Controller not being recognized; cannot go past the menu
The game will not recognize controller inputs on an 8Bit Do Pro or Xbox 360 wired controller. Proton versions tried:
- Experimental
- 9.0-1
- 8.0-5
- 7.0-6
Works exactly as expected out of the box (may need to update system through package manager)
Previously I wrote a report that the game was broken and wouldn't detect my controller input. I was able to get the game working shortly after and am submitting an updated report here.
At that time, I had tried multiple versions of Proton and restarted my PC, checked for Steam updates, etc. Upon upgrading my system (via pacman since I'm on Arch), the game plays with no issues. I don't know exactly which package was updated, but either way, that solved the issue. I have beaten the main story of the game and several of the side quests with no issues of any kind.
Works perfectly well so far minus the minor online disconnects that are irregular.
Would occassionally get disconnected while playing online with friends, but my friends who are using Windows/Mac had the same problem, so it seems to be game-related.
When you first start it, it does take a little longer than I would expect, but after that it's smooth.
Performance is maybe 10% worse than on Windows. I had to lower my graphics settings from Medium on everything to Medium on about half of the settings to get a smooth experience.
It said I had out-of-date drivers when I first loaded the game, and when I closed the game it claimed it crashed and asked me to fill out a crash report. Other than that it seemed to be working fine.
You can't use your microphone to communicate with people, which I think is a side effect of that audio going through the Xbox services, but the game audio is fine.
Game just took longer to load than I would have expected the first time I loaded it up. It loaded much quicker the second time I started it.
The only issue I hit was some confusion the first time loading the game. It wanted to "download" 20 GB of game files which were already present on the machine, but claimed I only had 3 GB of space. I went ahead and started the install anyway to see if it was a quirk with Proton. Seems that was the case, because the download finished almost immediately and removed some installation-related files before loading the main game.
