Perfectly fine out of the box. Works like a native game.
I could play the full game out of the box with no issues, native-like experience.
As an observation, I played the full game windowed (never really tried to go fullscreen).
The game looks pure black and white: It doesn't have the sepia tint it has on the store page. It seems to be because it can't load some shaders.
The game doesn't look like it's supposed to (it looks black and white rather than sepia) but other than that, it's fully playable. Also, it only seems to work on Proton 5.0; I tried it first on the latest Proton version and it just gives a blank window.
Out of the box, I get consistent 60 fps at max resolution even on my potato hardware. I can't imagine it running much better on Windows.
Very slight audio crackling during some tracks
The game works great with Proton 6.3-8 out of the box, no tinkering needed. I used that version just because it's the one my Steam client uses as default rather than the newer one. I haven't tried the game on Proton 7.0 yet.
The only issues I had were some very slight audio crackling during some tracks and the animated cutscenes being laggy when played from the gallery (both of which would probably be solved with some tinkering). Other than that, flawless performance both offline and online.
Playable like a native game out of the box, save some issues listed below.
Small issue when fullscreening. Solved it by resetting the game's resolution from within the game itself.
The game works fine, but there were some issues:
I couldn't fullscreen the game properly at first. This was solved by resetting the resolution from within the game (doing it only once solved the issue).
The online experience was awful. I could connect and play just fine, but the matches themselves, which offline ran at 60-ish FPS for me, ran at 10-20 FPS at best. That being said, friends I played with reported the same issue when playing from Windows PC's (both against me and against each other), so I don't think this is Proton's fault.
On a similar note, I experienced a crash in my time playing this game with Proton. But, again, people I know have experienced crashes when playing on Windows, so I don't think Proton is at fault for this either.
Out of the box, the performance was significantly worse than on Windows for me. I can't recommend this one.
The characters on the battle animations were black squares.
The whole game was a bit sluggish. Loading times were slow and animations were slower than on Windows.
I got a crash with the message "Win32 function failed: HRESULT: 0x887 a0005 Call: GR_D3D_Device-> CreatureTexture2D at time 453 in file /TexturesM.cpp". I could solve it by using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%, as a previous report suggested.
The battle animations were broken (characters and some background elements were replaced by black squares) and everything felt sluggish and laggy.
Works like a charm. Native-like experience.
I could play the full game game + DLC with zero issues. No tinkering needed.
Some have mentioned the cutscenes not working, but the only real "cutscene" the game has is the opening theme, and it worked fine for me. If there were other cutscenes, I didn't really notice their abscence. I never had to skip through a black screen or anything like that.
A bit worse than on Windows, but it should be completely playable out of the box with a not-so-potato PC.
Slight FPS loss
It works slightly worse than on Windows. On the same PC, Windows gives me 45-60 FPS, while with Proton (out of the box) I get 30-60 FPS. It should be completely playable with some tinkering or better hardware.
Worked well out of the box, save some very minor issues listed below.
Slight, barely noticeable crackling
I played with a PS3 controller. For some reason, the D-Pad wasn't responsive. The analog stick and the rest of the buttons worked fine, though, so it was not an issue in the end.
Works well out of the box with some minor issues.
The game would crash sometimes when overwriting saves (not when using new saves slots, just when overwriting)
The game sometimes would crash when overwriting old saves, but the it's pretty short and there's a lot of save slots, so this is not really a big issue. Also, sometimes when starting up the game I would just get a black screen with the game sound, but that would fix itself just by closing the game and opening it again.
I could play the full game out of the box with close to zero issues (the only problem I had is listed below).
Slight audio crackling during cutscenes in two particular areas you only visit once. Far from game breaking, though.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 solves audio issues
Played for a few minutes. The audio crackling can be solved with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 . The framerate is a bit lower than on Windows (I got stable 60fps on Windows, but 30ish here) but it's perfectly playable anyway.
Could play the full game out of the box, no tinkering needed. Same experience as on Windows. No slowdonws, audio glitches or anything.
Same as the original game. 10/10 performance with Proton out of the box, no issues whatsoever. And 10/10 game overall.
I had to disable esync to prevent occasional crashing. With that done, it's exactly the same experience as Windows. I could play the full game with no issues at all.
The game starts and runs well enough, but load times are slow, it stutters a little and the frame rate is lower than it should be (I got 20-40 FPS with my specs). I used Proton 5.13 .
Playable out of the box with minor performance issues
Tested on Proton 5.13 . Played for less than 15 minutes. I could start and play perfectly fine, but loading times were long, there was some stuttering and the framerate was a bit low (20-40 fps).
It works mostly fine, save for a problem with the controller I tried to use.
For some reason, my controller's D-Pad wasn't recognized (I was using a PS3 controller). Everything else worked fine, though.
It worked perfectly to me (including the opening video), save for the problem with my PS3 controller's D-Pad. So, if you don't care about that, you can probably play just fine.
Out of the box, it doesn't work at all
With the current Proton version, all I get is a black screen after booting up the game. I tested Proton 5.13 too: with it, the game starts but freezes a few seconds into the initial scene.
