I was getting the sound stutter / crackling issue. Restarting steam did not help in my case. I ended up using winetricks "xact" and everything was happy after that. I played about 2.5 hours of multiplayer with a friend and everything was happy.
For those that may not know how to install xact you'll need to install winetricks on your system first. After that...
...:$ WINEPREFIX=/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/204360/pfx winetricks xact
Game sometimes launches and can play for 5 to 10 minutes then chashes.
Deleting prefix allows another 5 to 10 minutes of play (both SP and MP) but crashes. Once the game crashes I cannot get back to the main menu. Game used to work befor the early July patch but now crashing constantly. I have tried Proton 9, GE9, and experimental. Not sure what gives. If I find something that works I'll update this report or make another >.<
Sometimes I need to go into sound settings and switch to a different audio device then switch back to get sound to work. Pretty minor to me. Also, it's not consistent as to when this happens.
Disregard my review below as I discovered I had a faulty stick of RAM when I made that report. With the updated RAM the only thing I needed to do in order to run the game without crashes was to opt into the available beta named "advanced - Advanced options". When launching the game selec the "Play (Custom)" option. Aside from the occassional (maybe 1 in 5 launches) time when I have to go into settings and swap the audio device away and back to get sound working the game plays perfectly now.
Sometimes the wrong output gets used in the game so I have to switch output devices in game to something else then back for the correct output to be used.
Ocassional crash when using default setup. Using the beta "advanced - Advanced Options" then clicking "Play (Custom)" got rid of the crashes for me.
Disregard my review below as I had some bad sticks of RAM. After much testing and new RAM I now have a configuration that should be stable for just about anyone using a debian base.
I'm at a mixed opinion of "a typical gamer have an enjoyable experience" given the lighting thing.
HDR lighting made it hard to see. Sun washes everything out. Shadow-y areas are basically black other than track turning markers. It makes it very difficult to see the track and will affect your times.
See lighting issues mentioned earlier. I got my gamma adjusted down but the pitch black areas can make it difficult to race properly.
Ran fine. Played about three missions multiplayer on "ultra" settings. No stutter or anything that I could tell. I dropped into a existing multiplayer session and played a couple from the beginning. The only issue I saw was a small "hiccup" in the countdown timer after a match but that could of easily been my internet hiccuping.
I played for about 4 hours last night. Hosting some private games with another proton user was fine. Added a third user and things got super laggy. Ended up having the windows user of the group host and everything was smooth after. Only issue I've noticed aside from the lag is that the mouse is not visible when in the steam overlay (shift-tab) which can be difficult if you're trying to invite players or join someone else via invite. I ended up exiting DRG and just joining my windows friend from the steam friends list. Other than that everything ran super smooth!
I played the first three missions and everything seemed to work just fine. I plan on playing some more over the next few days and will update this post/create a new post if I encounter any issues. No tweaks required. Worked out of the box.
UPlay launcher hangs looking for patches / updates
UPlay launcher hangs looking for patches / updates. I'm wondering if this is related to Ubisoft updating to "Ubisoft Connect" or whatever the name of the new tool is.
Easy Anti-Cheat now works in Proton on this title. I connected to the official servers and played about 4 rounds, 30 minutes each-ish. No issues. Just worked.
EAC will still boot you from official servers. Playing on a private server with EAC disabled works just fine.
I think a typical gamer would be fine playing this title assuming they can remap the key prompts from PS style prompts to xbox style prompts
Game shows the playstation controls rather than the steam deck xbox-like controls.
We were able to figure out what needs to be done pretty easily w/o the intro videos. We assume we only missed some lore.
Mission intro/outtro videos would play for about a second or two then would end as if skipped.
I'm not sure that Proton GE is required. Given that other reports have difficulty I just put the latest version of GE.
6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Glorious Eggroll Proton (6.16-GE-1)
I installed GE with the tool "protonup". I recommend this to anyone who has never installed a custom proton before. Just "protonup" from your terminal, follow the prompts (if any), then restart steam. After that you should be able to right click your game in steam, select properties, then under the compatibility tab check the force specific version checkbox and select the proton with "GE" in the name.
Game launches then immediately exits.
I have run the game with "PROTON_DUMP_DEBUG_COMMANDS=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%" launch options. I don't really have any experience debugging proton or C libs so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the game doesn't launch. My plan is to keep the game for about a week and see if I can get it to launch before returning it.
Game works until save file exists
First play of story or free play is fine. Once a save exists though game immediately crashes upon loading either of these options. It doesn't appear to be tied to loading a save though, just if the save even exists.
I have an open issue on Protons GitHub. If I get a work around that works consistently I'll update my review here. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3768
Game launches fine but once you get into the playable section there are huge areas of pure black. As others have mentioned this is probably some form of lighting bug. Since the game is about navigating a 3D space and solving puzzles this makes it basically unplayable to me.
Controller didn't work for menus initially until after I got into game. Then worked fine. XB360 wired controller.
As title mentions. Initially played the game a bit single player and was 100% fine. When I tried to play with a friend via online co-op the game crashed and had connectivity issues. We both switched over to GE-Proton9-7 and the game was stable after that. I think we had about 3 hours of straight MP and never had an issue.
Game seems to work perfectly for SP. I'm not a big MP person and generally only MP with friends so I cannot speak to the MP experience.
Game seems to run just fine. The sound is good; Menus are responsive, etc. I don't have anyone to test MP with just yet and I'm personally not a big fan of random MP matches. The tutorial section "windows" still appear blank so it may be best to find a tutorial video or just poke around until you're comfortable. Played two matches with bots and the game worked just fine. Haven't had time to play around with different tweaks.
Game freezes after getting to main menu
I've tried proton, proton experimental, various version of GE and cannot get the game to not freeze upon attempting to start a game. If I find something that works I'll update my review.
No issues. Have played about 20 hours since getting my deck. Game just works and no issues loading previous saves.
Right click the game in your Library list and select "Run without launcher." Past that everything works fine. Been playing Co-Op with two others and have been hosting off my machine. No crashes although sometimes opening the steam overlay and closing it can cause the game to freeze for 1~3 seconds. Occasionally when using KB&M mouse look appears to get "jittery" but XB controller works just fine. This isn't a hardware problem as the same keyboard / mouse work just fine on other games.
