Proton 4.11-13
Extremely loud crackle when game boots up, then no audio after that
Proton 4.11-13 is the only proton version recommended by Steam that boots Animal Well, all others either don't boot the game, or the screen freezes on first frame of main menu while the music plays. When the game boots up, it plays an ear destroyingly loud crackle, followed by no audio. Everything else works.
Looking at the other protonDB reviews, it seems this problem is specific to Linux Mint.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=virtual_heaps %command%
These launch options were required to get past a frozen game screen on initial load.

Works out of the box on Fedora
I tried running this game on Fedora Linux after failing to run it on Arch. It ran perfectly without any tinkering or messing around with launch options. I will submit a new report based on my experience with Arch once I test it further.

Highly recommended

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=virtual_heaps %command%
Anyone using vulkan-intel/lib32-vulkan-intel should use the launch options above for the game to launch and run normally. If not, you will get an initial launch with a frozen screen and music playing. You're welcome.
Game installed and launched, but freezes within the first second of running. Music continues playing but video and window are unresponsive.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
If you're getting "failed to create D3D12 Device" on an Intel GPU, install libvkd3d on your system and use launch options "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%". Otherwise I get the same issue.
Works perfectly

env OBS_VKCAPTURE=1 %command%
These tinkering steps might not be needed at all. They are used out of habit (for screen capturing in OBS).
game can be launched, but it gets stuck immediately after launched, even before the beginning menu appear

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
With the good launch options it worked perfectly without any problem of framerate

gamemoderun %command%
First time some months ago I encountered issues with framerate, dropping to ~50 fps, and since the game runs tied to fps the game played significantly slower. But either it got patched, or I messed up something to begin with, now the game runs smootly

No issues, though the first time I launched it the controls (any template) didn't work. I rebooted the deck and everything worked after.
I did follow the SDHQ config suggestions for battery life.

The game runs great. If it's crashing on launch and you have a PS4 controller, try enabling Steam Input.
Enabled Steam Input
Having my PS4 controller connected would cause the game to crash on launch, unless Steam Input was enabled.

Unplayable performance
Activating fullscreen only stretches the aspect ratio, but even after manually entering fullscreen it does not fill the screen.
Inconsistently pins a CPU core to 100% and slows down both rendering and the game loop to an unplayable pace.
Great game - works right out of the box

При первом запуске была долгая загрузка. Но дальше никаких проблем встречено не было.
Same error as Dmviper: "failed to create D3D12 Device (error = 0x80004005)"

The game can't keep up 60 fps, but most importantly can't keep a steady frame rate (10 worst case, average 30-50).
framerate is totally inconsistent, and since it is tightly tied to framerate it is unplayable
As movement and game loops are tied to frame rate and the game has very tight platforming, it is unbearable to play the game with these very unconsistent framerate.
The game runs great, however would be good to see unlocked fps mode for 90hz oled screen

Works exactly as expected out of the box (may need to update system through package manager)
Previously I wrote a report that the game was broken and wouldn't detect my controller input. I was able to get the game working shortly after and am submitting an updated report here.
At that time, I had tried multiple versions of Proton and restarted my PC, checked for Steam updates, etc. Upon upgrading my system (via pacman since I'm on Arch), the game plays with no issues. I don't know exactly which package was updated, but either way, that solved the issue. I have beaten the main story of the game and several of the side quests with no issues of any kind.
Works out of the box

Game consistently crashes before launching
Every startup attempt crashes with the error: "failed to create D3D12 Device (error = 0x80004005)"
I have tried using different versions of proton (experimental, 9.0-1, and 8.0-5) to no avail.
This error seems similar to one many Windows 10/11 users have encountered so I do not believe it is a Linux specific problem.

A truly beautiful game.
My DS4 controller, which Steam indicated was supported by the developer, simply wasn't picked up. I just used by Xbox controller, which was correctly detected and worked like a charm.
In fact, one certain easter egg involving moving the window itself while in windowed mode is preserved.
One very specific, extremely endgame secret involving physical printing appeared inoperable, but to be honest, I'm not sure the developer expected everyone playing this game to have a functioning printer in the first place.

Works perfectly for me, no tinkering required.
works great out of the box

I had a strange graohical error on my manjaro/arch PC which isnt present here

Works great out of the box with what steam recommends but the map scrolling is jittery and ugly. Nothing effecting gameplay though.
The map screen is jittery when scrolling
