Works quite well by default if you can live with frametime spikes every now and then.
Sometimes the audio is not in sync and the audio of a shot was playing too late. This only happened a few times and was not very common. But if it happens it is indeed very irritating.
FPS in general are just like on windows. However I do get significant stuttering in frametimes every now and then. Usually when the game is loading things while driving or while in a firefight when shooting. This does not happen on windows and is quite annoying for a smooth gameplay.
The game takes longer than on windows to load all the models and textures. This sometimes also happens on Windows when playing mods like "Overthrow" but it's way more obivous on Linux and happens on all maps regardless of modding.
The map has some issues. I could not scroll/move on the map while having the "missions" tab open for combat ops. But it starts working again once the menu is closed. Not a big issue but irritating.
Worked without any tinkering on AMD in general but has some annoying bugs which prevent me from enjoying this in PVP multiplayer.
Works very well out of the box using the Steam version.
Some labes in some menus or in game were showing up too large. Did not affect gameplay at all.
Optional: I recommend setting the display resolution in the options.ini (if larger than 1080p) and adjusting the max camera height in INIZH.big.
Works perfectly fine out of the box
No issues at all, very solid frametimes and FPS using VRR
Works perfectly out of the box!
Runs very much the same as on Windows. Did not notice any difference.
Works perfectly fine out of the box with commond hardware, needs a bit of tinkering when using Virpil devices
PROTON_ENABLE_HIDRAW=0x3344/0x01f8,0x3344/0x025b,0x03eb/0x2054,0x03eb/0x2046 SDL_JOYSTICK_HIDAPI=0 gamemoderun %command% /autorun /edo
In order to use uncommon hardware such as Virpil devices, the ID's need to be given to wine using PROTON_ENABLE_HIDRAW and disable auto mapping using SDL_JOYSTICK_HIDAPI. See the given launch options - the IDs can be found out with lsusb
. With this little trick wine / the game detects the hardware as an input device just as if on Windows.
And just as on Windows Elite Dangerous only supports devices with a maximum of 32 buttons. So in order to use divces with more you either need to use the Virpil "split device" functionality (so it splits a single hardware into multiple devices, each of which have a maximum of 32 buttons) or you can use AntiMicroX to map the buttons to keyboard presses very similar to "Joystick Gremlin" on Windows. I used the latter method (AntiMicroX) which works perfectly fine.
Multiplayer works perfectly out of the box with so issues
It works just as well as it does on Windows, with a bit of tinkering if you want to use Virpil devices. Even the E:D Market Connector works out of the box (simply download and install from GitHub). Also ViLA for using the Virpil LEDs works out of the box, a native Linux version is available.
Works perfectly in multiplayer out of the box
At specific times the frame rate dropped a bit. Always at sunrise in the day cycle the frame rate dropped from ~90 to ~50 but only a one or two minutes until "the sun was up". As I only played the game on Linux and not on Windows yet, I cannot say if this is a Linux or a game/hardware problem.
Everything worked perfectly fine. We played a few hours on a private dedicated server without any issues at all.
The game is still early access at the moment, so there are bugs and inconsistencies. Did not play this on Windows so I cannot say if it's any different there, but it is fun and everything works as expected.
Works perfectly out of the box
Playing coop did work just fine.
Pretty much the same as on Windows. Works perfectly fine in coop multiplayer
The option to turn on MSAA is missing on Linux at the moment. Aside from this it worked perfectly fine.
Also coop multiplayer (with another Linux installation) works flawlessly so far.
