The one Steam recommends by default 9.0-4., GE-Proton 9-23
Tried all Proton versions, none work.

Had to try a couple times to get the Xbox live login to accept typing. Just closed and reopened the window and tapped until it took it.

Will try some tweaks.

Back when I bought this game at launch I wasn't able to play it at all, but fast forward 3 years and here I am concluding happily that I finished this fantastic piece of the Gears saga in 50 hours. The game ran flawlessly, no tinkering was needed, only Proton had to mature "some".
Crash after initial credits
Game crashed after initial credits, along with the Steam itself.

in-game 30 FPS cap
Combat log, Reticle info (used/remaining action points), and a couple other minor elements
after initial credits the game just hangs while loading displaying a black screen, until I force quit

Proton 7.0-5
Generally works great, only sometimes the occasional crash. Overall good gaming experience.
I could start it, log into my Microsoft account, make it to the main menu, after changing ANY settings the game crashes. Then after the loading screen it crashes and I can't make it any further. Wondering if it's a file permission issue. Haven't been able to solve it nor find anyone that can help.

Frequently hangs on "logging in"
works ok if it starts but about 85% of the time logging into xbox live hangs forever (stuck on "logging in...") so running the game is a frustrating lottery
Set to 30fps
Microsoft login thingy required manual launch of the keyboard. Game couldn't be started without logging in.
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
sadly I have to deal with texture flickering
had to use PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% to minimize FPS drops
It crashed once while changing graphics settings while beeing in a mission, whole X server froze, but still could ssh to the machine, though shutdown wouldn't complete and I had to Magic SysRQ the system

gamemoderun %command%
Needed to use gamemode to get performance on par with Windows
Works perfectly
Works great, no issues at all.

Overall works well, no major issues thus far. I do get the sense that it pushes the hardware which may not be the windows experience?
Generally runs between 30-60fps. On one occasion so far it was stuck at 15fps while in HUD/non mission scenario
Running great, melting my GPU regardless
The game runs great: with my GPU i'm on ultra settings or whatever they're called at 1440p and it runs between 80 and 110 fps. Though, it's melting my GPU a bit and whenever i try to launch it with the FSR arguments it won't launch. Other than that, a great experience
Game has very low framerate (~7 fps) but both GPU and CPU are at 15-20%
70fps ultra 1440p ultrawide
Works great (except that it requires a Microsoft account for some reason :D), no crashes.
Noticed some FPS drops in some cutscenes, at least before the first and last bosses.

Generally runs well.
Occasionally the game will crash; I have lost progress for some missions.
Flawless when running with proton 6.3-7 out of the box, no issues whatsoever.

Work out of the box! Working smooth on my setup.
I have crashed once. Not sure what causing it yet - there is a chance it was related to my overclock setting. Again, not sure yet.

Game start, can browse the menu fine then crash during the loading screen .

I'm running the NVIDIA 470 driver.

Game freezes with a GPU error in the journalctl

Works fine now. The graphic issues which i mentoned before are gone.

Good playable, despite some graphic issues
Certain textures not shown, textures flickering on character models, artifacts during cutscenes, even with PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%

Performance problems and hanging loading screens make this game technically playable, but not enjoyable.
When loading screen becomes unresponsive, game reverts to previous save, before whatever triggered the loading screen. This results in a minor loss of progress.
Loading screens take about 4 times as long as on Windows. Sometimes, they hang, and the game becomes unresponsive, requiring the use of the "stop" button in Steam. When the game is working, there are often stutters or frame drops that last up to 5 seconds, which doesn't happen in Windows on this hardware.
Hanging loading screens that cause the game to become unresponsive.
I launched the game using this command, in the game's properties: PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
as others have stated, it works great using PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% it runs clean and beautifully. no audio crackle or video issues. runs smoothly.
Minor artifacts present, stable so far
Minor crackling in background music
Certain textures not shown, textures flickering on character models, artifacts during cutscenes
Set launch options as other users have stated, and the game finally works now!!! PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
Proton-5.21-GE-1
The game runs exactly like on windows. No glitches, no stuttering.
Installs but freezes on Launch

Stuck at blank screen
I tried Proton 5.0-9, Proton-5.11-GE-1-MF, Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF, but none of them would succeed in letting me reach the main menu. I tried disabling e-sync, f-sync, enforcing D3DVK, DXVK, but all I end up with is a blank screen and a barely noticeable 5% of CPU usage. When the blank screen comes upon pressing the Play button, I can see that my webcam's LED lights up a few times, but other than there's no feedback.

rare, small artifacts during cut scenes only. no problems during missions.
startup parameters PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% don't add PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 or PROTON_USE_VKD3D=1 game will crash.

it started and froze on the startup I tried it several times but I couldn't get it to run again
I think it has something to do with the game not be able to verify an Xbox acc but this is a guess as good as any
