stick to have a scroll wheel functionality instead of mouse movement.
30 fps cap
Could not load a save game on PC if the save was created on my Steam Deck.
Sometimes when the game launches it sits with a black screen until the game is restarted.
The save game bug is a pretty significant one for me. I am unable to move my characters between devices due to Proton "bricking" the save game for windows machines. I saw a similar report on the steam discussion forums here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/250520/discussions/0/5363238800592299214/ and it seems that this issue cropped up in June of 2022.
Did encounter an initial black screen on first launch, exited and restarted the game and it worked just fine.
Out of the box with Proton 7.0.1
Latest update seemed to fixed the major issues for the steam deck and thus proton. Ran everything perfectly fine with default settings, even with overlay on. Didn't try big battles, but running around the the first station, saving, menus, were all fine and without any slowdowns whatsoever.

Just followed the instructions here https://steamcommunity.com/app/250520/discussions/0/2747650363465250646/
like others said, game does not close Underrail.exe after quitting make sure to do that manually.
Game ran out of the box ok with latest Proton GE. Adding dotnet40 and xna40 did not have any noticeable impact on slowdowns.
Game only works in fullscreen. In windowed mode, edge scrolling does not work properly and will have mouse control issues. When Alt-Tabbing, the mouse is restricted to the primary monitor. After returning to the game from Alt-Tabbing, it will occasionally break the mouse controls, not allowing any clicking in the game and will require the game to be restarted.
Slowdowns occur at seemingly random intervals. Especially when mousing over and highlighting items.
The game is fully playable, but with caveats

Mouse behavior with cursor over in-game objects
I had problem with install dotnet40 and xna40 through protontricks, but I did install it through wine, so I can play by run 'wine underrail.exe' in-game folder. But in this case steam didnt tracking my progress and achieves so I make symlink on wine prefix folder, and it works well under steam as well

Works quite fine if set-up the right way.
I had to switch to full screen tomake the mouse work propoerly, could be caused by steam compositor. Hangs on exit.

Yes if you look at what other people(previous reports) have done to get this game running without any sign
I learnt it the hard way.
Savegames are kept in the prefix dir, meaning if a update comes to Proton or you update/reinstall the game your savegames are gone. This happens with all games not supporting Steam Cloud saves.
To alleviate this problem symlink your savegame folder somewhere else. I also just locked the game to a Proton version other than experimental in Steam (currently 6.3). And I'm keeping it that way until something breaks.
If a link is broken then you can manually relink or write a script to do it easier the next time.
For example I link it to my Nextcloud savegame dir.
pwd
/home/${USER}/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/250520/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games
ln -s "${HOME}/Nextcloud/Saves/Underrail/" ./Underrail
Actually I'd reccommend doing it to all of your games, which don't have cloud saves.
I also did this for a while with GOG games as well, but i stopped using GOG due to lacking GNU/Linux support on the launcher side.
Proton-6.5-GE-2 https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Had to install dotnet40 and xna40 with protontricks otherwise it would lag horribly when hovering over items in-game. Saving is also considerably slower than on WIndows so sometimes I turned on autosaves when moving though several areas.

Just be sure to kill the process after quitting - it won't shut itself down correctly.
Performance alternates between perfectly fine and slightshow sometimes. Seems to be triggered by UI elements sometimes.
Still very much playable, though, given its turn-based nature.
Out of the box
Some actions is really slow.

dxvk solved the issue look notes from earlier
Like others said, install xna and dotnet
be sure your proton wineprefix has dxvk
enabled, for that i'd reccommend to install protontricks
protontricks 250520 dxvk
Game runs out of the box. I played many hours.
Game does not close Underrail.exe after a quit.
You need to Kill the process manually (not a big deal I think).

Runs out of the box on Proton 5.0.9 :)
cons: buggy mouse movement when onto heavily populated areas with items & won't shut down properly (had to kill from task manager)

5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
playable out of the box but has performance issue install dotnet40 or higher resolve the problem no need manually install xna40 not work with proton 5.0
move between monitors cause error
with out dotnet installed the save is not compatible with dotnet version

after addin protontricks 250520 dotnet452 and protontricks 250520 xna40 game runs perfectly
after playing for 3-5 h game would artifact and crash
after going in to fullscreen mode there was very thin border - no hinderance to gameplay just sticking out
very rare crash after 3-5h of game play game would artifact and crash

The performance issue related to mouse cursor location combined with hang on exit makes UnderRail a tough sell on for Proton users
Double clicks are frequently not recognized as double clicks. It does not appear to be a problem with double click speed, but something else stranger is causing this behavior.
When mouse cursor is placed anywhere but the black map fog, performance begins to tank as low as 1fps. It is still somewhat playable, but very jerky and awkward.
Hang on exit is a stability issue
Need protontricks 250520 dotnet452
and protontricks 250520 xna40
to run properly

Had to install dotnet452, and xna40, which took a while; afterward, game ran fine. However, it does need to be quit through system monitor after it's been closed.
Game doesn't properly quit; you need to close it via pkill or system monitor. Other than that, works great.
dotnet452 and xna40
Problems with selecting targets
Not Yet ready for Out of the box experience .
kept hearing some fx after exiting the game
The game did not quit properly , it kept running .
The game now RUN without any tinkering via proton 4.18.2 , only the remaining issue is it does not close properly , that game will propably goes from silver to platinium directly once this is fix .

Runs perfect after 'protontricks 250520 dotnet452' and 'protontricks 250520 xna40'.

Initially had issue described by other users where game would black screen upon saving. I was able to fix this by running "protontricks 250520 xna40" at the terminal.
The game will not stop running when you exit, so you need to manually kill underrail.exe. Otherwise it seems to be running fine after this fix.

Runs perfectly after installing protontricks dotnet452 and xna40

Runs perfect after 'protontricks 250520 dotnet452' and 'protontricks 250520 xna40'.

- Can't save the game via auto-save, quick save, and manual save.
- Lags at irregular interval but is smooth for the most part
- Playable if you plan to finish it without saving XD

Black screen after a short intro.

Fails to load zone.

Can't save, had to disable autosave on transition to even get into the tutorial

Version 1.1.0.10 with Expedition DLC. Works as expected on Proton 4.2-9 after executing "protontricks 250520 xna40". As always, game freezes on exit.

Expedition is out, so lets try again............... Game version 1.1.0.9 with Expedition DLC installed...............
Using Proton 4.2-9: Game freezes on zone transitions due to savegames... (problems with mscorlib and savegames...). It's possible to disable autosaves and play the whole campaign without a single save... xD. Map navigation with right click is broken too...............
Using Proton 3.16-9 with "protontricks 250520 dotnet452" and "protontricks 250520 xna40" game runs out of the box...

Latest stable update killed compatibility. Game now crashes in area transitions while trying to autosave. Disabling autosave works and the game runs, but you can't manually save your progress.
TL;DR: SAVING IS BORKED.

Latest stable version of the game runs almost perfectly with some slowdowns hovering the mouse over some interactable objects and containers and having to manually kill the process after exiting. Latest experimental (1.1.0.5) hangs on zone transitions and is unplayable (game can't progress past the introduction).
