Use Proton 8 or GE and everything works as intended.
Multiplayer was rocky during the day but that was traced back to their backend and not a compatibility issue. I was able to play solo without issue and MP with limited issues as they worked the kinks out of their infrastructure.
Runs pretty much OOB with Proton. Do not use native version.
I have tried the native and the proton supported version.
Do -not- use the native version if you want online multiplayer to function.
This game shares a common issue with another AoW title (Planetfall) in that sometimes clicking to host a lobby or rejoin a saved online game will not work initially. Retrying a few times seems to get the point across, but it can be unexpected and annoying at times.
100% playable OOB on native (without online multiplayer) and 100% playable OOB on proton (with online multiplayer). Just bear in mind the above caveat.
Single player will work, but multiplayer will require a windows based host.
Multiplayer saves cannot be rejoined unless other people are already loaded in
Compared to native Windows, there is a long delay in initial loading and some minor performance loss noticed during gameplay
Launcher will not update (not a big issue) and Multiplayer functionality is janky. You cannot host but can join a friend on a windows host if you continually try to keep connecting/loading until it takes. When starting a multiplayer game from a windows host, have the host invite the linux user through steam's invite as opposed to trying to join the ingame lobby.
With latest proton, extremely playable with caveats
Initial loading times will be worse than windows but not unreasonable
This is an update to my previous posting.
Launcher will not update (not a huge issue).
Mods are working (tried with mods that do not affect base game files... colonial marines for example).
You will notice slightly longer load times on initial start from launcher and a little while generating random maps.
Multiplayer is now functioning properly and the only issues encountered were ones related to the native experience. The caveat is that it may take a retry or two for hosting/joining games. I thought I had fudged up my port forwarding and alt-tabbed to check. They were fine. When I tabbed back in.. 2 re-click retries later and all was well.
With no winetricks or protontricks, this is very playable OOB if you keep in mind the caveats mentioned.
With the latest experimental Proton build. Some tweaks required but otherwise 100% playable.
Initial load times will be affected
The latest experimental Proton build borked the paradox launcher from working. The work around is:
- Navigate to /.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Age of Wonders Planetfall/ (or wherever your steam install is located)
- Make a backup or rename the paradox launcher (dowser.exe)
- Make a copy of AowPF.exe and rename the copy to dowser.exe After making the above changes, you can simply launch from steam as usual and bypass the Paradox Launcher.
There is still the multiplayer issue where when hosting, joining, or loading a save... you will have to hit the button a few times to actually get to the next menu. A slight inconvenience but not the end of the world.
All features are working including steam workshop content/mods. Tested with Colonial Marines and The Revenant faction mods.
SPECIAL NOTE There is a chance (not needed in my case) you will need to download d3dcompiler_47.dll and manually put this file into the Planetfall directory or use the protontrick equivalent of this.
No issues out of the box. Played a few rounds of multi with others
Native, native on steam, and Proton on steam all work flawlessly.
I've tried all the builds I could think of and none of them have had any issues.
Works out of the box.
Very very (almost unnoticeable) performance difference compared to native windows. Most users may not notice.
Outside some videos not playing. This works 100% OOB with little to no issue.
Opening cinematic did not play. Can be safely skipped by clicking through.
There is a very slight performance hit vs native windows, but it is so small you'd need an fps counter or benchmark software to note it. Nothing but smooth sailing.
On a related side note, I did start with "Beautiful" settings and further tweak video options to turn off shadows and something else I changed to a lower setting.
I did not try with everything cranked up to max.
Works great OOB with no tweaks. Tried various settings without issue. 2 small caveats to note.
If you use the super key ("windows" key) or alt-tab out of the game window, you cannot click on the taskbar to bring the game back up. You -can- ALT-TAB back into the game without issue. Mildly annoying, but not overly damaging to the experience.
Infrequent micro stutters during multiplayer. Nothing major or unplayable
Other than the very infrequent micro stutters and the minimize/maximize issue (ALT-TAB works), the game works flawlessly.
Multiplayer works fine as well. It does seem to use alot more upload traffic than I'm used to seeing, but works fine. Slower internet upload speeds may impair multiplayer enjoyment.
Special Notes Could not locate any port forwarding information
Native and Proton versions work. Performance is improved on Proton version.
Proton version will run smoother than native. This is an update for new proton version.
Works out of the box. Only 1 crash in >10 hours and that was likely the game based on personal investigation.
Game runs beautifully. The random CTD will cause some grief but it is infrequent enough.
I can't pin down the exact cause, but there are some regular crashes at different intervals. Usually experienced more in multiplayer than single player but the problem does persist in SP. The game will CTD without warning mid run. The logs have proven unhelpful in tracking down the problem and I am unable to manually replicate the issue.
Seemingly random CTDs after hours of ingame play.
While 90% of the time, runs are flawless. The 10% of the time it does crash (feels like it only happens when you're getting all the good drops ofc) will leave a very sour taste in your mouth.
I can recommend it in its current state but do go in with the knowledge there will be a crash that will wipe out whatever run you were on and the associated progress.
Will update if I can pin down the cause and possible workaround.
There is a known memory leak that affects Windows and Linux, but the game is entirely playable.
There is a memory leak that will cause CTD to occur. It is infrequent (usually >1+ hour of gameplay) and you can complete a run in this time.
I have found success and annoyance in working around the memory leak that plagues the game.
I will usually play a full run and then exit the game. Then restart the game for another run. This helps mitigate the crashing from the memory leak.
This problem exists in both windows and linux. I have tried the base game and the beta version with the same results.
It should be noted, that not everyone is affected by this issue. No clear determinate factors exist and the devs have said that until GMS updates their engine, there is little they can/will do to solve the issue.
I still give it my recommendation but I do so openly saying that restarting between runs will likely grate on you.
Native version does not launch. Use Proton version and dx11
Multiplayer works flawlessly. I was able to host a game for multiple people playing from Epic and Steam on windows machines. Zero issues.
Use 7.03 stable instead of Experimental for now until new updates are rolled out.
With the recent patch, there is a known memory leak that occurs from time to time.
The 0.1 Simultaneous Turns update introduced some new issues such as crashes and memory leaks. This is not native to Linux or the Proton experience and should be patched later.
I was unable to get things to run with Proton Experimental, so I "downgraded" to the 7.03 stable branch and all is as well as can be.
Recent patch introduced some issues that should be patched later.
Runs just as well as the Windows version from my personal testing.
Works flawlessly OOB with no additional config needed.
I was able to do a full playthrough with no issues. Alt-Tabbing from fullscreen produced no issues and audio was not an issue. I remember these being issues of the past but have since been fixed.
Lower graphic settings and disable all the fancy stuff ingame. Runs butter smooth afterwards.
In the launcher, revert from "Fantastic" to "Fast" graphics settings for a smooth experience. Otherwise, you will have very severe slowdown and lag. I also disabled Super Sampling, Vsync, and Anti-Aliasing in the ingame settings menu. After this was done.. the game will run smoothly with no issues.
I did not "thoroughly" test everything, but based on my initial tests, I do not anticipate any issues with Multi.
Works OOB on native and Proton. Proton did introduce some delays in Alt-Tabbing between workspaces but not enough to be a deal breaker.
Alt-Tab would take a long time to switch windows back to the game from a different workspace.
Haven't tried the native version. Playing through Proton has been flawless.
Did not launch with latest Experimental Proton. Launches and runs fine with v7.03.
