All ingame text is small, but subtitles are absolutely tiny and some of the voice acting is in Chinese.
The game (in its definitive edition, which is the sale as the base one but with all the DLC) runs well out of the box. The default settings provide a pretty stable 60fps, with occasional traversal or loading stutter. Settings can be lowered to alleviate some of them but considering their nature, it is more efficient to cap the game at 40 or 50fps if you're looking for a perfectly stable experience. Very enjoyable regardless.

Run out of the box like a charm. This game is one of the few that use martial art in GTA's overall formula and it feels great.
i believe i have the german low violence version which apparently is not up to date. will not start at all.
tried all kinds of proton versions and suggestions from other reports. i also remember having trouble with it on windows...

Like others have mentioned, try the protontrick, adjust to fullscreen from the settings, and the game will play just fine.

After running the above, the whitescreen problem is indeed gone. Change the resolution in the in-game settings to match your monitor.

Just run this in the wine prefix for sleeping dogs vd=1280x720
Enabling just proton experimental is not enough. You also need the steam beta client. The winetricks command solves the white screen when starting up the game. Don't worry, the game can still be set to full screen native resolution in the game settings. (This was the non-definitive version)
It works with latest proton experimental and steam client beta.

Once this experimental proton version gets to stable it should be as simple as hitting play in steam
During the tutorial, a friendly NPC quits running when they should keep running, but ignoring them and continuing to run forward progresses the mission, as far as I've experienced this behavior doesn't reoccur in other chase missions

Doesn't work, I've tried Proton 5.13-1, Proton 5.11-GE-3-MF, Proton 5.0-9, Proton 4.11-9, Proton 4.2-9, Proton 3.16-9. I tried if the virtual desktop in winecfg makes a difference, but it didn't help. Not sure if there is a special crack needed.
Can play using Lutris
Got it working in fullscreen using Lutris' Steam Wine. These are the settings I have configured:
Lutris Config Window:
- Wine Version: ge-protonifield-4.10-x86_64
- Enable DXVK
- Enable VKD3D
- Enable Esync
- Windowed Virtual Desktop (1920x1080)

Wine Config Window: Windows Version: Windows 7, Emulate a virtual desktop (1920x1080)
**You may also have to change the polling rate for your mouse. This was an issue for me as it would cause the fps to drop significantly anytime I moved the mouse. You will have to check the documentation for your distro.

UnknownUnknown(2+ hours with Proton)it works flawlessly in windowed mode. But since you can't change it in-game, you have to go to the game folder, then the data folder, then you need to edit the file named DisplaySettings.xml with a text editor.
Then look for "1" and change that "1" to "0" and it should start in windowed mode.
Lastly, setting AA to "Extreme" may kill your fps, so set it to high if you encounter fps problems.
