Worked Flawlessly Out of the Box
You can basically just install this and roll. I needed no changes, and experienced no issues with any collectible dialogs or anything else.
Game Plays As It Does On Desktop
I lowered the resolution a bit, put it in windowed mode, and turned on FSR. Went from a little over 2 hours to 3.5 hours playtime.
Was able to play a few levels with someone, although admittedly it's not a "bustling" online community in my experience. But worked flawlessly from a technical standpoint.
This game runs just as well on my desktop (has windows, 3080 and 5900x) as it does on the Steam Deck. Few personal changes just to squeeze a bit more time out of it, but still lasts 2 hours just with default settings.
Lowered resolution, enabled FSR (this adversely affects the text in game)
If you don't change from default, the videos won't load (including main menu background). Also, to enable FSR you drop the resolution AND change from fullscreen mode.
Works Well Directly Out of Box
Admittedly, with the Steam Deck preset, you only get about 2 hours of playtime if you change nothing. However, some slight changes can help move that marker as you see fit.
As well, the launcher caused me zero issues. When it pops up, you press A and it launches. But, you can use the skip launcher option as others have suggested if that annoys you.
Overall, works very well and runs butter smooth.
Works Great, Little to no Changes
Game worked amazingly out of box. Only change I happened to do was change my preset to medium graphics settings simply to try to extend the battery life a little bit. (didn't have much change, but sometimes a few extra minutes is nice)
Works Perfectly with No Alterations
Game worked perfect right out of the box. I got roughly 2.5 - 3 hours out of it with all graphics maxed out and playing through. Good game and was a lot of fun!
DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr gamemoderun %command%
Game was unable to get above 30-40fps when in the forest on High, had to drop to Low-Medium
I crashed twice, once as I entered a cave and once upon entering the first major city
I tried changing Proton a few times to get better performance, didn't know that if you change it more than 5 times you'll get locked out for 24 hours.
Beyond that, what testing I was able to do I gave the specs for. It didn't work super well, and I guess I'll only try 4 times on the next attempt.
Works Well by Default - Some Changes for Battery Life
Enabled FSR and lowered settings to medium. Battery lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours.
I played for a bit just on the deck with no issues, just enabled FSR and changed the graphics for battery extension. Afterwards, hooked up to my Steam Dock and used my KingKong Pro2 controller for the rest of the time.
Works Out of the Box
Admittedly, you CAN change the default controls if you're not a fan of it. I don't think it's terrible, but my friend also tried and he didn't care for it. But overall, the controls work fine.
As well, the text is fine for me but I can forsee some peeps wanting it to be bigger. But ~2 hours of battery life and no changes made to any of the settings worked fine for me.
Plays Okay Just Bad FPS
Even turning everything off or using the lowest preset, doesn't seem I can get FPS above 40
I believe the game is playable even though it's at 30-35 FPS, as it's not exactly super fast paced. However I can play it comfortably at the balanced preset.
- Battery lasts about 1 hour 45 mins
- Fullscreen
- Resolution at 1280x800
- V-Sync off
Performance Settings:
- Frame limit: 60
- TDP Limit: 12 watts
- Scaling: Auto
- Scaling Filter: FSR
- FSR Sharpness: 1
Works Great, Some Settings Changed for More Frames
Lowered resolution to 1152x720 and engaged FSR (also set in game as "balanced") in windowed mode. Also have the TDP limit set to 12W, gives about 3 hours of gameplay.
My entire settings is listed here https://sharedeck.games/apps/1065310
However, I set the screen refresh at 60fps and was able to maintain between 55 and 60 throughout, with settings on medium.
Works Out of the Box
I played this over the past few months, but playing now on version 1.5 is much better for controls and such.
However, I will admit that (depending on the person) some text may be difficult to read. I'm fine, but others may find it small.
Battery life was about 2 hours or so from 100% to 5%.
Sometimes the game (or cutscences) would flicker.
I think the game assumes I'm using a PS controller, when in reality I'm using a Razer Wolverine (essentially Xbox controller).
The game crashes a bit, and multiplayer does not (currently) work. There were issues, but I think the game remains playable for hours at a time, there's just some sufferage.
Game Works Out of Box - Minor Changes to Help Battery
Games lasts about 1.5-2 hours with these settings somewhere between 50fps-60fps unless there's a ton going on, then it drops to around 40fps.

I had no issues after using this exact version of proton, but trying many other versions of both regular proton and GE versions, this was the only one that allowed the game to even launch.
Plays Well Right Out of the Box
With no changes and default settings, I was getting around 2 hours of playtime.
By enabling FSR and changing to 960x600 resolution as well as changing from full screen to borderless I was able to get a little over 4 hours of playtime.
The game plays just fine out of the box. However, a few battery tweaks let you stay off the charger for almost double the time with little to no visual performance loss. (Except in ME3, you could start to somewhat notice during cutscenes)
Runs Great With No Changes Needed
With default settings the game ran for about 2.5 hours. Lower the resolution a smidge, change from Fullscreen To Windowed, change preset graphics to Medium and enable FSR to get almost 4 hours!
Regardless, game worked great in hand and when using a dock for my TV with Xbox controller.
Runs Well Right Out of the Box
I wouldn't say it's really an "issue", more that you just have to hit the keys:
STEAM + Left Bumper
In order to zoom while using the right track pad to select the "continue" option the initial launch window. Other than that, no issues.
Had no issues other than the same ones I have on Desktop. (latency to other players)
Again, just note the zoom trick to get the mouse cursor working and then you're set!
Works Well With Some Slight Changes
I just changed some of the shortcuts to ones I use on my personal system so the control scheme carries over. (Have some things mapped differently)
Turned down to low settings (some a bit higher), 40 fps, lowered resolution and changed from fullscreen to windowed to enable FSR. (Gives a little under 3 hours from full charge)
When you start looking at legendaries that have 4 buffs or just long worded descriptions on equipment, the text shrinks. As well, in game user chat.
I changed from M/K to Controller a month ago just to try it out so I was already used to the controls to an extent. However, can say it comes with a learning curve.
The game works well enough, but it's obvious it's not optimized for the deck just yet. I'm not sure how this site deals with links, but here is the video I followed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5NHmMDX2PI If you'd rather not click links, it's called "New World Steam Deck Ultimate Setup Guide" from the Ginger Prime Gaming channel. He shows you how to set it up. But if you prefer text: Hit Steam Key -> Settings -> System -> Enable "Developer Mode" -> Go back to main settings tab -> Scroll all the way down to Developer -> Turn off "Enable Wifi Power Management"
This alone caused enormous issues for me, as I think New World is not a fan of intermittent connections. But after doing that, ran well! I didn't try going into wars, chest runs, or OPR but I don't think it'd handle that well unless you did further optimization. Also, would advise NOT logging out in a city. Normally won't let you log back in if you're in a city. (once you're in game, going to a city is fine just not when logging in initially) I ran Tempest Heart with no issues.
Game Worked With No Changes Needed
Worked great! (when it worked, though this isn't the SD's fault but the games)
Was able to connect and play with 2 friends (both of which were also on SD).
- Battery life was ~2 hours
- Set on medium preset
I played this game for about 2 hours on Windows 10, then played it on POP OS for 4 hours and notice absolutely no difference.
Works with No Changes
Dropped to medium settings, lowered resolution and enabled FSR. (Went from 1.5 hours to 3)
Game worked right out of the box, beat the entire game without ever changing anything (beyond a few just for battery life about halfway through).
Works Great, No Changes
Zero connectivity issues. Though you may want to adjust sensitivity if you're playing with deck in hands. You don't turn very quick by default.
Lasts about 2.5 hours and no hiccups from it on my end.
I switched to Proton 6.3-8 so that I could utilize the Xbox login screen. After that, switched to GE0Proton9-22 and had zero issues.
Works with Little to No Changes
Through in-game menu: Capped at 30 FPS, dropped settings to "LOW"
Short of changing some settings for battery (minus the graphics preset, I'd say go no higher than medium) the game worked flawlessly!
Perfect Out of Box
Game literally ran perfectly with how it was configured. (all settings on low) Admittedly, the start/select button being reversed from a controller on PC did throw me for a loop though.
Worked out of the Box
I didn't tinker with anything, just used the touch pads and everything worked great. Battery lasted a little over 3 hours.
Works Perfectly From Install
I just beat the game from start to finish finding random premonitions here and there just to confirm they work. Had zero issues with any playback. I played this with my Steam Deck Dock (from JSAUX) so it was basically charging the entire time. But without that, and messing with no settings, I'd get about 2.5 hours of battery time for it which imo is plenty.
Game worked amazingly, 10/10.
Seldom, but some slight "pop" sounds when you switch scenes.
I used PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command% from xoxelliemaexox's report (do note she's on desktop) and used this command through each iteration of Proton. I also used the shell script she linked to, but that didn't seem to change anything. (then again, doesn't look like it has any built in error checking, would just throw a "no work" error if it got caught) That meaning:
- Proton Experimental
- Proton 7.0-4
- Proton 6.3-8
Until I finally arrived at Proton 5.13-6 which is the (as per steam deck) report from user 己ヨ卞回 stated worked fine. (with and without the run script) I haven't seen any issues, but I've only made it to the opening boat scene. Meaning, no issues with QTE's or choice controls so far. My battery life has so far lasted roughly 2 hours and 40-ish minutes before yelling at me, with default settings.
Works Well, Only Slight Issues
Switched to 30 FPS and changed Foliage from "high" to "medium"
It didn't happen often, but I really only noticed this happening in the scenes before the title splash screen.
Even with Vsync on (tried with off and on), 30 FPS limit, and lowering everything to medium there were still some noticible points of "chugging". But again, most of this was in the scenes leading up to the title splash screen.
Game works just fine right out of the box, just head to the options menu and cap your FPS at 30 and lower everything to medium. After that, not much "chugging". The audio sync issue was odd, but I only noticed very early in the game and never heard it again.
Game works Mostly Fine Out of the Box
During cutscenes you could hear a crackling noise
I had to change the controls, but short of that it worked great. You just need to make sure that you ran the configuration first (you have to do this no matter what system you're on though). As well, on my Steam Deck I've noticed that it will have a crackling noise during cutscenes from the audio.
Game Works Well Out of the Box
Battery life is about 2 hours, and only "complaint" is that it chuggs just a bit when on the ship. (just released though, so may be an optimization thing) All in all, works perfectly as is with the defaults!
