Game doesn't start
No idea how everyone says this runs perfectly. I've tried every proton in the list as well as GE and the game just doesn't start.
Works out of the box
Screen resolution must be changed on first boot.
Used desktop mode
Needed to launch in desktop mode to change resolution
Changed game resolution to 1280 x 800 for resolution support over 640 x 480.
Game Resolution setting
Runs really well, and launches into game within about 10 seconds. If you mash that A button you'll be ingame exceedingly fast.
Limit TDP to 8W, can probably go lower. Allow Tearing as game forces Vsync. Set GPU to 400Mhz. Running the game @ 70hz locked with the reddit tweak that overclocks your screen.
No Cloud Saves, but you should know how good you are at the game. Not much is lost on a reinstall.
Works flawlessly (I didnt get a high score though XD)
Will default to low res because it's an old game, but in settings you can change it to 1080p and it works fine. No dropped frames whatsoever
Appears to work just fine when enabling Proton 8.0-2
Local high score table is reset when the game is uninstalled. No Steam Cloud or Leaderboard support. Since score-chasing is the main point of the game, I think the lack of either feature is a significant problem.
Flawless experience with no tinkering
cTDP and GPU clock speed can be set to minimum values and still maintain 60fps
Works for the most part, as long as you are committed to your session, or it'll hang.
Tabbing out and in again makes the game stop rendering, I can still hear it but the display freezes.
Works out of the box with Proton 6.3-7
Previously, this game had issues when configuring the video settings. These have since been resolved and the game runs out of the box with no tweaks. Some notes:
- Tested with a Steam Controller
- Tested with a Keyboard/Mouse
- Tested with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Tested under KDE Plasma with both X11 and Wayland sessions
- Additionally, there were no input or controller issues when running under Wayland
- Tested with with Steam Link Android app and did not have any issues using a Steam Controller or touch controls with this game
Overall this game is a pleasure to play on Linux and will be a great one for the Steam Deck!
Runs perfect OOTB with 6.3-5
Crash upon changing resolution in fullscreen
Problems detecting key presses while other keys held
Borked, does not run
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'dxvk::DxvkError'
Works out of the box.
Works with keyboard/mouse and controller perfectly
The game works great! I haven't had any crashes, the fullscreen issue is a little annoying though but once you fix it the first time you won't need to mess with it again.
- The fullscreen issue is also present on Windows. Go out of fullscreen before you change any graphics settings, and apply fullscreen last. It's an old game ported from Xbox Live Arcade by a studio that has since been dissolved, what can you do?
- Tested with Remote Play Anywhere streaming to my phone and with my Steam Controller, I didn't have any problems at all
Game launches then stops without showing any screen (only trace of activity is seen in task manager)
It's perfectly playable when using keyboard controls.
Any mouse input while in fullscreen mode will freeze the game. Going into windowed mode and back into fullscreen mode (Alt+Enter) will unfreeze the game. This makes mouse controls unusable.
Other than the fullscreen issue, game worked fantastically, and is like $2.50 for a great time.
Fullscreen resolution could not be changed until windowed was applied first. Would crash otherwise.
Runs perfectly on a variety of hardware and Proton versions
Tested on Manjaro and standard Arch across a bunch of different types of hardware and Proton versions. I've had no Proton-specific issues running this game. It has some bugs with setting certain display preferences but this happens on Windows too. Overall, the game works perfect. Tested with and without Valve ACO, a bunch of different Mesa versions, and tested with my Steam Controller and a keyboard/mouse. No problems whatsoever.
Works flawless through Proton, any issues present are also present on Windows
You may experience issues with certain menu settings, and they may be fiddly to get working. See previous reports on how to get around this, but it isn't an issue with Proton. It's just an issue with the game.
Works perfect
The bugs present in Windows when trying to fullscreen the game and set options such as anti-aliasing, are also present with Proton. It will work but it can take a while. This is not a Proton-specific issue however.
Flawless. Works great, even on integrated graphics like my laptop.
Game has issues trying to fullscreen after changing certain values such as anti-aliasing. This issue is present on Windows too, it is not a Proton-specific issue however it is worth noting that you may have issues.
After extensively testing for several hours, the game works flawlessly under Proton.
Had to set the game to windowed, then set all the settings (including fullscreen) while the game was in windowed mode. This workaround is required on WIndows 10 as well and is not a Proton specific issue, hence the Platinum rating. Even on my specs with an iGPU it ran at full 60fps with no frame dips.
Perfect performance. Any graphical issues that need working around are also present on Windows and are not related to WINE. And as mentioned, they can be easily worked around.
Works perfectly.
Worked perfectly. Was able to change to windowed screen, and change size of the game without issue. Audio and input was functional. Platinum.
Works perfectly. Requires the same workarounds as Windows 10 to get it to run at 16:9 stretched and fullscreen (run in windowed mode, change settings, run in fullscreen usually works. You might have to try a few times. Again, this is present on Windows 10 too)
The only thing that does not work is changing the resolution (the game crashes). You can overcome the issue by setting the game to window mode, changing the res there and changing back to fullscreen. The performance is actually relly good even on my really old laptop.
Make all graphic settings in windowed mode. Then: Save, exit, restart, activate full screen.
Have to change resolution within game files, if you try within the game it will crash. otherwise runs perfectly
As has been stated by others, runs great except for changing resolution while in fullscreen mode.
Just switch to windowed in the settings, set the resolution and change it back to fullscreen and you're good to go. Everything else works flawlessly and at fantastic framerates.
It crashes if you attempt to change the resolution while in fullscreen, but doesn't crash if windowed. So, start it, L-Alt+Enter to switch to a window, change to your preferred resolution, then quit and restart. Should run fine afterward

Starts in 640x480, crashes on resolution change but resolution can be set via config file: ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/8400/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/Bizarre Creations/Geometry Wars Retro Evolved/config.xml
Smooth as silk
Game defaults to 640x480 on fullscreen, crashes if resolution is changed. Windowed mode doesn't have any issues when resized.
