Almost all text is rather small. Not a great game for a small screen, but probably not a big deal to those who know the game/interface
I may come back to this if I feel like learning the game on desktop. There's a community controller config available, but I didn't ty it.
No sound
Be wary of default buttons, I accidentally hit the restart button a few times. Maybe remap that one?
this game is too hard for me...i suck at it
As mentioned in other review, fullscreen stretches vertically. I didn't find this to be an issue.
changed dpad to WSAD (I'm too twitchy for the joystick)
I installed the game from Epic Store through Junk Store decky plugin (uses Legendary in the background). I'm not sure if it applies fixes or anything...
Blendo games have the best music. No problems. Not really a game for adults though...
No controller support
switched to XNA beta
No music. SFX were fine.
Need to use XNA beta or it won't even launch
fullscreen and resolution need to be set manually
gamepad controls are slightly awkward, but I didn't bother changing them (during tutorials, I had to look at controller settings)
Online mods don't work anymore. You can download some from their website (check discussions, deck browser has no select/copy 🙄). Game runs better on linux than it did last time I tried on windows.
Mouse speed needs adjusting on deck, the targets are tiny
Large borders and square playing field don't work well with Deck screen. Better with no margins (or if the window could be made bigger than the screen and the playing field could be zoomed and panned.
I kept having to remember which controls do what. Mild inconvenience, would likely go away after a while (I'm npot used to playing with controller)
Nice music, too
Does not support remapping. I've switched my controls system-wide to nintendo layout, and this breaks arrow mapping; the abxy buttons are used as a (necessary) second dpad.
- I could remap them but then they wouldn't work properly in menus.
- I can use the joystick, but I have a tendency to twitch it just far enough to go diagonal; for games that dont use diagonals this frequently gets detected as vertical instead of horizontal, or vice versa (I have tics, but this usually isn't an issue, right stick is usually used for camera or movement)
This "game" is bad. Hopefully I got it in a bundle, because nobody should have to pay for this...
i used a community layout for gyro control, but mostly used the stick. Is this supposed to be this easy?
The ridge 1 was purple underneath
could not use touchscreen (unintuitive, but also inaccurate; taps should go to existing nearby element if <1 spot away, not the exact place tapped), it was extremely annoying to be forced into using the gamepad
I didn't play past the ridge 1, the game gets too hard for my lazy brain
Managed to get it working once, accidentally deleted it and couldn't figure it out again :(
I think maybe the menu doesn't work with gamepad? The default layout certainly doesn't work with menus. I had to map dpad to arrow keys and use awkward steam+left for enter.
Problems getting the setup menu to recognize gamepad buttons.
The cmmunity layout mentioned in other review doesn't exist.
Gamepad support is only detected if the game launches with it selected. If you then accidentally switch to kb/mouse, you have to reset the game to switch back.
ignore my other review (I had read the other review and started with KB/M previously)
Used 8W average on deck at max settings, according to Decky battery tracker. 60fps all the way. Now I'm off to find some mods...
Instaled from Epic Games via Junk Store. Everything else is left default. Proton vesion chosen by Steam is default 9.0-4
In-game setting to limit to 30fps. I think vsync was on by default, also in-game setting.
Interface is small for steam deck
I expect it should work the same or better if installed by steam.
Game is not intended for small screens. The UI is quite busy.
No explanaton of UI. The crafting interface is the inventory, I spent close to an hour trying to figure out where all my crafted items were disappearing to (trying different search terms, skipping through videos that never even filled up the quck bar and thus had no reason to manage it), not realizing it was the same interface and I could drag them out.
Minimum creen size is assumed by UI and not fully scrollable horizontally
Need minimum size screen rsolution (not fully determined) to see all settings.
Triggers aren't treated as simple/instant clicks
This review applies only to the editor, which allows editing mods and game files.
- It assumes a very wide screen, and only vertical scrolling is available. On Deck with native resolution, multiple properties are visible with only 3 letters shown, and many of these are missing tooltips.
- Opening xml files from the menu in game mode on Deck straight up doesn't work; I find it more convenient to edit these from my tablet or desktop with an ssh connection, as I don't have a USB keyboard.
- In general, the editor has far less polish than the main game (which is somewhat understandable as a tool, but the alternative is hand-writing xml files...)
- I recommend using git (or other revision control) on either the data directory as a whole or on individual mods to help keep track of things. It may simplify diffs if you check what each edit changes and rewrite the changes to keep original ordering (the game appears not to have been created with the same version of the editor). I also recommend at least checking diffs after changes, as I've caught the editor adding new properties and other data.
- Be careful clicking in menus when using the triggers, they're treated as long clicks; if you have the cursor over a menu item when you release, you will open that specific item (I keep opening the first item in each menu by mistake). Recommend holding trigger down, then moving cursor to menu scrollbar to release.
For basic changes like tweaking cost of items in mods or making them less overpowered, the editor is fully usable.
You need to pick resolution and performance settings on every launch. Default settings look terible.
Increase trackpad "mouse" sensitiity, bind 1-3 and to back buttons, etc
Saves don't transfer between linux/windows. (did not check if they're even synced)
- According to Valve the controller may not always be sufficient. I'm a good bit in and haven't noticed such a thing. Maybe there's hotkeys for directly opening the map or inventory, idk.
- If need be, the back buttons are unused and can be mapped to hotkeys or macros.
- While I mostly didn't touch the keybinds, for certain quests/tests I did temporarily change the L2 bumper (shield) into a toggle to make them easier.
- I didn't bother disabling HDR mode, not sure if the colors are right, but they seem fine to me.
- Proton version works equally well.
- I'm not sure if steam cloud is saving the games, I didnt try another computer. Saves are in
~/.config
.
Defaults to wrong resolution, but opens to graphics settings, so that's easy to fix.
There's an option in settings to hide the "courser" if you're only using the controller.
The paddle kept twitching over to the left so I used the touchscreen knstead of the touchpad
steam deck widescreen is crap for vertical scrolling bullet hell...
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b" %command%
Very difficult to figure out controls. I wanted to use the other community layout, but it wouldn't steer.
If using mohredlou's layout, make sure the game is launched with a controller, and turn it on in settings or it won't work.
Mouse cursor did not indicate location of click until I fixed the resolution.
Game runs fine with high graphics at 90fps.
all sound disappears if I open overlay (decky auto-suspend may be the issue here)
the camera controls can get stuck sometimes
I didnt have any stuttering issues
There is no native version available. Disabling proton simply deletes the files. Attempting to download the linux depot manually with DepotDownloader returns a 401, even when authenticated with an account that owns it.
Hold steam button and use touchpad for initial setup. I didn't think to check for community layout, moght be worthwhile.
The forced introduction with controls is necessary to play the game, but I think it could do without the weird controls.
You can only use first-person view while holding down a button (there's no toggle, and not worth remapping as you can't move without switching back.
The game starts on medium graphics and autodetects medium, but high works fine at 90fps.
custom with mostly random keyboard keys for various buttons, then mapped in-game
Does not run without GE.
I suck at racing games.
remapped buttons in-game
this game is hard...
Everything is tiny
Tutorial is a video
- No text explanation of what's going on.
- No subtitles. Audio is required. Don't have headphones (or deaf) in a busy space? Too bad for you.
- The video starts with no indicaton of what's happening with audio off; it looks like a still image (I thought it was loading for the first few seconds)
- There is no option for an in-game full-screen tutorial (ie slide show with text explaining highlighted UI like many other games)
- The video is tiny and plays centered on-screen
- The in-game text in the video is unreadable on Deck. I streamed the game to my desktop, and the only fix I can think of is to use the OS accessibility tools to zoom the video to full-screen (the actual game text is readable, the video is too small). Not everyone has a large screen.
I can't use the tutorial, so I'm giving up.
I did not find any of the UI intuitive/obvious, but this could be a result of playing on a small screen, so I'm not including this as a negative.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 RADV_PERFTEST=aco PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
in-game text visible through the MAVI on walls and such, the font would be readable larger, but also if it was a cleaner font)
Set display resolution to 1280x720 for widescreen, otherwise it's 4:3.
Game doesn't last more than ~5 minutes. Save and restart the game after every autosave or it'll crash.
The launch options were tested in multiple combinations with multiple versions of proton (all options were suggested by other protondb reviews). Every time the game crashed, I tweaked the settings, hoping for a better result. Apparently this game has issues under Windows as well. Proton 5 and 8 were also tested as per suggestions on other reviews (default was 9.0-4)
back button to b for buying missiles
No controller support. No tutorial. No key layout. No help.
According to steam discussions:
- Right click: shoot
- Left click: missiles
- Arrow keys: dodge
- B: Buy missiles
These can not be remapped...although...
Given that the game seems to be written in lua, there's instructions on steam forum for changing screen resolution and someone found the keybinds, though there's far too many.
- Trigger is w key instead of mouse. Jump when the menu is open. (use touchcreen for mouse input). I may change this back and map A to jump instead.
- joystick is autoclicker 🙃
Numbers are a bit small. Considering this is a mobile game, how do you even read them on a smaller screen?
Trigger defaults to mouse button instead of keypress.Try to jump when cursor is over the menu and it opens the menu. Remapped.
Add Z and X buttons for special weapons
font choice issue, not text size
Using A for click feels unintuitive. I'll probably remap that to trigger next time.
joysticks as dpad
Native version is borked.
Better with a big creen. For a port of a mobile game, the diamonds some monsters drop are awfully tiny. Recommend using mouse for those.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 added to params in junk-store
Epic games version via Junk Store
powerups
Don'ttry to remap controler, it's impossible.
You can't enable antialiaing, and toggling fullscreen or changing resolution breaks the game. Windows version has non-working controls (no mouse input, impossible to pick certain options)
No exit button after quitting the game. Possibly because I started via controller config (there is no config here, just a start button)
Fix: ln -s /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Nubarron/nubarron_Data/StreamingAssets/Audio/GeneratedSoundBanks/PS4 /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Nubarron/nubarron_Data/StreamingAssets/Audio/GeneratedSoundBanks/Linux
Link or rename an audio file directory to get sound working on linux, thanks to a fix on steam discussions
Defauls to keyboard controls, controller works in menu but need to switch to controller for it to work in levels...
The first level ater tutorial is impossible. Broken by design.
This game is in desperate need of easy/casual mode. The demo is all I played, but even on the easy setting blocks fall far too fast.
The controls are crap. Recommend switching right trackad to move. Woul be worth changing the left trackpad to rotate camera, but it requires a long-press; the game detects controller input and changes hints based on input type, so usin the mouse removes all gamepad hints (this is fine for occasional use, but if you're switching frequently it's a bad experience)
Game lacks polish (significantly so) and no longer in development (seemingly incomplete as well, according to reviews, but I didn't get that far). Prepare for frustration if you can't remember controls and want to remap some of them; the gamepad controls can not be remapped in-game, so the only option is remapping the controller and losing control hints.
Native linux version is broken on Deck, at least in game mode. Did not try desktop mode.
Left trackpad as scroll
Nearly all the text is tiny. The kerning is bad, too.
- Back buttons for quick access to mods
- Left trackpad as mod menu
I installed too many mods and the game crashed while using tractor. Maybe I shpuld play properly.
Rant: Nexus mods is a garbage fire, I don't want/need another account, and they won't let me register with my primary email (using my own domain)
Right trackpad as mouse.
in-game magnifier works fine. If you remap controls, you'll want to use the steam magnifier though, the in-game magnifier only works in combination with gamepad controls and closes on kb/m input.
The cursor from the joystick and the cursor from the mouse are separate. Frustrating if you're mostly fine with the layout but want to use the trackpad as mouse for longer distances.
Played via family sharing.
Epic Games version installed via Junk Store, played fine. I don't recall setting a proton version, but 9.0-4 was selected
Everything is tiny
Small text size made it hard to use joystick mouse emulation, needed to use touchscreen. Recommend external display if on deck.
The official controller layout was actually done properly, you can look at it in overlay and everything is labelled.
I didn't check FPS, but didn't have any other issues described in older reviews of native version.
I played plugged in, so wasn't worried about battery; you can set the settngs to max/ultra and further drag all the remaining sliders (draw distance, etc) to max and the Deck can handle it fine. The fan wasn't noticable.
Text size was fine for me in most places, but if the subtitles are too small, they can be made bigger. (I think subtitles defaulted to off, I turn them on usually). The HUD is also adjustable.
Constant beeping even if you turn off the music and sfx.
Crashed after half hour or so
tapping the screen changes controls back to keyboard & mouse. If you use both touchscreen and controller buttons, it males thigs annoying (e.g. if you tap an item to craft, you can't change quantity with controller, you need to use the touchscreen)
I tried the game in both proton (default install) and native (set compatibility to steam linux runtime) in game mode, and both worked great.
I added a controller layout with nearly all controls (I forgot to add a button to hide UI, but I'm not sure if I can even update the shared layout). This is far more than is necessary, but it was simple enough to do. Check for Tinytopia Controls in community layouts.
Unrelated: Text input on deck is a terrible experience, remniscent of early tablets in ~2010. I can't wait for mobile-style autocorrect/spellcheck.
If necessary, you can increase the size of some text by going to settings -> game -> accessibility. I didn't feel the need, but it might help.
Game does not start with correct resolution, you need to increase it in settings.
No idea how to close the computer/browser.
Cannot progress past browser
Game runs, but is buggy af (not a linux issue). Example: The gun/parts/tools fly off when you let them go. Unity resource resellers are beter than this. The music is also annoying.
After ~12 hours (no included time system was suspended) there were a ton of illegal instruction/similar errors. Eventually managed to tap ok on them all and save game to restart.
random. Once you reassign binds, you can't reset amd can't assign the left mouse btton to anything
Cannot navigate menu with anything except mouse input. Evenwith dpad mapped to arrows it was impossible.
No controller support. Recommend using a custom controller mapping with the default key layout rather than changing any settings.
The tutorial is unhelpful in that it tells you default keybinds, not current settings.
