Opens and closes immediately
Installs normal using wine or Proton, but can't get past the initial menu to select game version and optional mods. Hitting run opens and immediately crashes the game.

Works out of the box
I played the remastered version with all DLCs and everything worked as expected.

Manipulating the joystick deadzone slider seems to also change the response curve, which is not availble as a separate option. The controls take some fine tuning to eventually arrive at something that is half decent.
In my experience Night Dive studios have a bad record with implementing decent controller support, Quake 2 Enhanced is no exception. The controls are functional but not great. However their remastering work here is impeccable as always. Highly recommend.

Perfect OTB.
I played this mostly through vkQuake2, but should've just stuck with the 2023 remaster as it's pretty much perfect. vkQuake2 had a nasty sound bug for me.

Crashed going from borderless to fullscreen
After Quake 1 launched natively, somehow, I tried launching Quake II without Proton as well, and it also just kinda... worked? I'm not sure why. I DID notice that one time when the game crashed, there was a popup that somewhat resembled a Windows popup, so perhaps Wine magically caught the game on its own and is running it? I have no idea. Either way, it runs phenomenally for me.
Playthrough of all the missionpacks without any issues

Works well on deck once you've set the controls to your preferences. In game accessibility options improve UI readibility significantly.
TDP 5

GPU at 200hz, TDP at 5w, FPS at 76.

Quake II remaster and original both work perfectly out-of-the-box with no need for additional configuration.

The remastered version of the game appears to have a slight problem with stutter, it's nothing too off-putting but it is there in certain parts of the game.
The remastered version appears to have some severe crashing issues on Ryzen CPUs. I managed to avoid them all together by inputting "jobs_enable 0" into the game's console commands.
This updated Quake 2 report is specifically for the Quake 2 remaster, after having played through all of its campaign content I can confidently say this is a mostly great experience on Linux, but Nightdive really needs to patch the game further to iron out those crashes and stutters at the time of writing.
Works perfectly out of the box

Native Vulkan API. Massive framerate, there's no input lag nor input problems of any kind.

The new release works perfect.

runs perfect
3 hours in, zero problems. Just bought it, installed it, currently in mission 4 of the base game. Performance is great, audio is working flawless, controls are tight and precise.

Works perfectly under Wayland with no configuration
Very rare freezing that seems to happen only once per campaign
I don't see how or why copying SDL2.dll from another game (Quake II) was supposed to work

Runs out of the box
First game I tested on a fresh install of Arch. Ran very smooth. Not sure if this is a placebo, or because of the Vulkan shaders, but it looked like the graphics were better playing on Linux than on Windows 11. But take that with a grain of salt. Other than that, it runs perfect out of the box.

SDL_VIDEODRIVER=windows %command% -vulkan
5.1 audio worked flawlessly, using a tiling window manager (if a bit finicky due to the game capturing the mouse cursor) to tile the game window worked without a hitch, Steam Input worked fine... Really, it's Quake II. My prior issues were probably that of general SDL2 on Proton, I believe it was simply trying to run the Wayland backend which, in a Windows environment, does not exist. Setting the env variable immediately fixed that issue however.

Steam SDL2 with Wayland, currently, is completely borked with no way of recovering it for Proton games.
Tried replacing SDL2.dll with that of Quake (first game, rerelease)
Running on X11? Great! The game will run flawlessly. Running on Wayland? Forget about it; lost cause, not even telling SDL2 to use the X11 backend will work, not even preloading whatever SDL2 library will change anything.
Reamster runs perfectly. Multiplayer also works without a hitch. Really loving this on deck.
After the update/remaster it feels so much like a console game that it's unreal, I'm loving it and it's running like a dream.
-vulkan

Rare random crashes. Cannot verify that it's compatibility issues.

This game works absolutely wonderfully on proton.
Hosting online multiplayer game makes everyone's ping over 600.
Game is an absolute blast with friends, but every multiplayer game I have hosted using the new system has made everyone's ping over 600. I have a very fast internet connection, and so do my friends. It doesn't seem to matter what platform they connect on, PC, XBOX, or otherwise.
Hope dedicated server support is coming with the latest update!

Game runs very well, looks beautiful, etc on latest update.
Everyone that connects to my multiplayer games has over 600 ping, crossplay enabled. Doesn't seem to matter what platform they are connecting on.
Only thing worth noting, my multiplayer online game hosting seems to have players connecting at over 600 ping, and one was my friend who has a known good connection. Not sure if it's because im emulating in Linux or if it's a bug with the new game hosting system.
Works great out of the box
It was working fine. After the update, now it runs like native.
The re-release works perfect with Proton 8.0-3.

%command% +r_rhirenderfamily d3d11
crashes without launch option, but runs flawlessly otherwise.

worked perfectly out of the box, no issues and good performance

Quake II Remastered works with default Proton 8.0-3
Joined a couple of matches no problem
Did not try the original Quake II versions and only the new remastered one. I did not enable anti aliasing (as mentioned by others) and game ran full speed. Great port!

The re-release of Quake II runs flawlessy for me so far. Great game!

Everything seems to work out of the box with or without GE proton

great remaster of a classic that's had issues running on modern hardware without community support on source ports. Despite the default control scheme saying gamepad + trackpad, everything works as you'd expect if you were playing on controler, so there's no need to mess with Steam control schemes.

%COMMAND% +r_rhirenderfamily d3d11
Without the launch option, the game crashes immediately on launch.

Crashes on launch
The remastered version crashes on launch for me.

Turn on antialiasing cause crash.

need to toggle alt-enter (fullscreen shortcut) if you leave the window and return to it
