Works better than running on Windows ironically
With Steam dropping Windows 7 support, this will be the most viable solution on playing these classic games.
Works better than running on Windows
Does not need any popcap patches/fixes. I was able to set resolution to Ultra. Tried all game modes, no errors so far
Works better than of Windows.
on Windows currently you wiill need to use the popcap-patches from GitHub. But for Linux it works out of the box and you can even set the graphics settings and resolution to Ultra.
Works out of the box
Did a handful of runs. Didn't do anything to make it run. Just enabled Steam Play then installed this game, and then run it.
Runs just fines.
This game runs just fine, although if you skipped the compiling shaders part, it would lag at some point. But it was short anyway so i just let it compile. The game works without any configuration done. Works out of the box
Turn off other monitor if you are using more than one
This happens only when you have Multiple Monitors. Turn off your other monitor when this happens.
Connecting to WoT is not an issue, logged in and got an online job succesfully
The game running natively is fine.
it's the same as when it's running natively
both Native and with Proton works fine. They got their pros and cons
Works better than when running on current version of Windows
Finished this game in one sitting here on Linux. No weird frame rate issues. Played on Full Screen
Works flawlessly (I didnt get a high score though XD)
Will default to low res because it's an old game, but in settings you can change it to 1080p and it works fine. No dropped frames whatsoever
Runs Perfectly
It plays as if it was running on Windows
Using both Xbox 360 and DS4 Controllers and it worked fine without any problems
Install and play, no tinkering needed. It runs as if it was installed on Windows, even better it is more stable.
Works flawlessly out of the box
Managed to reach a somehow later stage with it. My game is not FPS capped whatsoever, as well as 3D Acceleration was enabled by default
Works out of the box.
Perfectly working out of the box
It works out of the box without any kind of tinkering or configuration. Multiplayer and remote play session works flawlessly
The only issue would be the slightly bugged out EA Login form. Other than that, the over all gameplay is fine
Stuttering on busy areas
You will need to disconnect and reconnect the controller when it's not detected
Tried the following controllers:
- Xbox 360
- PlayStation DS4
- Nintendo Switch Pro
Lower the graphcis settings if it's not performing as expected
Upon opening of EA App with the login form, the first window/dialogue may appear black window only, but the button is present there. If you have used Steam invoked EA App on Windows you will know where the "ok" button is located, around the bottom right corner.
Once you get to sign in and started playing Online, everything is flawless
For now the workaround about the EA App not launching is using Proton Experimental
Works out of the box
Works as if it is running on Windows.
Installed and worked without any tinkering except for turning on the SteamPlay on Steam Settings.
What I tried:
- Winning 5 Races on Xbox Knockoff Controller
- Autolog works out of the box. So my cloud save is synced
It runs as if it was running on Windows
Do note that this game is locked to 60FPS because of GameMakerStudio. X11 and Wayland won't have problems playing this game, no artifacts, no screen tearing, perfectly running fine.
25 FPS may be the frame rate of this game back in the days we were playing it on CRT Monitors anyway.
Changed the PlantsVsZombies.exe using the mentioned workaround above. However to simplify the process, I just uploaded the file to a forked GitHub repo of popcap-fixes
Steps on making it work
- Download the said file above
- Do not launch the game
- Rename the PlantsVsZombies.exe from the installation directory to something like PlantsVsZombies.exe.bak
- Place the downloaded file to the game directory
- Launch the game
If you are sketchy about the exe file, you can follow the no-drm fix from above. Or i recommend doing it with Windows instead so you will save yourself a hassle of doing to a lof ot sub directories
- Multi Monitor issue, doing windowed mode then dragging it to a different monitor may crash the game
- Resolution issue, the game may not launch on something like 1440x900 type of display
Even with any hardware I'm locked at 25 FPS.
Without the DRM fix, there would be a lot of performance issues including the Card Picking part, it may even crash from there.
With that said, if you don't like being locked at 25 FPS then just install it on Windows or in a virtual machine that's running Windows.
Works as it works with Windows. No tinkering done.
Was able to host multiplayer and so far all of my Gameplay was done here in my Setup with my Laptop also using Linux and a friend from Japan.
Some alt-tabbing does not capture the mouse properly, but you can fix it by alt-tabbing again. Apart from that there's no problems at all. Played all of my hours on Linux so far. No problems encountered yet.
The game runs as is and is perfectly running on Steam Deck as if it was made for it. The text isn't small either since the game is a direct recreation of the original Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town which has big texts as well given the GBA's Screen and now was adapted to this game. None of the controller glyphs were "incorrect" at all apart from the start and select button. The rest is synonymous to what the Xbox is anyway.
This game runs fine out of the box
Screen Tearing when you have multiple monitors
If you have only single monitor then this game just works out of the box, both for controllers or mouse and keyboard. However when you have multiple monitors, you might have to do some hacky things to prevent that from happening. This was a common problem for me on Euro Truck Sim as well, but turning off the other monitor just fixes it so I don't really count it as a "bug".
No tinkering needed
Lower the graphics settings if it stutters. It is a common problem to Windows playing this game too.
Slight performance degradation vs Windows.
Changed my settings to Medium to make it bearable
It works as if it is running on Windows.
Switch to Medium to mitigate the issue if High is too much. Overall the game works out of the box using Steam's Default.
Switch to Wayland if you are on Ubuntu to fix screen tearing
Slight frame drops on busy areas
I just switched to different version of Proton to see difference in performance, but over all it's all the same. The tinker step is completely optional and isn't required.
Works out of the box.
Just enabled Steam Play, installed this game, then started playing, Nothing was done to make it run. It just works.
Works better than running on Windows
3D Acceleration is enabled by default. Able to play on high frame rates too.
Works better than running on Current Version of Windows
It defaulted to 100 FPS, Ultra Settings, and with 3D Acceleration On. I recommend playing these games on Linux than forcing it to Windows.
The alt tabbing was a game breaker. Would be common for someone who occasionally use Discord or Facebook while playing this game
Alt tabbing destroys the whole game even with multiple monitor setup, you will need a restart.
Switch to Experimental and go Medium Settings
Alt Tabbing Destroys the playability of the game
Just hope for the best in the future update of proton.
