Worked perfectly out of the bnox
Unlike other reports, I didn't experience any kind of bug or lag or suttering with the mouse input. Everything worked correctly, I was able to play with no issues. The game defaulted to the Vulkan back end, in case that's of any help for anyone having issues.
Works perfectly out of the box
Alt tabbing is a bit wonky but you can sorta make it work with enough insistance. I don't quite remember the game having this problem on Windows, but it's possible it was like that there too.
Runs perfectly out of the box, no tweaking needed.
Proton 5.9-GE-5-ST GloriousEggroll
Need to run protontricks 392110 wmp11 win7
or cutscenes won't work.
The ships on the ship creation screen and the 3D battles are missing the missiles and bullets. They don't shoot anything, but it's entirely a visual bug that's not distracting and doesn't hinder the experience at all (unless you really like watching ships shoot).
If you set the graphic preset to "Fastest" the entire main menu becomes invisible, leaving only the background. If you need to use these setting because your hardware is too weak (like mine) then you will need to remember where the quit and confirm buttons are, because you'll need to set the preset to "Fastest" and blindly quit the game to have it save your options (force-quit overwrites them). After that, it works no issues.
Works perfeclty out of the box, but change Proton version to 5.0!
Minor audio issues.
As the game is on Valve's whitelist, it defaults to Proton version 3.16. However, while this version seems to work fine, the glass shatter sound effect plays at full volume to the point it gets distorted and actually hurts my ears. Be careful, don't play with 3.16, play with 5.0 or newer.
Also, at one point the Mob Car engine's sound effect volume was very low, this happened once and it went away later. All other sound effects seem to work perfectly fine and performance is stellar.
Game runs without an issue out of the box with Proton 5.0-7. Intro video doesn't load but you can skip it.
The game ran perfectly fine with Proton 5.0-9, GE version crashed the game at launch.
My hardware was too weak to run the game adequate framerates so I didn't play that much (even after tweaking the config file to lower settings even more). Cutscenes didn't play and I nearly had a seizure on the loading screen because it flashes the screen very rapidly. Apparently cutscenes are fixed with the mf patch, see other reports for instructions on how to install it, I didn't try myself because there was no point since I'm not going to play this version.
Game runs perfectly out of the box with Proton 5.9-GE-5-ST. Absolutely no issues, and even ran better than on Windows.
Works perfectly out of the box.
Runs as if it were native. No tweaking needed, no issues whatsoever, not even the slightest stutter.
Native version doesn't work, neither with Proton
The game throws a segmentation fault at startup and closes with the Native version. When I tried with Proton, the GE and 5.13 versions told me that I needed DX11 support (which my GPU has). Proton 5.0-9 started the game, but after opening a black screen just crashes.
Downloaded from Steam and it just displays a bunch of "exception" messages, then terminates the process.
Lighting doesn't work at all, making the game effectively unplayable.
Lighting doesn't work at all. Everything is bright or dark, and the flashlight doesn't emit light.
I tried to play the game with the Native version, but it was crashing right after the first seciton, when you get off the boat and open the hatch leading to the underground part below the snowstorm. After loading the level the game would always crash. When playing with Proton, while this crash didn't happen, lighting is broken so the game can't be played.
Tried with Proton 4.11-13 and 5.0-9. Both gave a "failed to set resolution" error and crashed.
Had to install wmp11 as described in other reports.
People who have a slow PC like me may notice that the game runs slow as hell. This is not a Proton issue, it's an issue with the game that forces its internal resolution to be very high, causing slowdowns on weak hardware just as mine. There's a mod that lets you change the internal resolution to whatever you want. Sadly, the game crashes after installing the mod so I wasn't able to play. If you have any dedicated GPU from 2010 onwards, it should be fine.
The game has huge performance problems. It slows down even on low and makes the experience less enjoyable. However, this command fixed all that letting me run it without a hitch.
There's no way to distinguish normal enemies from elite ones. The elite enemies have the same sprite and their health bar is not surrounded in a white border as it should. Other than that no issues.
The native version is effectively broken since it has parts where the game consistently crashes and is in general really unstable. The game tends to crash with many things on the screen, or always crashes when unlocking the Miner for instance. Playing with Proton is required, assume there's no native version.
Launch parameter: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Works perfectly out of the box
I had absolutely no issues. Maybe some low FPS but I'm unsure if that's due to my hardware or Proton. I guess the former. Had a crash once but after that it worked perfectly fine.
BTW, if you want to lower graphics clicking the options only makes the settings go higher, but they don't loop back, you'll need to use the left arrow key to get lower settings... it's kind of janky but anyway...
The game works perfectly out of the box, except for the music. To make the music work you'll need to make a number of steps. You'll need to install two packages lib32-gst-plugins-ugly
and lib32-gst-libav
. These are the package names in the AUR, your distro may have different names.
It's worth noting that these packages need to be compiled, and they didn't work for me when I compiled them myself, instead I had to use the chaotic-aur mirror which had these pre-compiled. You can check if they got installed with yay -Q | grep gst
.
Then install quartz
on the game's prefix. You can use protontricks to install it like so: protontricks 1368820 quartz
. You can use winetricks too, you'll need to locate where the prefix is. On Steam it's ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1368820
. Once found just run WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix/ winetricks quartz
.
And that's it, now the game fully works, music included.
Music didn't work, I included instructions on how to fix this.
The game works perfectly. Only notable issue, the taskbar being drawn on top of the game, but that may not be an issue on other DEs or WMs.
On Linux Mint 20, the taskbar was drawn over the game and there was not way to make it disappear. At one point, the game screen got shifter up cutting an upper portion of the screen. Tiny annoyance, but still there.
Works perfectly out of the box
Absolutely no issues. Just download, play and you're running. As others metnioned, game launches in Windowed mode, but just go to the settings to enable fullscreen, nothing noteworthy to be honest.
I tested with my controller and it got picked up no problem, I also tried Encore mode, which other user mentioned doesn't work, but I was able to play it no problem.
I'm amazed. This works incredibly well, even on my weak-ass Intel HD 4000! I played through the entire game and even did 100% collectibles at 40-60FPS, it's truly incredible. Do note tho, that if you have an old iGPU like mine, the game will crash at startup, and you'll need the following launch parameters to make it work: MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.4 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=440
after that, it's smooth sailing.
Proton-5.9-GE-7-ST GloriousEggroll
Launch option: MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=iris %command%
All models (Worms, crates, health packs, even guns and cosmetic items) are invisible. This alone renders the game effectively unplayable despite working perfectly everywhere else (and videos don't work).
The bug I noted only affects Intel HD Graphics users like myself, other graphic cards should have no issues. If you happen to have an Intel iGPU you can fix this by using the following launch parameter: MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=iris %command%
. While this worked in my setup, it made the game unplayable because it had extremely low FPSs when it was running at 60 before. This command should only be used in Iris cards.
