Crashes on startup
Running Fedora with Nvidia GPU and an Intel iGPU. Tried a few proposed solutions (like OPENSSL_ia32cap) to no avail.
Does not work with Proton-Experimental, starts with Proton5.0 but cutscenes dont' work. Had to start the game with Proton5.0 and then switch to Proton GE
gamemoderun %command%
I used GE proton just to be sure to get video cut scenes
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% -useembedded
Focusing to a different window caused the game window to become permanently black.
Crashed on launch without the launch options
After an hour or two, the game slows down, especially in galaxy view, with minor stutters. Inputs work fine still and game is playable for a full multi-hour session. No further performance degradation.
If you use any official version of proton the game will be unplayable, multiple important menus in game (like the fleet management screen) will have the backgrounds replaced with one of those old TV test bar screens. Use GE-Proton to avoid this, something to do with video codecs?
Has rare artifacts with some icons and lighting in some menus
Launched and played fine under Proton 9.0-2, crashes under Experimental.
Unable to launch from Steam or with Protontricks - screen flashes and then nothing happens
Extremely disappointing.
Worked great out of the box
WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=16 %command%
The CPU Topology flag is only included because of the number of cpu core/threads my CPU has, it should not be needed for most systems.
Unable to start the game
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% -useembedded | DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti" %command%
Unable to start the game. have tried proton experimental, 9, 8 and 6. The game looks like its going to start when you click the launch button, and it tries, and then the button changes back to the green launch button. This happened on another game, and when i switched to proton 9 and used DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti" %command%
that fixed the issue as it seems like the newer kernel may have an issue with trying to present the game to the MOBO display as opposed to the GPU display. However, I only have the GPU display. This didnt work here though. Tried many different launch options and even reviewed logs but couldn't identify what the issue was.
Game doesn't start
After installing press green "Play", it goes to "Launching" and then back to Play again. Nothing happens. It's completely borked for me. Endless Space 1 loads fine. Tried Proton Experimental and v8. No joy.
Works out of the box, no tinkering needed on my side
Haven't tried multiplayer
In addition to my previous report: i'm using Proton 8 and my control layout is named smth like "K&M modified" (my user name is "wojk1"). It also includes Magnifier Glass under R4 button, although i haven't been using it much.
Fantastic game, runs great on SD!
With 40/40 setting and Beautiful video preset (second highest) i'm getting almost 4,5 h of battery life. With my time with the game (30+ hours) I have not encountered any bugs at all. Controls are easily adjusted - i created a custom keyboard/mouse layout (left trackpad - radial menu with icons; righ trackpad - mouse; lef joystick - camera movement; right joystick - zoom in/out and menu scrolling) and i'm really satisfied with it, please feel free to try it out!
gamescope -w 5120 -h 2160 -f -W 2560 -H 1080 -- %command% WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3dcompiler_47=n;dxgi=n,b" %command% MANGOHUD=0 %command%
Missing outro video when winning with Nakalim, intro video and Academy video work normally.
After updating Nobara to latest, can't host multiplayer games but can join other's game.
gamemoderun %command%
Unable to Alt+Tab on full screen. Got a blackscreen going back to the game.
Crashed once on the ending winning scene. Opened the game again and the scene played normally
Played about 20 hours (two days) with a single problem playing the ending cutscene. Otherwise totally playable.
-novideo
Works very well out of the box, I did experience a few odd crashes, but the game autosaves every turn so it was just a bit inconvinient.
I've experienced 2 crashes when playing as sophons when colonizing a planet in turn 3 and turn 45.
I also crashed two times when clicking during the pre-menu logo cutscene
I've tried almost all galaxy combinations, and played with the following races: Sophons, Empire, Lumeris, Cravers and Riftborn. In all of these games I used standard settings (such as speed, difficulty etc).
Please do note I don't have any dlc installed, including the free ones.
Lastly, some information about my setup: I am running Gnome 44.2, on an Nvidia laptop, with the entire xorg session being rendered using the Nvidia card. I also have my laptop hooked up to a second external monitor
Some desync in multiplayer games (~3 in 200 turns), re-hosting was necessary to fix it.
Takes about 30 seconds to load into a game on my system; after that, everything runs smoothly.
Used to work fine, borked since last upgrade
The crash report isn’t particularly helpful, does not state what the game is missing.
Game installs and launches. When I click any of the options in the game menu (new game etc.) the menu disappears and nothing happens.
Attempted proton 7.0-6 and 6.3-8. Borked on all versions.
The game works well. Don't have any difficulty about the layout after a bit of tweaking.
40hz/40fps
Saves on cloud had disappear. Don't know why, if it's the steam deck fault or not.
Important : cutscenes (introductions, colonization) are no more upside/down !
forced it to run on 40hz, i feel like it gave about an hour of extra life
any non-rendered cutscene that played was flipped upside down, ie the colonization and intro/outro cutscenes
i believe the flipped cutscene issue is entirely on my end and i have not tried to fix it just yet. besides that and the occasional momentary performance tank at the start of lategame turns, the game runs flawlessly and i find it way more relaxing and accessible to play than on a pc

Originally tried to play with Proton Experimental (2 Sep 2022) and repeatedly received an access violation error. Switched to Proton 6.3-8 after looking through the reports here and it not only started but has been running better than some native Linux games do on my laptop. No noticeable decrease in frames compared to running on Windows and no crashes or bugs as of yet.
A little while into the tutorial, the game locked up.
Also tried with GE-Proton 7-24; the game crashed before starting.
Running the game with 6.8-GE-2 solves the issues with the cutscenes being upside down or not playing at all.
40 fps lock
Science window controls are clumsy
Works fine. Controls are clumsy but this is turn based game so no need to rush.
Played fine. Cinematics played properly and at full speen. I didn't notice any performance issues.
Cinematics don't play on the latest proton stable.
Installs fine, doesn't launch at all
Steam overlay shows that the game is running and I even got a trading card but nothing runs in the background. No PID for the process nor any memory usage.
Tried launching with different GE versions and w/out GE completely. Didn't change anything.
Works OOTB, no issues in 36 hours of gameplay.
Rarely Cloud save would get stuck and prevent turn progression. Save the game locally and load to fix it.
I haven't experienced any video flipping or anything out of the usual. Even works with ESG mod 1.6.
Crashed immediately at launch
Crashed on both the current version and on 6.3-8, which several other reports mentioned needing to use. The error logs show the following error:
kernelbase.dll caused an Unknown exception type (0x80000100) in module kernelbase.dll at 0033:7b01239e.
Flipped all video files upside-down
Videos can be fixed by flipping them upside-down manually (using ffmpeg
), then they will appear correctly in-game; to do so:
- in a terminal, from your Steam library (usually
~/.steam/steam/
or something similar), go to the game assets folder:
cd "<steamLibrary>/steamapps/common/Endless Space 2/EndlessSpace2_Data/StreamingAssets"
- duplicate the "Movies" folder (this will take ~4.2GB extra; this is necessary because ffmpeg cannot convert files in-place):
cp -r Movies Movies.bak
- move into the newly created folder:
cd Movies.bak
- from there, use ffmpeg to v-flip all video files, into the original folder (overwriting original files):
find . -name \*.mp4|xargs -I '{}' ffmpeg -i '{}' -vf vflip '../Movies/{}' -y
- the "Movies.bak" folder may now be deleted, but try running the game first, to make sure all is fine; if needed, Steam can restore the original "Movies" contents using Verify integrity of game files or reinstalling the game.
You may notice the new video files are much smaller than the original ones; you may tinker with ffmpeg
encoding/codec options to alter the results, but I found the smaller files to be perfectly fine as well, no noticeable artifacts.
Cutscenes are skipped
Had to use proton 6.3 because 7.0 and Experimental wouldn't launch the game
