The game runs flawlessly. However, I had some minor quirky interactions involving fullscreen mode. It was largely a non-issue.
While the game was in fullscreen mode, there was no way to release the mouse from the game (use other applications.) without exiting fullscreen within the game. Overall, it did not play nice with my window manager (i3)
Using my touch screen moved the cursor in unexpected, and unusable ways. The mouse and trackpad worked completely fine though.
Near flawless performance after a shortish initial period of slowdown.
On my first play session, there was initially minor slowdown. It dissapeared after 20 minutes or so, and did not occur on later launches.
Everything works as well as it does in Windows. No technical issues at all.
It works with Steam Cloud without issue.
The game will not launch without Wine D3D enabled.
Crashes were frequent, but completing maps without experiencing them is possible with some luck.
I had an occasional crash in early missions and the tutorial, but chapter 5 of the main campaign would crash frequently. I was unable to launch the game with launch options PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 gamemoderun %command% listed by another user as useful to prevent crashing.
Basically flawless. It crashed once when I enabled v-sync, but no other issues.
The game crashed when I enabled V-sync. When I opened the game again, V-sync was enabled, and the game never crashed again.
Minor stalling issues with no significant impact
When opening item orbs, or when a cutscene is about to begin, and often when a battle is about to start, the game soft-freezes for several seconds. You lose control of the character (mostly) but after a bit, the game resumes as it should. It's awkward, but not substantially impactful to the game as a whole.
The game was functionally unplayable due to the extreme slowdown and missing character models.
Mega Man's body, as well as other bodies would not render.
The framerate was horribly slow (10fps or so) and everything felt unresponsive.
It runs fine.
Some video messages turned into large white boxes instead of the properly displayed videos. This did not occur after restarting the game. I can't say whether this was a game glitch or a Proton problem.
Possibly some performance hit due to Proton. Possibly may laptop is underpowered. Either way, the game was playable, and well worth playing.
The game was very sluggish, and I needed to turn down the settings it became playable. It may be my laptop was underpowered for the job. I did use PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%, but it did not affect things.
Doesn't work out of the box, but runs near-perfect with Proton-5.21-GE. Direct X11 and Direct X12 modes both work.
Proton-5.21-GE
In some areas, I noticed strange, black graphical obstructions. Resetting the game removed them. I can't tell if this is a proton glitch, or just a glitch with the game. The game remained reasonably playable even with the obstructions, and they did not last long.
Alt-tabbing frequently did not leave fullscreen correctly. I could workaround this by changing to windowed mode using the in-gamewindow, then alt-tabbing, which was a minor nuisance.
While using the in game graphics settings, the game stated incorrectly that I had no video memory on my graphics card, which set off some in game alerts needlessly. This may be related to the visual irregularities I experienced.
Important text is missing unless you set the launch option: PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command% -force-d3d9 Same as Ticket to Ride. Runs flawlessly once applied.
It runs nearly perfect. One boss battle causes crashes, and initially, there is some slight slowdown which clears up after a bit.
For the very beginning of the game, I experience some minor slowdown/stuttering. After playing a bit (half hour maybe?) this cleared up, and I have not noticed any slowdown since.
During the boss battle with the slime/slug in the sewer, I had the game crash on me multiple times. I then lowered the difficulty to minimum to defeat the boss quickly. I have only played slightly past this point, about 10 hours into the game.
Aside from the intro and ending cutscenes, the technical experience is flawless.
There is an opening anime cutscene, and ending credits that only play audio. My laptop showed no video, my Desktop sometimes showed graphical glitches. Checking Youtube reveals they have nothing important going on. The game runs oherwise flawlessly (and performs better than I would expect from my laptop.)
The opening and ending anime videos will only play audio.
This game has an option to import save data from the first Trails of Cold Steel. However, Proton places these files in different locations. If you would like to import a file, you will need to copy it to the new location. Using the below command in a terminal should work. cp ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/538680/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/FALCOM/ed8/ ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/748490/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/FALCOM/
Performance is functionally identical to Cold Steel 1. If you've played that, expect the same results.
Cold Steel 4 has a feature where it can read data from Cold Steel 1, 2 and 3. However, Proton places the save files for each of them in a separate location. You can fix this by copying the save files. The locations to copy the save files to is: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1198090/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Falcom/ The addresses for the other save files are the same, except for the ID number after compatdata, which are the following: Cold Steel 1: 538680 Cold Steel 2: 748490 Cold Steel 3: 991270
The game crashed once during the intro. Like Trails of Cold Steel 3, this seems to be fixed with the launch option: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% Also, when exiting the game from the main menu, it just freezes instead of exiting.
Some text is missing that would make the game difficult to play if you are not intimately familiar with the rules. However, this can be bypassed by adding the launch option PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command% -force-d3d9
The native Linux build is out of date. It functions flawlessly offline, but cannot connect online. Using Steam Play with the launch option mentioned is a completely flawless experience.
There was frequent slowdown. It could be due to my laptop's hardware, but it was laggier than I would expect for a game of this nature.
The game would occasionally crash, particularly in areas with a lot going on. It happened maybe 5-8 times throughout the game.
Some stability issues and random conrol quirks, but nothing critical. Overally, the experience is still good.
On a controller, when starting the game, the horizontal camera axis for third person view will be reversed. You can fix this in the settings, but it will sometimes revert on game reset, despite the correct setting still being ticked. Unticking, and reticking the setting fixes the issue.
The game would crash... approximately once every 4 levels in story mode after completing a mission. The mission remains completed, so there is no need to replay the level. I had one game crash when starting a map.
