There were a couple times when I randomly crashed, but it was very smooth and stable overall.
Renamed AMD_IDENT.USM
, CA_IDENT.USM
, and FOX_IDENT.USM
under Steam/steamapps/common/Alien Isolation/DATA/UI/MOVIES/
to skip the intro videos.
This game can be kinda buggy in general but it runs great otherwise.
gamemoderun %command% -oldgameui
sometimes some weapon models were invisible for an entire play session and would randomly appear the next time I played with others missing instead. no significant effect on gameplay, but a little annoying
the Xen chapters tend to have some lag, but that's common for this game on Windows too
overall I had a smoother, better experience with Proton than the native build
The cursor has some strange red vein-like lines, but it doesn't affect anything.
There is an issue when tabbing out during the start screen. When I tab out before I get into the main menu, the game stops recognizing my inputs, but if I click "Start" to get to the main menu and then tab out, the inputs have no issues.
There is input delay, but it's very minor.
Towers that follow the mouse (helicopter and gatling gun) have horrible tracking in multiplayer, but this is a problem in Windows too.
I only crashed once before I decided to switch to Proton
works well out of the box
the framerate was sometimes inconsistent, but it was never too low
-skip-dos
After the ending cutscene finished for each episode, the game would crash. Very minor issue though.
gamescope -e -w 2560 -h 1440 -r 165 --force-grab-cursor -- gamemoderun %command%
I crashed once in 25 hours of playtime.
works well OOTB
My framerate was pretty much always in the triple digits, but sometimes it went as low as 50 during the encounters with a lot of mobs. That could be a general optimization issue that's not specific to the Linux build. Other than that, the game ran great
In the Apprehension chapter, there's a crash that happens if you have a squad when you jump to a specific rooftop. This happens on Windows too, but it's something to keep in mind because I thought it was specific to Linux before I looked it up
FPS was always bad on the first time playing a map, but it got better within a few minutes and was completely playable (60-90+ frames, no stuttering)
I crashed ~3 times during the Strider fight in "Follow Freeman!". There were also a couple other seemingly random crashes in other sections.
runs great OOTB
I unexpectedly crashed a couple times during "Follow Freeman!", but it was stable otherwise
In the native version, my controller input was wrong. It was permanently stuck in shooting mode, so I couldn't move. This hasn't been an issue while running through Proton though.
Don't switch between native and Proton if you want to keep your progress. Switching to one doesn't overwrite/delete save files from the other, but you'll have a different set of save files for each version since cloud saves aren't supported.
I found this tool to be really useful when I moved from native to Proton. If you use this tool, keep in mind that your Proton save file will be called HyperLight_RecordOfTheDrifter_X.sav
(X
will be between 0 and 3 depending on the save slot you choose) in the directory steamapps/compatdata/257850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/HyperLightDrifter/
.
The incorrect input mappings for my controller might've been an issue exclusive to me, so I would've been perfectly happy using it if not for that. Just make sure to stick to one version (Proton or native) when you play though unless you want to go through the hassle of transferring save files between the two.

The native build of the demo crashed at the start, but it works great under Proton
gamescope -e -W 2560 -H 1440 -- %command%
at the beginning after you enter the sewers, the audio cuts out until you adjust it from the pause menu
The framerate occasionally drops below 60, but this is rare and still playable.
I've only had one time where the game crashed a couple time back-to-back. It hasn't happened since.

this game can be pretty buggy in general (nothing to do with OS), but otherwise it runs great on Linux
works great OOTB
considering the submissions from a few months ago saying this game is broken, there must've been an update that fixed the Linux build of this game. I only got this game recently, and I had no issues whatsoever
Very slight lag within the first 1-2 hours of launch, but that quickly went away and it started playing flawlessly

sometimes (not often) struggled to hit 60 FPS despite my hardware
unstable experience
I only crashed a couple times until I got to the second base, where I crashed every time I tried to use the scanner.
The window goes invisible if I ever tab out of the game.
